Opera Calls Out Microsoft for 'Anticompetitive' Tactics With Edge

Yahoo01-08-2025
Opera claims Microsoft is using 'anticompetitive practices' to force Windows users to stick with the Edge browser.
'Microsoft's tactics are unjustified, frustrating to users, and only getting more severe,' Norway-based Opera alleged on Tuesday.
The company filed a petition with Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), though it claims the problem affects users globally. At issue is Microsoft's long-standing practice of preinstalling Edge and making it the default browser on Windows devices.
"In addition, the complaint challenges Microsoft's multiple manipulative design tactics or 'dark patterns' that steer Windows PC users away from alternative browsers and towards Edge, and make it difficult for users to change defaults,' Opera says.
Windows can show "obtrusive banners and messages discouraging users from downloading alternate browsers' when they start searching for them on Edge, Opera says. Windows also opens PDFs and other documents with Edge rather than third-party browsers.
'Opera's concerns are shared by many other alternative browsers,' the company said without elaborating. By filing the formal complaint, Opera is hoping CADE will investigate Microsoft and impose remedies with the goal of creating a level playing field for browser providers.
Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. But in the European Union, the company has complied with recent fair competition regulations, allowing local users to uninstall Edge from Windows. Over a decade ago, Microsoft in the EU even had to display a 'web browser choice screen,' allowing Windows users to pick from a variety of browsers.
It was unclear whether Opera plans to take similar action in the US. But the company has been urging EU courts to designate Edge "as a gatekeeper service," which would require the browser to be regulated under tighter rules.
In the meantime, Edge currently has a 13% share of the desktop market, while Google's Chrome remains the dominant platform with a near 67% share, according to Statcounter. Opera only holds a 2.6% share.

Massachusetts sheriff arrested on charges of pressuring cannabis company to over stock purchase

BOSTON (AP) — A sheriff in one of Massachusetts' largest counties was charged Friday with allegedly pressuring a Boston-based cannabis firm to sell him stock in the company. Sheriff Steven Tompkins, 67, who oversees about 1,000 employees in the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, is facing two counts of extortion. He was taken into custody in Florida and had his first appearance there. He will appear in Boston federal court later. 'Elected officials, particularly those in law enforcement, are expected to be ethical, honest and law abiding — not self-serving,' U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in a statement. "His alleged actions are an affront to the voters and taxpayers who elected him to his position, and the many dedicated and honest public servants at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. The people of Suffolk County deserve better.' No one from the sheriff's department could be reached for comment and an attorney for Tompkins did not respond to a request for comment. According to the court documents, Tompkins first pressured the unnamed company for stock as it was considering launching an initial public offering in 2020. The company, according to the documents, feared Tomkins could undermine the company's partnership with a sheriff department program that referred released inmates to work there. It feared that could put the company's operating license risk as well as the timing of its initial public offering. In November, 2020, Tompkins allegedly wired $50,000 from his retirement account to an account controlled by the company to purchase the stock. After the initial public offering, the stock value increased significantly. But when it began to fall a year later, Tompkins alleged demanded his money back and, despite, the decline in the stock's value, the company gave him a full refund. Among the evidence in the court document was five checks written to Tompkins, with a note they were for a loan repayment. Tompkins has run afoul of the law before. In 2023, Tompkins paid a fine of $12,300 for violating conflict of interest laws after he created a position in his department for his niece and for asking his subordinates to run personal errands for him. If found guilty on the extortion charges, Tompkins could face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison on each count, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.

Super Witch ice cream to open permanent soft-serve location

Since Briggs Barrios started selling his Super Witch ice cream with limited-edition weekly releases, there hasn't been a single drop in two years that hasn't sold out. Why it matters: With the addition of soft serve to his growing repertoire of frozen treats, Barrios is about to make Super Witch more accessible to New Orleans ' dessert lovers. The latest: Barrios is expanding his Harahan-based business with a permanent location inside Il Supremo in Metairie to open early this fall. Super Witch is carving out a soft-serve shop within the pizza joint with a dedicated seating area and exclusive flavors. Plus, the location will have a grab-and-go freezer for ice cream lovers to get their hands on pints more readily than Barrios' twice- or thrice-weekly pickups at the Harahan storefront. The big picture: Over the past few years, New Orleans has quietly and deliciously expanded its embarrassment of ice cream riches. Barrios is among them. He spent about three years chronicling his own fascination with ice cream on social media, sampling, he estimates, more than 1,000 pints. Eventually, he slowed down a workout routine that made that kind of ice cream consumption possible, and he quit eating it cold turkey, he says. Yes, but: His aha moment came during a pandemic-era vacation to Destin. At the Pink Coyote Dessert Co., Barrios grabbed a scoop with his brother and nephews and realized how much he'd missed it. He ordered a handful of books about how to make ice cream and has been elbows-deep in cream ever since. Dig in: What makes Super Witch so exceptional, Barrios says, is how fresh it is — the pints are packed by hand weekly — and a focus on making sure mix-ins are layered throughout. "We're about the experience," he says, and every bite should deliver what's promised on the description. Plus, he's obsessed with perfecting the recipe. "The product is the best it's ever been, but also the worst it ever will be," he says. Follow the money: The result, Barrios admits, is a premium ice cream with a price that shows it. At $14 each, "the product is expensive versus a grocery store pint," he says. "But the price of a Pizza Delicious pizza is different from Domino's for a reason. Zoom in: Barrios is as meticulous about the soft serve. When Super Witch opens a dedicated shop for it this fall, he'll likely offer two flavors at first with plans to expand that to four. It'll have toppings, too, plus a rotating sundae option and full dips of Valrhona chocolate. "It's going to change your perspective on ice cream dip cones," he promises. What's next: Barrios plans to keep his Harahan shop dedicated to pint pick-ups for weekly drops. "A lot of people love to experience ice cream in their home and can't get the same quality you get at a scoop shop in their freezer," he says. "People enjoying the things we make is the basis of what we're doing."
