
Scientists amazed to discover an 'interstellar tunnel' that connects our solar system to other stars
Scientists have discovered an 'interstellar tunnel' that connects our solar system to distant stars.
In a new study, scientists at the Max Planck Institute identified two hot tunnels, stretching across vast regions of space.
The researchers gathered thousands of measurements of the sky using the eROSITA X-ray telescope, a satellite launched in 2019.
This revealed that the sun is in the middle of a low-density bubble, around 300 light-years across, from which huge interstellar tunnels emerge.
One channel stretches out towards the constellation Centaurus, punching through the surrounding cool regions of space.
The other tunnel links our solar system with the constellation Canis Major.
The researchers believe these two channels may be part of a larger branching system that runs between different star-forming regions.
Scientists have known for a long time that our solar system is in a strange pocket of hot, less-dense space known as the 'Local Hot Bubble'.
This region is believed to be a 'supernovae graveyard', carved out by the explosions of dying stars 1`0 to 20 million years ago.
When extremely massive stars burn through all of their fuel, they collapse in on themselves and generate enough pressure to explode into supernovae.
These blasts create a wave of hot plasma that pushes gas and dust along with it, leaving behind a hot, low-density cavity.
The region was originally proposed to explain measurements of 'soft X-rays', photons carrying very small amounts of energy.
Since these soft X-rays can't travel very far through space without being absorbed, the fact that we are able to detect them suggests that there could be an X-ray-emitting plasma that has pushed everything else out of the way.
By taking measurements from eROSITA, 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometres) from Earth, scientists have been able to measure these very faint traces of radiation without the disturbances of Earth's atmosphere.
These were combined with measurements from the German ROSAT X-ray telescope, which was launched in 1990, to make the cleanest X-ray map of the universe ever produced.
However, these very sensitive measurements also revealed something strange.
After dividing the Milky Way into 2,000 distinct regions, the researchers realised that the Galactic North was distinctly cooler than the Galactic South.
This means that the Local Hot Bubble is stretching away from the Galactic Disc, travelling in the direction of least resistance.
Co-author Dr Michael Freyberg, of the Max Planck Institute, says: 'This is not surprising, as was already found by the ROSAT survey.
'What we didn't know was the existence of an interstellar tunnel towards Centaurus, which carves a gap in the cooler interstellar medium.'
This is in addition to a more precise measurement of the previously known interstellar tunnel leading towards Canis Major.
This tunnel is thought to stretch between the local hot bubble and the Gum Nebula, 1,500 light-years from Earth.
In their paper, published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, the researchers say this 'hints at the possibility of a widespread tunnel network connecting regions filled by the hot phase of the ISM [interstellar medium].'
This interstellar network is maintained by the explosive births and deaths of stars, which create powerful solar winds.
Previous research has shown that the supernova shockwave that created the Local Hot Bubble collected up gas and debris at its edge, creating the conditions for new stars to form.
These new stars then produce jets of hot gases and radiation, which push out until they reach other star-forming bubbles.
This process, known as 'stellar feedback', is believed to sweep across the Milky Way, shaping the structure of the galaxy as it goes.
This study also gives a fascinating hint at the origins of our own solar system.
The researchers say that our sun was not formed within the Local Hot Bubble, but only entered it by chance relatively recently.
Co-author Dr Gabriele Ponti says: 'Another interesting fact is that the sun must have entered the LHB a few million years ago, a short time compared to the age of the sun [4.6 billion years].
'It is purely coincidental that the sun seems to occupy a relatively central position in the LHB as we continuously move through the Milky Way.'
SUPERNOVAE OCCUR WHEN A GIANT STAR EXPLODES
A supernova occurs when a star explodes, shooting debris and particles into space.
A supernova burns for only a short period of time, but it can tell scientists a lot about how the universe began.
One kind of supernova has shown scientists that we live in an expanding universe, one that is growing at an ever increasing rate.
Scientists have also determined that supernovas play a key role in distributing elements throughout the universe.
There are two known types of supernova.
The first type occurs in binary star systems when one of the two stars, a carbon-oxygen white dwarf, steals matter from its companion star.
Eventually, the white dwarf accumulates too much matter, causing the star to explode, resulting in a supernova.
The second type of supernova occurs at the end of a single star's lifetime.
As the star runs out of nuclear fuel, some of its mass flows into its core.
Eventually, the core is so heavy it can't stand its own gravitational force and the core collapses, resulting in another giant explosion.
Many elements found on Earth are made in the core of stars and these elements travel on to form new stars, planets and everything else in the universe.

Now a new study has attempted to solve that problem with the creation of a new kind of animal: space mice babies. Researchers at Kyoto University took stem cells from mice and froze them so they could be preserved. They were then sent to the International Space Station, where they were kept in a freezer for six months. When they came back down to Kyoto, the team examined them to see if there were any abnormalities, and could not find any. But to test further, they took those cells and put them into a mouse, where they eventually led to offspring after the mice mated. They found that the mice themselves appeared healthy and the genes worked as normal. They suggest that frozen germ cells stay fertile for at least six months in space. "It is important to examine how long we can store germ cells in the ISS to better understand the limits of storage for future human spaceflight," said first author Mito Kanatsu-Shinohara in a statement. The research suggests that similar cells could be frozen for future spaceflight. But more work is needed, including watching the mice throughout their lifespan as well as for any changes that might be seen in their offspring. The work is described in a new paper, 'Germline transmission of cryopreserved mouse spermatogonial stem cells maintained on the International Space Station', published in the journal Stem Cell Reports.

