Nick Offerman got 'pretty giggly' over playing Smurfs with John Goodman
To save their world, they must come to ours. 💙 Watch the new Official Trailer for #SmurfsMovie – Only in theatres July 18 Actor Nick Offerman likens getting a movie pitch to the feeling of unwrapping a present at Christmas. "Sometimes it says it has Amy Poehler, and it's written by Mike Schur," Offerman explained in an interview with For The Win. "And this one, it's like, it's Smurfs, and you're like, 'Come on.' And then Rihanna, and then John Goodman as Papa Smurf is so ridiculous." The former Parks and Recreation star is part of a loaded cast, including Goodman and another huge name as his Smurf-y movie brothers. "I am thrilled to get to play brothers, and also to imagine myself in the middle of a trio of men, and the other two are John Goodman and Kurt Russell," said Offerman. "You know, for a farm kid from Illinois, that gets me pretty giggly. So it's been really fun." Smurfs hit theaters on July 18, bringing the little blue beings back to the big screen in the United States for the fourth time. This is the first time, however, that it has been under the Paramount Pictures umbrella. The loaded cast also includes Dan Levy, Sandra Oh, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Sedaris, Hannah Waddingham, James Corden, Nick Kroll and Octavia Spencer. The Smurfs cast is far-and-away its biggest strength, and having a voice work expert like Goodman elevates the project. Goodman has lent his voice to major animated movies like Monsters Inc. (Sullivan), The Emperor's New Groove (Pascha) and The Princess and the Frog ("Big Daddy" La Bouff), and the long-time actor loves the challenge. "It's fun to go away to a pure fantasy place," Goodman gushed. "It's actually a wonderful community that you're helping to create. I mean, it's been created, but you're breathing a little life into it, and thinking of it like that, it just gets you excited."

NIH under fire for funding dog tests despite vow to cut animal research
The US National Institute of Health (NIH) is continuing to fund 'cruel and wasteful' animal experiments involving dogs and cats, despite their recent announcement to reduce animal research. The NIH director, Jay Bhattacharya, announced in April the launch of a new initiative to 'reduce testing in animals' and prioritise 'human-based technologies' such as organ-on-a-chip and real-world data, in a 'new era of innovation' in biomedical research. The move seeks to address longstanding translational failures of animal research to predict human outcomes in diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's, 'due to differences in anatomy, physiology, lifespan, and disease characteristics'. However, information obtained by the animal rights NGO White Coat Waste (WCW) shows that the NIH has in fact funded millions of dollars' worth of new animal experiments. Analysis of project documents and those obtained through Freedom of Information Act (Foia) requests reveal that the NIH has approved nine new grants for dog research since their April announcement, costing the taxpayer over $12m, as well as extending about nine already active, with total study costs of $42m. WCW says these are in addition to the approximately 193 ongoing NIH-funded dog and cat studies, costing about $1.3bn. New experiments uncovered by WCW include toxicology testing of an investigational drug to treat methamphetamine addiction. Toxicology tests often involve force-feeding or injecting dogs with increasingly large doses of a compound daily for up to a year. Extended research includes a cocaine experiment to study cardiovascular effects. This involves beagles being strapped into jackets that inject them with cocaine as well as being force-fed an experimental drug to see how the two drugs interact. Another vaccine experiment involves infecting beagle puppies with viruses by strapping containers full of 'mutant' ticks to their bare skin, sometimes with pain relief intentionally withheld. White Coat Waste, a watchdog to end US taxpayer-funded animal experiments, says the NIH should shut down these laboratories. 'Animal tests are bad spending and bad science, 95% of drugs tested on animals fail in human trials. The NIH's April announcement does not include any spending cuts, deadlines or benchmarks. The rhetoric doesn't match reality right now,' said WCW's senior vice-president, Justin Goodman. The NIH is the primary medical research authority in the US and the world's biggest funder of animal research, spending an estimated $20bn annually. Yet Donald Trump proposes to slash the NIH budget by 40% to $27bn next year. 'Trump hates waste and animal experimentation is the poster child for wasteful spending. The best place to start would be to cut funding for animal labs which make up 40% of the NIH budget. It's outdated, expensive, there's little return for taxpayers and the American people don't want pets tortured,' Goodman says. Despite the cuts, in a move welcomed by Goodman as 'encouraging', the acting NIH deputy director, Dr Nicole Kleinstreuer, said in an NIH podcast last week that dog and cat tests were 'unconscionable' and has pledged to phase them out. 'I don't think we should do research on dogs and cats. Absolutely not. We are constrained under the law to leave those existing grants in place, for now, but to phase them out, we are working tirelessly behind the scenes,' Kleinstreuer said. An NIH spokesperson told the Guardian that to support the organization's 'shift toward human-focused research, all future funding announcements will emphasize human-relevant data such as clinical trials and real-world data, and new approach methods (NAMs) such as advanced laboratory-based methods and AI-driven tools'. 'NIH will no longer issue Notice of Funding announcements exclusively for animal models, and some may exclude animal use entirely advancing science that directly benefits human health,' they continued. The NIH plans to reduce animal research by establishing a new office of research innovation, validation and application (Oriva) to develop and expand NAMs. The NIH have also taken other significant steps away from animal research recently, including 'terminating funding at Harvard University for studies that included sewing the eyes of young monkeys shut' and closing NIH campus beagle labs. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, which supports animal experimentation, has written to the NIH urging 'caution against prematurely removing animal research from the scientific toolkit in lieu of approaches not yet ready to address important biomedical inquiries in full'. Notably, the recent NIH announcements have been welcomed by many as 'historic'. Jarrod Bailey, the director of medical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine told the Guardian that the NIH is 'now leading the way in making research more humane and human-relevant, which will save millions of animal and human lives. 'Changing the way the NIH has operated for decades will take some time. We want to see the NIH delivering more in the coming months, but the significant shift away from animal experiments are unprecedented and very encouraging,' he said. Oriva is part of a broader federal trend in the US. The FDA has also published a roadmap to end animal experiments in preclinical safety studies. Solve the daily Crossword

