Sing to Me
Ever since their exploits were recorded in Homeric Greek, the warriors of the 'Iliad' have been fixtures of our cultural heritage. But in his latest novel, Browner prefers to focus on the unknown lives that were lost on the fringes of the Trojan War, on the damage years of fighting left behind. SING TO ME (Little, Brown, 213 pp., $28) takes place in an apocalyptic landscape of scorched fields and abandoned villages. Its hero is an 11-year-old boy who finds himself alone on the family farm with only a donkey for company.
Setting off in search of his father and 6-year-old sister, long overdue after a desperate trek to the markets of the nearby city, Hani heads for 'the road everyone takes before they don't come back.' What he finds at its end is a vast smoldering ruin, abandoned by both its defenders and its attackers — except for one severely wounded Greek. An innocent confronted with unspeakable destruction, Hani struggles to understand what the future holds and what his place in it might look like. 'Now,' he thinks to himself, 'the only combatants left are a dying soldier and a boy with a sling. Is this what people mean when they talk about peace? Maybe peace is just war taking a rest.'
The Rarest Fruit
The island of Réunion, a French territory off the east coast of Africa, is known for its vanilla. Less well known is the story of the illiterate enslaved boy who figured out how to hand-pollinate vanilla orchids, allowing the wider world to experience a flavor that had been lost since the 16th century, when the Aztec empire was destroyed by the Spanish.
Edmond Albius made his discovery in 1841, when he was only 12 years old. It was, as Bélem notes in THE RAREST FRUIT (Europa, 189 pp., $24), just one act in the 'tragicomedy' of a Black child adopted, then exploited, abandoned and finally rescued in adulthood by the white planter whose horticultural knowledge he absorbed without benefit of formal schooling. Told he must be content with toiling as a gardener rather than studying to be a botanist, Edmond 'makes do with what he has and what people deign to give him.'
Translated from the French by Hildegarde Serle, Bélem's fictional account of Edmond's experiences is also an ironic portrait of a society in which the official abolition of slavery does little to improve the lives of the formerly enslaved: 'They were running toward freedom as if plowing headlong into a wall, Edmond first among them.'

For JJ Okonkwo, Afrobeats is more than just a genre of music — it's a part of who he is. "Afrobeats holds a special place in my heart because it echoes the rhythm of where I come from," said Okonkwo. Afrobeats is a fairly young genre of music. It gained prominence in the early 2000s, combining West African musical styles with elements of hip-hop, R&B, dancehall and other genres. Okonkwo witnessed the early rise of Afrobeats and he was immediately hooked. "What I love most about Afrobeats is its versatility. It blends with any genre while staying proudly African. The beats bring instant joy, but it's the storytelling, the proverbs, and the punchy lyrics that make it truly unique. You can never mistake Afrobeats for anything else," he said. Okonkwo grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, where he was born into a family of singers and spent his childhood surrounded by music. With his father's record collection and his brother's cassette tapes at his fingertips, Okonkwo was exposed to a wide variety of music. In 2023, when Okonkwo moved to St. John's, he started listening to local radio stations to get a feel for the music scene in Canada. He found the stations were primarily playing mainstream western music with little representation from the Afrobeats genre. "I felt disconnected. It didn't reflect the multicultural reality of Canadian society. That, to me, was a gap." This gap is what inspired him to create Inside Afrobeats, a four-part audio series that explores the history and global impact of Afrobeats music. For Okonkwo, he hopes the series will not only introduce people to some great music, but also raise awareness of the genre. "The goal is to amplify the sound, the stories, and the culture behind the genre, and ensure that African voices and rhythms are part of the national conversation in music and media," said Okonkwo. ‘It's the most empathetic voice in my life': How AI is transforming the lives of neurodivergent people

