THUNDERBOLTS* Director Reveals the Intense Character "Shame Room" Moments Cut From The Movie — GeekTyrant

Marvel's Thunderbolts* packs in plenty of action and emotional weight, especially in its final act where things get a little metaphysical. But according to director Jake Schreier, some of the film's gut-punching character moments, especially from The Void sequence, never made it to screen. In the film, Yelena, U.S. Agent, and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine all physically interact with Bob (aka The Sentry) and are pulled into their personal "shame rooms", which are psychological spaces forcing them to relive their darkest, most painful memories. The concept gets escalated later when Yelena enters The Void, where we briefly glimpse buried memories and trauma... but only hers and The Sentry's get any real screen time. Whiles peaking with Variety, Schreier confirmed that the rest of the team's journeys through The Void were indeed written and storyboarded. They were ready to go, but ultimately, left on the cutting room floor. The decision was made to center the film's emotional climax around Bob's internal battle rather than crowd it with too many competing threads. When talking about what was planned, Schreier revealed: 'We had Alexei in the gulag, I think, having been thrown in there. I believe Ghost's was about her time in the orphanage, and being this girl that no one wanted to be around — to be able to be invisible and see the way that you're perceived and no one wanting to associate with you felt very sad.' That sounds like another great scene for Ghost, a character who is already going through bouts of loneliness and struggle. As for Bucky's moment' 'We had a lot of different Bucky ones. We always wanted to do something a little less than the expected idea. There's some very obvious things for Bucky, but I think at one point, Joanna had written something around some shameful moment in Boy Scout camp. But I don't know that that would have really been the right path for it.' It's a glimpse into the kind of character-driven storytelling the cast was helping shape behind the scenes. Schreier praised the actors for staying tuned into their characters' emotional truths. 'That's the nice thing with working with these actors. They're such invested, caring guardians of their characters and their arcs that they'll let you know something feels false or not right to them.' While the final cut leaned into Bob's internal war and the massive implications of The Void , it sounds like Marvel fans were just a few storyboard pages away from a series of character-defining moments that could've made the ending even more emotionally charged. Would you want to see those deleted scenes in a director's cut?

Marvel begins Thunderbolts rebrand after post-credits reveal [spoilers]

Days after its May 2 debut, Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts is being rebranded in official marketing as The New Avengers. The rebrand follows the in-story reveal of the asterisk's meaning, which ties directly into the film's ending. The film concludes with the antihero team — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker — regrouping after stopping 'The Void.' They confront Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, but she deflects consequences by staging a press conference and presenting the group to the public as the 'New Avengers.' The post-credits scene confirms the team has already been operating under that name for over a year. Entertainment journalist Jarett Wieselman shared photos on social media showing updated billboards now using the New Avengers title. The quick turnaround may surprise some fans, but the Avengers branding is expected to drive broader interest. Marvel's move clearly signals its intent to position the team as central to the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film also boasts a star-studded ensemble from the MCU. Returning cast members include Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Newcomers Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, and Wendell Pierce also join the cast. Jake Schreier directs, with Kevin Feige producing and Louis D'Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez as executive producers. The film is scored by Oscar-nominated band Son Lux. It blends action and introspection as the characters confront their pasts and seek redemption. With The New Avengers now headlining the franchise, Marvel is setting the stage for a bold new chapter.

What does the Thunderbolts* asterisk mean in the title?

What does the Thunderbolts* asterisk mean in the title? When the Marvel Cinematic Universe announced its most recent movie, it was simply Thunderbolts. During filming, however, the title got a new accessory as the movie's stars and the studio added an asterisk. It became Thunderbolts* as the official title, but no one knew exactly what it all meant. With the release of the movie on May 2, we now know. WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THUNDERBOLTS* AHEAD The unlikely group made up of Yelena (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour) and newcomer Bob (Lewis Pullman) have to team up to defeat The Void. After they emerged from the endless maze of shame rooms that make up The Void, the ragtag team thought they were going to arrest the diabolical Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Instead, the Thunderbolts -- previously named for Yelena's youth soccer team the Westchester Big Valley Thunderbolts -- were dubbed "the New Avengers." And thus ended the asterisk. Thanks to the Thunderbolts* post credit scene, we also know that the New Avengers will return in the upcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Why 'The Void' could be MCU's most dangerous villain yet; read here?

