Crypto startups raise $2.6bn in July: Here are the winners

Yahoo2 days ago
Crypto startups are rolling in it.
In July, 65 crypto projects raised over $2.6 billion in new investments to grow their businesses, according to DefiLlama.
That brings the total amount raised by industry players to $13 billion so far this year, up from the $9.5 billion raised in total in 2024.
Pitchbook expects crypto startups to double that figure to $18 billion in 2025.
Here are the three crypto projects that raised the most money in July.
Pump.fun, $590 million
Pump.fun raised $590 million in an initial coin offering at the beginning of July to, as it boldly proclaimed, 'kill Facebook, TikTok, and Twitch' by transforming itself into a new type of social media platform.
At a glance, the controversial memecoin generator token sale seems a grand success. Pump.fun's ICO sold out in just 12 minutes, capping off one of the fastest and largest raises in recent crypto memory.
However, the project sold 2 billion fewer tokens than it had originally planned.
The project had previously said 150 billion PUMP tokens, out of a 330 billion total ICO allocation, would be offered to the public at $0.004 each.
That implied a $600 million raise. But the live dashboard confirms just 148 billion tokens were sold, pulling in $590 million — about 98% of the originally stated public allocation.
The sale came in the same month as the platform is struggling with plummeting revenue amid a memecoin slump and an increasingly crowded market.
And those traditional social media platforms? Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, saw its stock price surge 11% this week, giving it a market cap of just under $2 trillion, about half of the entire cryptocurrency market.
OSL Group, $300 million
Hong Kong-based OSL Group said it has secured $300 million in equity financing.
'The funding will accelerate our global buildout — particularly in regulated payment infrastructure and access points,' Ivan Wong, CFO at OSL Group, said in a statement.
Upexi, $200 million
Upexi, a Solana treasury company, announced a $200 million deal led by Big Brain Holdings at the beginning of July.
The deal took the form of a convertible note offering, and the proceeds will be used to buy more Solana, the company said.
Upexi is part of a wave of crypto treasury companies that have cropped up over the past year. While the bulk of them copy Michael Saylor's Bitcoin-buying strategy, many are also allocating resources to buying altcoins.

Amazon cuts 110 jobs in reorganization of Wondery audio division

Amazon on Monday said it is cutting 110 roles from its audio division Wondery as part of a restructuring effort. The cuts reflect an industry shift toward producing more podcasts with video, a format that has become more popular with consumers who listen to their favorite hosts on platforms including YouTube and Spotify. The layoffs also mark the latest sign of contraction in the once burgeoning podcast industry. In June, Spotify laid of 5% of staff in its podcast division and Philadelphia-based Audacy shut down New York-based Pineapple Street Studios. 'As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series,' Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in a memo to staff. Under the changes, Amazon will combine Wondery's narrative podcast studio with audio books and podcast division, Audible. Wondery staffers in its creator-led podcast studio will be part of a new organization called creator services with Amazon's talent services group. Amazon acquired Wondery in 2020 for an undisclosed amount. The Culver City-based company is known for producing podcast series including 'Dr. Death' 'American Scandal' and 'The Shrink Next Door.' Amazon said the restructuring will help it better support creators across different channels to monetize their content and simplify the process for advertisers, while also 'making the content more accessible to audiences wherever they prefer to consume it.' Wondery CEO Jen Sargent is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities, Amazon said. Ray Wang, principal analyst of Constellation Research, said the reorganization will help the company grow its ad business. 'This makes a lot of sense given how advertisers view both formats,' Wang said.

$90K Grant from FHLB Dallas and Arvest Bank to Fund Affordable Duplexes

FORT SMITH, Ark.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) provided a $90,000 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) grant through Arvest Bank to Community Rescue Mission to assist with the construction of six affordable duplexes, which were celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony today. 'The AHP grant went a long way for us toward being able to complete the project and enter into it debt free' --Community Rescue Mission Director Jordan Bone Share Community Rescue Mission is a nonprofit, faith-based organization that provides shelter, meals and transitional living quarters to help people without housing in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Miller Cottages will consist of three duplexes (six units) for families on land adjacent to Community Rescue Mission's current transitional housing development, which provides 66 rooms and a central dining hall. 'The AHP grant went a long way for us toward being able to complete the project and enter into it debt free,' said Community Rescue Mission Director Jordan Bone. 'We think it will also be a good jumping off point to provide more affordable housing in the future.' Construction is scheduled to begin in August and will take about nine months to complete, he said. Families will pay rent based on their income and are expected to stay in the duplexes for about a year before transitioning into permanent housing. 'We think these duplexes will go a long way in helping families who experience homelessness to become self-sufficient,' Arvest Group CRA Director Virgil Miller said. 'The support that Miller Cottages received from FHLB Dallas was important in reaching this milestone.' AHP funds are awarded through FHLB Dallas member institutions such as Arvest Bank and assist FHLB Dallas members in financing the purchase, construction and rehabilitation of owner-occupied, rental or transitional housing and housing for homeless individuals. The funds must be used to benefit households with incomes at or below 80 percent of the median income for the area. 'Arvest Bank has been a long-time supporter of our AHP grant and this is a great example of how the AHP is being used to increase access to affordable housing in Arkansas,' said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas. In 2024, FHLB Dallas awarded $1 million in AHP General Fund grants to Arkansas-based affordable housing projects, which was part of $78.9 million awarded in its five-state District. FHLB Dallas will announce 2025 grant awardees this fall. Learn more about the FHLB Dallas Affordable Housing Program.
