With the 2025 Oscar nominations out and the awards ceremony only weeks away, we asked the BuzzFeed Community which iconic actors were snubbed by the Academy even though they played truly legendary characters. So, ahead of the March 2 show, here's what people sent our way:
Note: Submissions have been edited for length and/or clarity.
1. Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in Furiosa
— banana_bebop
2. Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire
Warner Bros. Pictures / Via youtube.com
"She was nominated for a Golden Globe but she DESERVED an Oscar nomination. She was a child and gave such a great performance as Claudia and held her own against Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. The scene where she's angrily lashing out at Lestat and Louis over her creation is so brilliantly done that you forget she's not an adult woman trapped in a girl's body. She's an 11-year-old girl."
— monikap6
3. John Goodman in The Gambler
Paramount Pictures / Via youtube.com
"He played against type portraying a ruthless loan shark coming after Mark Wahlberg's gambling-addicted character. From the sauna scene to the final 'good boy,' Goodman was cold, calculating emotionless, and caring only for the money he was owed. Goodman was the best Jabba the Hutt since... Jabba the Hutt."
— sassychair337
4. Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest
Paramount Pictures / Via
5. Sam Rockwell in The Green Mile
Warner Bros / Via youtube.com
"Sam Rockwell should have been nominated alongside Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile (Michael would have won anyway). Sometimes [an] outstanding performance is given an extra push because you have two (or more) actors who complement or contrast each other. I look at this as the sum of all parts played."
— charmingstar3132
6. Liza Minnelli in Arthur
Warner Bros. / Via youtube.com
8. Toni Collette in Hereditary
A24 / Via youtube.com
"Anyone who has seen that performance can't deny that it was masterful."
— shypepper634
"Toni's scream and breakdown when she found out what happened to her daughter still haunts me. It was a tour de force."
— diamond_girl_7
"Performance of her life."
— coolporcupine39
9. Eddie Murphy for Dolemite Is My Name
Netflix / Via youtube.com
"I'm a white guy from England with no clue who Dolemite was or what he meant to people, but I genuinely believe it's one of Eddie's greatest roles. The Golden Globes at least gave him a nomination. Hell, even the Razzies gave him a 'Redeemer Award' for it. Again, I feel like it's the Academy being unfairly prejudiced against comic actors. Giving Eddie a nod would mean so much to so many people."
— jonsharky
10. Taron Egerton in Rocketman
Paramount Pictures
"That boy put everything he had into that performance, and it felt like a pointed snub so close on the heels of Rami Malek winning Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury just the year prior."
— kaitlinh4eea98774
11. Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon
Universal Pictures / Via youtube.com
"Jim Carrey in Man On The Moon and The Truman Show. The former won Carrey a Golden Globe for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role (Comedy or Musical), while the latter had Oscar nominations for Ed Harris as a Supporting Actor and Peter Weir as Director, so the Oscars ignoring Carrey as an actor seemed like pettiness to me."
— jonsharky
12. Philip Seymour Hoffman in Flawless
MGM / Via
13. Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can
DreamWorks Pictures
"Leonardo DiCaprio should've been nominated for Catch Me If You Can and The Departed. He should've won for What's Eating Gilbert Grape."
— boringcadet85
"I'd vote for Django Unchained before Catch Me If You Can. I'm not a fan of his, but he was SO good in the former."
— baobaopanda
14. Kathy Bates and Judy Parfitt in Dolores Claiborne
15. Amy Adams in Arrival
Paramount Pictures / Via youtube.com
16. Margaret Qualley in The Substance
Mubi / Via youtube.com
17. Denzel Washington in Gladiator II
Paramount Pictures / Via youtube.com
"Denzel ate everyone up with his role. The fact that they nominated Edward Norton [for A Complete Unknown ] instead of Denzel... 🙄"
— antoinette_yoo
18. Harrison Ford in Star Wars
Twentieth Century Fox / Via youtube.com
19. Finally, Naomi Scott in Smile 2

Toxic SnyderVerse Fans Prompt James Gunn To Respond Over 'Superman' Boycott

The DC Universe will be fully kicked off with the release of James Gunn's Superman . The new wave of franchise films and shows will take over from the failed attempt at a franchise prior, which started off with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel . Now with a toxic group of SnyderVerse fans attempting to boycott James Gunn's Superman , Gunn has issued his own response. Snyder fans have had varying levels of success with their attempts to restore Zack Snyder's vision for the DC franchise. Fans were able to convince Warner Bros. to allow Zack Snyder the opportunity to finish his own cut of Justice League . Further attempts failed, however, including their desire to have David Ayer's original Suicide Squad cut released or their movement to have Zack Snyder create all-new Justice League sequels. Now, some Snyder fans are attempting to simply ruin the fun for everyone, with a boycott being placed to ruin the success of James Gunn's Superman . While the film is paving the way to be a behemoth at the box office, some fans are eager to disrupt its chances at being a success, with one fan on Reddit having shared the following message that has since been deleted via CBM: 'Fight for our Snyderverse on the imposter Superman release day. Here's what we can do to make a difference 1. Post spoilers everywhere. People are less likely to see or enjoy the movie if it's already spoiled 2. Leave bad rating on review sites. We know for sure gunbots will post fake positive reviews so we must let people know the truth and balance the bias out with realistic scores. 3. Reserve tickets online but don't complete the purchase. By selecting and reserving tickets, it gets taken out of the pool for a period of time which means this has a chance of stopping gunbots from buying tickets Gun fired the first shot and killed the Snyderverse and here is our chance to take the fight back to him.' While some fans are acknowledging the toxic behavior and apologizing on behalf of the Zack Snyder fanbase, and others are worried that it could have an impact on Superman , Gunn doesn't seem to have any worries. In fact, he made a response on Threads to note that 'we'll survive.' 'lol I think we'll survive. I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's a guy) are going to impact the course of events.' James Gunn's Superman will be hitting theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the highly-anticipated blockbuster as we have them.