By Hani Richter -For Cape Town-based filmmaker Kate D'hotman, connecting with movie audiences comes naturally. Far more daunting is speaking with others. 'I've never understood how people [decipher] social cues,' the 40-year-old director of horror films says. D'hotman has autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which can make relating to others exhausting and a challenge. However, since 2022, D'hotman has been a regular user of ChatGPT, the popular AI-powered chatbot from OpenAI, relying on it to overcome communication barriers at work and in her personal life. 'I know it's a machine,' she says. 'But sometimes, honestly, it's the most empathetic voice in my life.' Neurodivergent people — including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia and other conditions — can experience the world differently from the neurotypical norm. Talking to a colleague, or even texting a friend, can entail misread signals, a misunderstood tone and unintended impressions. AI-powered chatbots have emerged as an unlikely ally, helping people navigate social encounters with real-time guidance. Although this new technology is not without risks — in particular some worry about over-reliance — many neurodivergent users now see it as a lifeline. How does it work in practice? For D'hotman, ChatGPT acts as an editor, translator and confidant. Before using the technology, she says communicating in neurotypical spaces was difficult. She recalls how she once sent her boss a bulleted list of ways to improve the company, at their request. But what she took to be a straightforward response was received as overly blunt, and even rude. Now, she regularly runs things by ChatGPT, asking the chatbot to consider the tone and context of her conversations. Sometimes she'll instruct it to take on the role of a psychologist or therapist, asking for help to navigate scenarios as sensitive as a misunderstanding with her best friend. She once uploaded months of messages between them, prompting the chatbot to help her see what she might have otherwise missed. Unlike humans, D'hotman says, the chatbot is positive and non-judgmental. That's a feeling other neurodivergent people can relate to. Sarah Rickwood, a senior project manager in the sales training industry, based in Kent, England, has ADHD and autism. Rickwood says she has ideas that run away with her and often loses people in conversations. 'I don't do myself justice,' she says, noting that ChatGPT has 'allowed me to do a lot more with my brain.' With its help, she can put together emails and business cases more clearly. The use of AI-powered tools is surging. A January study conducted by Google and the polling firm Ipsos found that AI usage globally has jumped 48%, with excitement about the technology's practical benefits now exceeding concerns over its potentially adverse effects. In February, OpenAI told Reuters that its weekly active users surpassed 400 million, of which at least 2 million are paying business users. But for neurodivergent users, these aren't just tools of convenience and some AI-powered chatbots are now being created with the neurodivergent community in mind. Michael Daniel, an engineer and entrepreneur based in Newcastle, Australia, told Reuters that it wasn't until his daughter was diagnosed with autism — and he received the same diagnosis himself — that he realised how much he had been masking his own neurodivergent traits. His desire to communicate more clearly with his neurotypical wife and loved ones inspired him to build Neurotranslator, an AI-powered personal assistant, which he credits with helping him fully understand and process interactions, as well as avoid misunderstandings. 'Wow … that's a unique shirt,' he recalls saying about his wife's outfit one day, without realising how his comment might be perceived. She asked him to run the comment through NeuroTranslator, which helped him recognise that, without a positive affirmation, remarks about a person's appearance could come across as criticism. 'The emotional baggage that comes along with those situations would just disappear within minutes,' he says of using the app. Since its launch in September, Daniel says NeuroTranslator has attracted more than 200 paid subscribers. An earlier web version of the app, called Autistic Translator, amassed 500 monthly paid subscribers. As transformative as this technology has become, some warn against becoming too dependent. The ability to get results on demand can be 'very seductive,' says Larissa Suzuki, a London-based computer scientist and visiting NASA researcher who is herself neurodivergent. Overreliance could be harmful if it inhibits neurodivergent users' ability to function without it, or if the technology itself becomes unreliable — as is already the case with many AI search-engine results, according to a recent study from the Columbia Journalism Review. 'If AI starts screwing up things and getting things wrong,' Suzuki says, 'people might give up on technology, and on themselves." Baring your soul to an AI chatbot does carry risk, agrees Gianluca Mauro, an AI adviser and co-author of Zero to AI. 