Nick Offerman got 'pretty giggly' over playing Smurfs with John Goodman

To save their world, they must come to ours. 💙 Watch the new Official Trailer for #SmurfsMovie – Only in theatres July 18 Actor Nick Offerman likens getting a movie pitch to the feeling of unwrapping a present at Christmas. "Sometimes it says it has Amy Poehler, and it's written by Mike Schur," Offerman explained in an interview with For The Win. "And this one, it's like, it's Smurfs, and you're like, 'Come on.' And then Rihanna, and then John Goodman as Papa Smurf is so ridiculous." The former Parks and Recreation star is part of a loaded cast, including Goodman and another huge name as his Smurf-y movie brothers. "I am thrilled to get to play brothers, and also to imagine myself in the middle of a trio of men, and the other two are John Goodman and Kurt Russell," said Offerman. "You know, for a farm kid from Illinois, that gets me pretty giggly. So it's been really fun." Smurfs hit theaters on July 18, bringing the little blue beings back to the big screen in the United States for the fourth time. This is the first time, however, that it has been under the Paramount Pictures umbrella. The loaded cast also includes Dan Levy, Sandra Oh, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Sedaris, Hannah Waddingham, James Corden, Nick Kroll and Octavia Spencer. The Smurfs cast is far-and-away its biggest strength, and having a voice work expert like Goodman elevates the project. Goodman has lent his voice to major animated movies like Monsters Inc. (Sullivan), The Emperor's New Groove (Pascha) and The Princess and the Frog ("Big Daddy" La Bouff), and the long-time actor loves the challenge. "It's fun to go away to a pure fantasy place," Goodman gushed. "It's actually a wonderful community that you're helping to create. I mean, it's been created, but you're breathing a little life into it, and thinking of it like that, it just gets you excited."

The Smurfs are doing an all-day takeover of the Brooklyn Children's Museum this weekend

Blue is the warmest color—at least it will be on Sunday, July 13, when the Brooklyn Children's Museum goes full Smurf for a daylong bash that promises to be equal parts nostalgically wholesome and ridiculously cute. In partnership with Paramount Pictures and just ahead of the July 18 release of Smurfs (featuring none other than Rihanna as Smurfette), the museum is hosting SMURFS Summer, an immersive, hands-on celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. that's part craft fair, part dance party, part scavenger hunt—and all Smurf. Expect the museum to be absolutely swarming with tiny blue fans (and, we're guessing, quite a few big ones). Highlights include a rooftop dance and sing-along to the film's soundtrack, cyanotype art-making in the ColorLab studio and a STEM workshop on natural blue dyes in the Nature's Engineers makerspace. A transformation station will kit kids out with Smurf-y tattoos and props, while a museum-wide scavenger hunt dares them to rescue Papa Smurf and earn a prize. Smurfette, Papa Smurf and No Name will be roaming for photo ops and themed giveaways like activity sheets and temporary tattoos are part of the fun. All activities are included with general museum admission ($15 for adults and kids, $14 for grandparents and free for children under a year old). 'Brooklyn is excited for SMURFS Summer,' said museum president and CEO Atiba T. Edwards. 'This is a great chance to introduce your little ones to those beloved characters and spend some quality, blue bonding time getting silly, creative and adventurous.' And if you're feeling more than a little nostalgic? You're not alone. 'The Smurf spirit of constant creativity, tolerance, faith in the future and respect for others can be found throughout the Museum,' said Paramount's Jennifer Lynch. 'We can't wait to bring SMURFS Summer to this Crown Heights institution.'