‘Cobra Kai' creators reveal Hilary Swank declined to join show: ‘Disappointing'

Hilary Swank said thanks, but no thanks. The creators of the hit Netflix show 'Cobra Kai' have revealed that they tried to get Swank, 50, to appear in the popular 'Karate Kid' sequel series. But the Oscar-winning actress, who played Julie Pierce in 1994's 'The Next Karate Kid,' politely declined. 10 The creators of 'Cobra Kai' have revealed that they tried to get Hilary Swank to appear in the popular 'Karate Kid' sequel series. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 10 Swank portrayed Julie Pierce in 'The Next Karate Kid' in 1994. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 'Cobra Kai' creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg opened up about the situation during a sit-down with Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday. 'We did reach out in the very early days before the season to see if there was a path,' Heald said, revealing that they approached the actress shortly before the show's sixth and final season began production in 2024. 'We had an inkling of an idea about how she could come into this story and not have to commit to 10 episodes or something,' he continued. 10 Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi and Swank as Julie Pierce in 'The Next Karate Kid.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 10 The Oscar-winning actress politely declined the 'Cobra Kai' creators' offer for her to appear in the Netflix show. Getty Images 'It was going to feel like it could be a one or two-episode arc, similar to what we did with Elisabeth Shue,' Heald added, 'where you can bring Ali back in at a pivotal moment and affect an important relationship.' Shue, who starred as Ali Mills alongside Ralph Macchio's Daniel LaRusso in the original 1984 'Karate Kid,' reprised her character for the last two episodes of the Netflix show's third season. Although Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg did reach out to Swank's reps to find out if they could have a discussion with her and introduce themselves, the trio never even got that far. 10 'We had an inkling of an idea about how she could come into this story and not have to commit to 10 episodes or something,' creator Josh Heald explained. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 10 'She was just in a place where she wasn't looking to do that,' Heald said. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 'On her end, it was very respectful, but we never got that opportunity to sit down and pour our heart out the way that we typically do when we bring back characters from the legacy,' Heald explained. 'She was just in a place where she wasn't looking to do that.' 'She had had babies. I think she was in production on something at the time, and it was a respectful pass on even the idea of a meeting,' he added. 'She didn't want us to go through the trouble of flying out to her and putting our heart on the sleeve because it just wasn't something she was ready to do at that moment.' Swank welcomed twins with her husband, Philip Schneider, in April 2023. She joined the cast of Showtime's 'Yellowjackets' for Season 3, which premiered this year. 10 'Cobra Kai' followed Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) 34 years after the events of the original 'Karate Kid' movie. ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection 10 Many other characters from the six-movie 'Karate Kid' franchise joined Macchio and Zabka on the small screen for 'Cobra Kai.' ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection Despite Swank's refusal, the three creators still hope to see her return as Julie Pierce in a potential 'Cobra Kai' spinoff. 'It's a big piece of the Miyagi-verse that's still out there,' Heald said. 'For us, it was a little disappointing because we like getting everybody, but at the same time, we didn't sacrifice any huge story that we had fully developed.' 'It's more fruit on the vine for if we can revisit this universe going forward,' he concluded. The Post has reached out to Swank's reps for comment. 10 'Cobra Kai' premiered on Netflix in 2018 and wrapped up its sixth and final season in February. ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection 'Cobra Kai,' which premiered on Netflix in 2018 and wrapped up its sixth and final season in February, followed Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) 34 years after the events of the original 'Karate Kid' movie. While Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg were unable to convince Swank to return, they did bring back other characters from the six-movie franchise to join Macchio, 63, and Zabka, 59, on the small screen. Yuji Okumoto reprised his character Chozen Toguchi from 1986's 'Karate Kid Part II,' and Sean Kanan (Mike Barnes), Thomas Ian Griffith (Terry Silver) and Robyn Lively (Jessica Andrew) all returned to their roles from 1989's 'Karate Kid Part III.' 10 Ralph Macchio with some of his 'Cobra Kai' cast members during a screening of the show in Los Angeles in March 2025. Getty Images Plus, Macchio recently reprised his role as Daniel LaRusso for the 10th time for the franchise's newest film, 'Karate Kid Legends,' which premiered on May 30. The movie also saw Jackie Chan return as Mr. Han from the 2010 'Karate Kid' remake. 'Reprising this role means paying that legacy forward,' Macchio said upon the release of 'Karate Kid Legends' last month. 'It's about spreading that wisdom and knowledge in a good way, in a positive way.' Pat Morita, who played the beloved character Mr. Miyagi in the original 'Karate Kid' trilogy and 'The Next Karate Kid,' died in 2005. He was 73.