As the highly anticipated "Thunderbolts" hit theaters globally today (May 2, 2025), a key question lingers in the minds of fans who are yet to watch the film, fueled by the official trailers: What exactly is the nature of ' The Void '? Trailers have showcased Lewis Pullman in a shadowy and menacing light, credited as Robert 'Bob' Reynolds or Sentry. Adding to the intrigue, Pullman's character ominously declares in one trailer, "I'm the Void. There's no use fighting." This statement is immediately followed by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) proclaiming, "He's invincible, all-powerful, stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one," a claim seemingly validated by The Void 's subsequent display of immense power. However, a contrasting piece of dialogue in another trailer, delivered by Fontaine's assistant, Mel (Geraldine Viswanathan), introduces an element of confusion. Mel warns, "Sentry's gone off the rails and he's dangerous. The Avengers are gone. No one is coming to save the day," prompting the central question: Are The Void and Sentry distinct entities or two sides of the same coin? This sinister force was unleashed when Reynolds consumed a serum that transformed him into the Sentry. Acting as a constant counterforce, The Void embodies all of Sentry's negative emotions, fears, and potential for destruction. Unlike a parasitic symbiote, The Void is a manifestation of Reynolds' own psyche, a shadow that can take on myriad terrifying forms. Its power is so immense that it possesses the capability to obliterate Earth, and potentially even the universe. Robert Reynolds is engaged in a perpetual internal battle to suppress The Void, which inevitably surfaces each time he utilizes his extraordinary powers for benevolent purposes. In essence, The Void is born from his own mind, forever existing as his ultimate nemesis. Terrifying powers of the void Whether manifesting as a distinct entity or as a dominant aspect of the Sentry, The Void possesses a terrifying array of superpowers. These superpowers include: Matter Manipulation : He exhibits conscious control over both inorganic and, at times, organic matter at the fundamental levels – molecular, sub-molecular, atomic, and sub-atomic. Regeneration : The Void can heal at an astonishingly accelerated rate, with the potential to regenerate entire missing limbs. Immortality : It is essentially incapable of true death. Comic book lore even depicts its survival after being hurled into the sun by Robert and subsequently struck by a powerful lightning bolt from Thor. Superhuman Strength : Its physical capabilities directly mirror and often surpass those of its counterpart, with some suggesting The Void possesses visibly greater strength than the Sentry. Biological Manipulation : Similar to the Sentry, The Void possesses an as-yet-untapped capacity to influence organic matter in seemingly limitless ways. However, while the Sentry tends to manifest more beneficial applications of this ability, The Void utilizes it for malevolent purposes. Marvel Studio's 'Thunderbolts*' released today on May 2 in the US and May 1st in India. The film made an earlier premier in the UK, releasing on the 22nd of April, 2025. The movie stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Lewis Pullman, promising a thrilling and complex addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe .

Meet The Void: The bad guy in Thunderbolts*

As 'Thunderbolts*' approaches your nearest movie theatre, the official trailers have not yet clarified the doubt as to who 'The Void' is. In the trailer, Lewis Pullman appears as a shadowy figure and is credited as Robert 'Bob' Reynolds / Sentry. Also read: Thunderbolts* is yet another symptom of Marvel's creative fatigue... In the trailer, Pullman says 'I'm the Void. There's no use fighting.' Moments later, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) says 'He's invincible, all-powerful, stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one.' After which The Void goes on to demonstrate everything Fontaine said. However, in another trailer, Fontaine's assistant, Mel (played by Geraldine Viswanathan), says 'Sentry's gone off the rails and he's dangerous. The Avengers are gone. No one is coming to save the day,' which creates a tad bit of confusion for all of us. The Void is the dark entity bonded to Robert Reynolds when he became the Sentry by consuming a serum. The Void acts as a counterforce and embodiment of Sentry's negative aspects. The Void isn't a visible parasite like the symbiote in Venom, but it is more like a force that can take any shape it chooses. It is capable of destroying the Earth if not the universe, and Robert fights a constant tug-of-war to keep The Void at bay as it shows up every time he uses his powers for good. The Void is born in his own psyche and his eternal nemesis. The Void - both as a part of the Sentry and a separate entity - possesses abilities like: - Matter manipulation – Capable of consciously manipulating inorganic, and sometimes organic, matter at the molecular, sub-molecular, atomic, or sub-atomic scale. - Regeneration – Can heal at an accelerated rate, possibly even regrowing missing limbs. - Immortality – Cannot and will not ever truly die. In the comic books, he doesn't die even after being hurled into the sun by Robert and later killed by a bolt of lightning by Thor. - Superhuman strength – Its physical abilities are a direct mirror reflection of its counterpart, though it's reputed that The Sentry is visibly stronger. - Biological Manipulation – Like Sentry, it has an untapped capacity to affect organic matter in undisclosed but seemingly unlimited ways. The Void uses such attributes to malignant ends, while Sentry acclimates more beneficial ones.
