New Thunderbolts trailer shows Marvel villains facing new threat without the Avengers

Yahoo10-02-2025

The Thunderbolts are ready to get into action but only because they are the only ones able to deal with a new, terrifying threat, the film's new Super Bowl trailer has revealed.
Marvel has so far been pitching the movie as being about the worst villains in the MCU being brought together as a team but their purpose wasn't revealed until now. The Super Bowl trailer teased that the rag-tag group are tasked with dealing with a dark new threat, and they're the only ones who can possibly step in to do so.
Cue Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) bringing together Yelena (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) to get the job done. The trailer revealed a lot more of what we can expect from their mission, here is what we can take away from it.
The Super Bowl trailer for The Thunderbolts opens on a dark note, with an all-powerful enemy seemingly attacking people at random in New York City. In blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments it can be seen that the Big Apple is being covered in shadows with buildings being destroyed and people disappearing into shadow — a void if you will.
Watch: The Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts*
This is the first glimpse viewers have gotten of The Void, a new all-powerful enemy that has connections to another newbie to the franchise Sentry, aka Bob. Darkness descends on New York City in a big way because of The Void, but fans won't see the usual heroes step up to stop him.
The Avengers are not coming, that's what Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina Allegra de Fontaine tells a courtroom a the start of the trailer. She appears to be making a plea to create a new type of team to face the new threat, with Bucky leading the charge.
Why are the Avengers gone? Well, this may well depends on where the film sits in the Marvel timeline but if it comes directly after the events of Captain America: Brave New World then there could well be a reason Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) et al aren't able to come to their aid. Perhaps the Avengers are too busy dealing with another threat, maybe of the multi-versal kind, which means they're out of the picture when the Void comes knocking.
This brings us to the team that are brought together in order to face The Void — the Thunderbolts*, whose team name has an asterisk seemingly because it is only Red Guardian who likes it. What could their official title be? Well, it's likely that they'll be called the Dark Avengers.
The Dark Avengers are a group not unlike the Suicide Squad of villains who are brought together to take part in secret, dangerous missions where anything goes. Pugh's Yelena comments on this in the Super Bowl trailer, asking if they all "just punch and shoot" to get through the mission.
The implication that the group will do whatever it takes to move away from the mistakes of the past will certainly give them a chance to be seen as something other than the villains they've been painted out to be.
Thunderbolts* premieres in cinemas on 2 May, 2025.

Ryan Reynolds shares mock video reaction to having Deadpool role ‘stolen' by Neil Patrick Harris

Ryan Reynolds has shared a comic video reacting to having the role of Deadpool 'stolen' a forthcoming video game about the character. Marvel's Deadpool VR, a new game for the Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms, was announced at Summer Game Fest 2025 this week – and will see Broadway star Neil Patrick Harris voice the comic book character that Reynolds has played on screen since 2009. Just hours after the trailer for Marvel's Deadpool VR was released online, Reynolds shared a video in which he can be seen 'over-reacting' to the news. In the video, Reynolds can be seen wearing a lab coat and glasses, in an apparent imitation of Harris in the latter's star-making role, as a teenage physician in the sitcom Doogie Howser, MD. Journaling on his personal computer, Reynolds writes: 'Today, I learned a lesson about buttholes they don't teach you in medical school. 'People who steal your signature role are the biggest buttholes of all,' he continues. 'No, I don't blame Meta Quest. Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing actor with the nurturing voice of an angel, but even though I haven't hit puberty yet, I still know when you're getting totally screwed.' Reynolds is then interrupted by the appearance of Robyn Lively, who tells him that he's being 'vindictive and stupid'. Lively, the half-sister of Reynolds' wife Blake Lively, appeared in Doogie Howser as a nursing student who dates Harris's character. Fans reacted positively to the video on social media, with one person writing: 'Ryan is a goat for this.' 'It's funny that most people don't realise he's parodying NPH's old show as revenge for taking the Deadpool role. But, it also just reminds me how old I am because I instantly recognised the reference,' another wrote. 'It's like they didn't even ASK him. Because you know Ryan would've PAID to do the voice,' someone else claimed. Reynolds has portrayed the character of Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, in four feature films: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) Deadpool (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). While Reynolds was not one of the many names announced to star in the forthcoming Avengers sequel, it is widely expected that Reynolds will reprise the character in a future Marvel film.

Ryan Reynolds spoofs 'Doogie Howser M.D.', calls Neil Patrick Harris a 'butthole' for stealing Deadpool game role

Ryan Reynolds isn't letting go of Deadpool without a fight — or at least some carefully plotted vengeance. After several years as the face, voice and personal cheerleader of the merc with a mouth, Reynolds has been usurped by Neil Patrick Harris, who is set to voice the comic book character in Marvel's Deadpool VR, a new game for the Meta Quest 3 and 3S. And Reynolds is taking the news about as well as expected. Hours after the trailer for the game arrived on Saturday, Reynolds shared a video in which he is seen "overreacting" to the news. The video opens with the Deadpool & Wolverine star sitting at a decades-old computer while wearing glasses and a lab coat in an apartment eerily similar to that of the title character in Doogie Howser, MD., Harris' star-making role. "Today, I learned a lesson about buttholes they don't teach you in medical school," Reynolds narrates. "People who steal your signature role are the biggest buttholes of all." Spoofing the journal entries that Doogie often made on the show, Reynolds continued, "No, I don't blame Meta Quest. Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing actor with the nurturing voice of an angel, but even though I haven't hit puberty yet, I still know when you're getting totally screwed." Reynolds is then interrupted by the appearance of Robyn Lively, who played a love interest to Harris in Doogie Howser M.D. "House call," she announces. Staying in character, Reynolds says, "My girlfriend, what are you doing here? If my dad sees you here, he's gonna freak." But Lively, the half-sister of Reynolds' wife Blake Lively, doesn't play along. "You're a 48-year-old man," she reminds him. "I'm a 14-year-old medical prodigy who's going through the change," Reynolds insists, sticking to the stolen character before breaking the fourth wall to remind her: "Robin, you're being paid." Lively ignores him and deadpans, "This is vindictive and stupid." But Reynolds is not dissuaded from his revenge quest. Later, he even attempts to double down on the role of Doogie by going in for a kiss with Robyn, but can't bring himself to do it. "I don't think we should do that because you're my sister-in-law," he says, giving up. Lively replies, "You're so dumb." While Reynolds' tenure as Doogie was shortlived, Harris is committing to his role as Deadpool. The trailer for the upcoming game promises an adventure that's "not for the faint of heart," warning players to "put on your big-kid undies and strap in for a violent, expletive-ridden good time." The game is slated to drop later this year. In the meantime, watch Reynolds attempt to steal the role of Doogie in the video above. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
