Nick Offerman got 'pretty giggly' over playing Smurfs with John Goodman
Actor Nick Offerman likens getting a movie pitch to the feeling of unwrapping a present at Christmas. "Sometimes it says it has Amy Poehler, and it's written by Mike Schur," Offerman explained in an interview with For The Win. "And this one, it's like, it's Smurfs, and you're like, 'Come on.' And then Rihanna, and then John Goodman as Papa Smurf is so ridiculous."
The former Parks and Recreation star is part of a loaded cast, including Goodman and another huge name as his Smurf-y movie brothers. "I am thrilled to get to play brothers, and also to imagine myself in the middle of a trio of men, and the other two are John Goodman and Kurt Russell," said Offerman. "You know, for a farm kid from Illinois, that gets me pretty giggly. So it's been really fun."
Smurfs hit theaters on July 18, bringing the little blue beings back to the big screen in the United States for the fourth time. This is the first time, however, that it has been under the Paramount Pictures umbrella. The loaded cast also includes Dan Levy, Sandra Oh, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Sedaris, Hannah Waddingham, James Corden, Nick Kroll and Octavia Spencer.
The Smurfs cast is far-and-away its biggest strength, and having a voice work expert like Goodman elevates the project. Goodman has lent his voice to major animated movies like Monsters Inc. (Sullivan), The Emperor's New Groove (Pascha) and The Princess and the Frog ("Big Daddy" La Bouff), and the long-time actor loves the challenge.
"It's fun to go away to a pure fantasy place," Goodman gushed. "It's actually a wonderful community that you're helping to create. I mean, it's been created, but you're breathing a little life into it, and thinking of it like that, it just gets you excited."

A Solid Debut for ‘The Naked Gun'
Save the comedy! That's the message Paramount Pictures was selling ahead of this weekend's opening of 'The Naked Gun,' a sequel to the 1980-90s franchise and one of the few comedy films getting a theatrical release this year. Saved for now … perhaps? The film generated neither blockbuster nor belly-flop results over the weekend, with an estimated $17 million in box office receipts. But the film has received strong reviews — a 90 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- grade on CinemaScore, an exit polling system. And executives at Paramount Pictures think those reviews combined with positive word of mouth will easily help the studio recoup its investment in the film. The comedy, from director Akiva Schaffer, cost $42 million to make with tens of millions more spent to market it. Theatrical comedy is the genre that has been most decimated by the streaming era, and the one that comedians and comedy writers desperately want to return to the big screen. These films began falling off in 2010, according to David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter on box office numbers. Today, the genre generates less than half the box office revenue it once did. How you define a comedy determines how many comedies have been released this year. To some, 'The Naked Gun,' starring Liam Neeson as the bumbling Los Angeles police officer Frank Drebin Jr., is only the second straight-up comedy to hit theaters this calendar year. (Sony Pictures' 'One of Them Days,' released in January, is the other.) Another comedy, the PG-rated 'Freakier Friday' from Disney, will come out next weekend. 'For those of you who don't remember the original 'Naked Gun,' there used to be these movies called comedies,' one of the film's producers, the 'Family Guy' creator Seth MacFarlane, said at a screening in Los Angeles. 'It's been so long since one came out that Paramount asked me to explain to you that it is supposed to be funny, just so you're not confused.' Some comedies on streaming services have found huge audiences. 'Happy Gilmore 2,' a sequel to a 1996 film, became Adam Sandler's most-watched film on Netflix in recent weeks. The streaming company reported that 47 million people tuned in during its first weekend on the service. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Adam Scott recalls this A-list actor getting ‘suddenly famous': ‘It was so crazy'
Adam Scott was totally buggin'. The actor, 52, revealed what it was like to watch his college friend, Paul Rudd, shoot to stardom after the cult classic 'Clueless' came out in 1995. 'When Paul got that job, that's when everything changed and one of my friends was suddenly famous,' Scott recalled while on Entertainment Weekly's 'The Awardist' podcast. 'It was so crazy. Yeah, and that was 30 years ago, too.' 8 Rudd and Adam Scott at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. NBCU Photo Bank The actors first became pals while attending the same university. 'I started at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts the year after he graduated, and already he was kind of famous on campus,' Scott explained. 'I got to school and people were… There was chatter about this guy Paul Rudd, and part of it was because he had already gotten a Nintendo commercial that was airing and it was like, 'Whoa.'' 8 Adam Scott and producer Paul Rudd attend 'Fun Mom Dinner.' Meanwhile, Scott and Rudd didn't meet in person until the 'Parks and Recreation' alum graduated. 'He was there giving out an award as the past star of the school,' Scott reflected. 'I remember I auditioned for 'Clueless,' but not for the role Paul played,' Scott shared. 'I auditioned for some other role.' Rudd's portrayal of Josh in 'Clueless,' opposite Alicia Silverstone's Cher, was the funny man's breakout role. After 'Clueless,' Rudd starred in the 1996 adaptation of 'Romeo + Juliet,' the drama 'The Locusts' in 1997, and 1998's rom-com 'The Object of My Affection' with Jennifer Aniston. 8 Paul Rudd, Rachel Blanchard in the TV series 'Clueless.' ©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection In 2000, Rudd played Nick Carraway in 'The Great Gatsby.' 'Obviously as I've gotten older, I've started to have a different perspective on teenagers, and maybe even more empathy for the fragility of that time. I also have more empathy for parents, now,' he told the Post at the time.