'The objective [of AI models like ChatGPT] is to satisfy the user,' he says, raising questions about its willingness to offer critical advice. Unlike therapists, these tools aren't bound by ethical codes or professional guidelines. If AI has the potential to become addictive, Mauro adds, regulation should follow. A recent study by Carnegie Mellon and Microsoft (which is a key investor in OpenAI) suggests that long-term overdependence on generative AI tools can undermine users' critical-thinking skills and leave them ill-equipped to manage without it. 'While AI can improve efficiency,' the researchers wrote, 'it may also reduce critical engagement, particularly in routine or lower-stakes tasks in which users simply rely on AI.' While Dr. Melanie Katzman, a clinical psychologist and expert in human behaviour, recognises the benefits of AI for neurodivergent people, she does see downsides, such as giving patients an excuse not to engage with others. A therapist will push their patient to try different things outside of their comfort zone. "I think it's harder for your AI companion to push you," she says. But for users who have come to rely on this technology, such fears are academic. 'A lot of us just end up kind of retreating from society,' warns D'hotman, who says that she barely left the house in the year following her autism diagnosis, feeling overwhelmed. Were she to give up using ChatGPT, she fears she would return to that traumatic period of isolation. 'As somebody who's struggled with a disability my whole life,' she says, 'I need this.'

On the night of her birthday, the entertainment industry came out to watch her star in Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight alongside American-South African actress and director, Embeth Davidtz. Draped in a yellow vintage-inspired dress, Zikhona Bali looked ready to get into her character, Sarah. In the film, Sarah is the black maid who works for the Fuller family on their farm in Zimbabwe, which was Rhodesia at the time. Set towards the end of the Bush War and at the height of political tensions between the white minority and black majority during the country's first free elections, the film captures the events of the time from the eyes of an 8-year-old white girl, Bobo, who finds great companionship from Sarah. 'The story is very relatable to everyone. The character of Sarah moved me because I believe there are a lot of Sarahs where we come from. We carry a bit of Sarah in us; my great-grandmother was a reference for me with her characteristics. I tapped a lot into my great-grandmother, who moved so powerfully, but quietly, who had so much resilience, was strong, but yet delicate. She didn't say much, she didn't speak a lot, but when she spoke, it was very deliberate, cutting and wise.' She adds that her great-grandmother would have been immensely proud of her for telling this story. 'I'm happy for you, but are you going to return to school? When are you returning to school? Yeah, but I'm proud of you,' she imitates what she would've said. In not-so-many words, Sarah uttered emotion and wisdom. This put her life at risk of being attacked and ambushed by ZANU and ZAPU political parties, which represented the black majority. Speaking to Drum about why it is important for young people to not only watch the movie but the memoir it is based on by British-Zimbabwean author, Alexandra Fuller, which was published in 2001, Zikhona praises it for how it deals with different themes. It doesn't only speak to kids. It also speaks to us, grown folks, and it's very relatable. We've been kids before, and we've seen things. We've heard things. We've had our perspective. So the relatable link is that we've also been there. We've also been kids. And what I wish that people can take out of this film is a new or rather different perspective on our history as Africans. 'When I had a meeting with her (Embeth) and she told me about the story and the character, she advised me to read the book, and I read the book, and I sat on the book for a while. It's so difficult to read but very moving too. So it's a human story,' the former Diep City actress shares with Drum. Reflecting on the experience of working with Embeth and the executive producers - Anele Mdoda, Frankie Du Toit and Trevor Noah, she says she loved every minute of it, despite how horrific and sad it was. 'I loved the nuances. I loved being directed by Embers. I loved the intentional visitation from the producers on set. I loved how Embert was so gentle with the story and yet very gentle with us as the past.' The film is officially out in cinemas nationwide from Friday, 25 July 2025.