John Goodman hasn't spoken to former co-star Roseanne Barr in ‘seven or eight years'
John Goodman has revealed he hasn't spoken to his former on-screen wife, Roseanne Barr, in almost a decade. Goodman recently wrapped The Conners, the Roseanne spin off series, which followed the Conner family as they struggled to pick up the pieces after matriarch Roseanne's death. In the finale, Goodman's character Dan visited Roseanne's grave. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, Goodman revealed the status of his relationship with Barr when asked if he had connected with her over the end of the spin off. 'No. I'd rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,' Goodman said. 'We haven't talked for about seven or eight years.' When asked if the silence between them made it hard to do The Conners, Goodman said: 'No. We got a good cast, and everybody stands out.' Goodman and Barr starred on the original 1988 sitcom, which aired for nine seasons. The two had instant chemistry that made the show a hit. Goodman was also asked about working with Barr in those early days of the sitcom, saying: 'We hit it off from jump street. She made me laugh, and I made her laugh, and wow, it was so much fun. We'd get so many viewers for the show back then — 20, 30 million people.' 'Things are so different now, but it was a special time,' he added. The Conners aired its series finale in April after seven seasons. The spin off premiered in 2018 shortly after the planned revival of Roseanne was canceled because of a racist tweet shared by original star Barr, whose character was written off for The Conners, though she was honored in the series finale. The final seconds of the series saw several mainstays from the original series — namely Laurie Metcalf as Jackie, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner, and Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner — tearfully hug one another and say goodnight to the family's patriarch, Dan Conner (Goodman). Goodman was then left alone in the living room as a brief montage of seasons past played, featuring the trio of characters who had just exited. Goodman then broke the fourth wall in a rare break in character. Looking directly at the camera, he smiled, nodded, and said, 'Goodnight' and then walked off, beer in hand. 'I wanted to do it, and they let me, and they kept it,' Goodman told The Hollywood Reporter of that moment. 'I thought it was just us saying, 'Good night, folks. Thank you.''

John Goodman shows off 200-pound weight loss at Smurfs premiere
John Goodman has flaunted his figure at the Smurfs movie premiere after losing 200 pounds in recent years. The Roseanne actor, 73, attended the Los Angeles premiere of his new Smurfs movie Sunday, wearing a navy blue suit complete with a white-collared shirt, patterned tie, and brown dress shoes. Goodman, who voices Papa Smurf in the upcoming film, flashed a huge grin at photographers. Weighing nearly 400 pounds at his heaviest, according to the New York Post, Goodman has lost about 200 pounds using various methods. He first flaunted a slimmer look in 2023 on the red carpet at the 62nd Monte-Carlo TV festival. The Conners star first began his weight loss journey in 2007 at 392 pounds and made the decision to stop drinking. Goodman had cut sugar from his diet and exercised six out of seven days of the week with assistance from a health coach (Getty) 'I'd get off of Roseanne every spring. I'd lose 60 pounds every spring [but] I'd gain it back and then some, every year,' he told David Letterman in 2011. 'It's going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.' The actor went on to hire a health coach, which led to changes like cutting sugar from his diet and working out six days per week. John Goodman flashed a huge grin at the 'Smurfs' premiere (Getty) In a 2017 interview with ABC, Goodman said he would previously go through periods of weight loss, only to reward himself with 'a six-pack or whatever and just go back to old habits.' 'This time, I wanted to do it slowly,' he said at the time. 'Move, exercise. I'm getting to the age where I can't afford to sit still anymore.' One year later, he revealed in an interview with AARP that he considered the key to his successful weight loss to be 'portion control.' 'I was just shoving everything into my mouth,' he said. 'But I don't want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on — when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner's sugar.' Goodman's latest red carpet appearance comes a few days after he revealed that he had not spoken to his former on-screen wife, Roseanne Barr, in almost a decade. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, Goodman revealed the status of his relationship with Barr when asked if he had connected with her over the end of the Roseanne spin-off, The Connors.