Discrete medical device linked to lower risk of dementia
Hearing aids could slash the risk of dementia by almost two thirds, new findings suggest. Hearing loss has been strongly linked to neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. While the exact mechanisms are unclear, one of the theories is that when the brain has to work harder to process a degraded auditory signal, it diverts resources from other cognitive functions, potentially accelerating cognitive decline. With this in mind, a team of researchers in the US looked at data from 2,953 participants over a 20 year period to analyze how hearing aid use could help ward off signs of dementia. From their analysis, they found participants with hearing loss who wore hearing aids had a 61 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who did not wear the devices. However, they highlighted that only 17 percent of individuals with moderate to severe hearing loss use hearing aids. The researchers say the findings 'underscore the importance of early intervention for hearing loss to reduce risk of incident dementia'. The study's finding show similar results to previous research. A 2023 study of nearly 1,000 adults by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine compared the rate of cognitive decline over a three-year period between people who did and didn't receive hearing aids. Researchers found those who received hearing aids had a 48 percent reduction in the rate of cognitive decline compared with people who didn't get the devices. In response, Professor Frank Lin, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, said: 'These results provide compelling evidence that treating hearing loss is a powerful tool to protect cognitive function in later life, and possibly, over the long term, delay a dementia diagnosis. 'But any cognitive benefits of treating age-related hearing loss are likely to vary depending on an individual's risk of cognitive decline.' Along with hearing loss putting an increased workload on the brain, Professor Lin believes that it can also make people feel more isolated and less socially engaged, which can contribute to dementia. He explained: 'When you have hearing loss, you may not be as socially engaged. 'You may become more lonely or withdrawn. One thing we know about risk of dementia and cognitive decline is that if people don't remain engaged with cognitively stimulating activities, it is not good for the brain.' Hearing loss has been strongly linked to neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, but it has so far been unclear whether it is a symptom or one of the causes behind the illness. Age-related hearing loss is extremely common, with an estimated one in three people over 60 in the US having some degree of hearing loss, with women at a slightly higher risk than men. However, only around a third of this population use hearing aids. In the US, over 7 million individuals aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's disease with this number projected to nearly double to 13 million by 2050. It is thought to be caused by a build-up of amyloid and tau in the brain, which clump together and from plaques and tangles that make it harder for the brain to work properly. Eventually, the brain struggles to cope with this damage and dementia symptoms develop. Memory problems, thinking and reasoning difficulties and language problems are common early symptoms of the condition, which then worsen over time. The condition is more prevalent among females, with around two-thirds of cases occurring in women. The increased risk among women is attributed to a combination of factors, including women's longer life expectancy, hormonal changes associated with menopause, genetic predispositions, and lifestyle influences. Other risks for dementia include high blood pressure, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol use and uncontrolled diabetes. Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids can be purchased directly from retail stores or online without a prescription or professional fitting by an audiologist. However, audiologists can also provide prescription-strength hearing aids, which may be necessary for more severe hearing loss or for those who prefer a customized fitting. Despite them being readily available, many people still don't seek help or wear hearing aids because of the perceived stigma around them. However, with technological advancements and a growing preference for sleek, discreet designs, hearing aids are becoming increasingly popular. The hearing aids market is expected to reach $45.68 billion by 2031, an increase from $28.75 billion in 2024, which experts say is largely due to an aging population. Previous research has suggested hearing loss can contribute to a faster rate of brain wasting as well as prompt social isolation – another known risk factor of mental decline. Scientists also believe it may also make the brain work harder to the detriment of other mental functions like thinking and memory.

‘Fat jabs' for cats and dogs coming to a vet near you
Weight-loss treatments for pets are being created to help obese animals slim down. Veterinary versions of revolutionary GLP-1 drugs, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, are being developed and tested by scientists. But while the human medicines are administered by injections once a week, the pet drugs would be delivered via implants. Early stage clinical trials in cats found that small doses of the drug exenatide, which works in a similar way to semaglutide and tirzepatide, is effective at reducing the animals' calorie intake and body weight. A study last year fitted five cats with an experimental subcutaneous implant, known as OKV-119, which released the weight loss chemical into the blood for 84 days. Analysis found four of five cats had a reduction in body mass of at least five per cent. This drug-delivery system trial is now being extended to dogs as part of a partnership between drug companies Okava and Vivani. If the trials are successful, the drugs could be available as early as 2028. 'What owners should expect to see is their pet eating appropriate portions without the previous food obsession – they'll still eat regularly and show interest in meals, just without the excessive begging, scavenging or gulping behaviour,' Michael Klotsman, the Okava chief executive, told The Guardian. He added that the medication should be viewed as an 'additional tool' rather than a first action for overweight dogs. Excess body weight can shorten lives of pets and reduce the quality of their life as well, with increased risk of cancers, arthritis, heart disease and other ailments. Some breeds are more prone to being overweight than others, with labradors among the most fat-prone of dogs. One in four labradors has a genetic fault in the POMC gene, which makes them 25 per cent slower at burning calories. The faulty POMC gene is also seen in two thirds of flat-coated retrievers, data show, and is linked to a heightened risk of obesity and being motivated by food. It is thought that around half of all cats and dogs in the UK are overweight, and scientists advise that owners worried about their pet's weight focus on regular exercise and not overfeeding. Snacks can quickly add up calorie intake and exceed a pet's recommended amount, especially in smaller pets, which need only a small amount of calories a day.
