
The lesson Asean must draw from the Trump-Musk quarrel
THE public spat between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk should be viewed with detached clarity by Asean policymakers and observers.
It is neither a signal of a shift in American foreign policy nor does it foreshadow a major realignment in the global tech landscape.
In his second term, Trump has doubled down on his view that the US must be ruled not by institutions but by personalities.
He has no patience with those who challenge his centrality.
Musk, once an object of Trump's admiration, has become a rival personality. The former's influence spans multiple domains — space, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and digital media.
In the eyes of Trump, this influence must be subordinate to political loyalty. Musk's criticism of Trump, whether on policy, personality or principle, has thus drawn an inevitable response.
Yet Musk is no innocent bystander. His relentless need to comment, provoke and insert himself into the political arena has increasingly eroded the neutrality that once insulated Tesla and SpaceX from partisan warfare.
Since acquiring Twitter — renamed X — Musk has made the platform a personal amplifier of his views, often blurring the line between corporate strategy and personal vendetta.
Just as Trump cannot resist attacking, Musk cannot help but respond. The result is a digital 'blood sport'.
At a deeper level, Musk's recent provocations may be to deflect attention from his growing troubles. Tesla, long seen as the undisputed champion of electric vehicles, is now steadily losing global market share to China's BYD.
Despite Musk's early-mover advantage, the Chinese EV juggernaut has surpassed Tesla in both unit sales and technological innovation, especially in markets across Asia and the Global South.
This shift is not just commercial — it is geopolitical. China's industrial policy, from lithium refining to battery standardisation, has enabled firms like BYD to undercut and outpace American competitors.
Tesla, by contrast, faces domestic regulatory scrutiny, investor fatigue and inconsistent leadership. Musk, who once rode the wave of futuristic optimism, is now increasingly seen as a mercurial figure whose ventures are overextended and reactive.
While American media and pundits obsess about this feud, Asean must resist being distracted.
The region is entering a critical decade in which its ability to lead on green transition, artificial intelligence governance and maritime security will define its global role.
Whether Musk and Trump call each other names or trade blows on social media is irrelevant to the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, or to the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
Moreover, if there is a lesson to draw from this spectacle, it is the danger of personalising power. Asean's strength has always rested in its ability to temper egos through consensus and consultation.
That is not a flaw but a survival mechanism. The bloc should be wary of importing political styles rooted in personality cults, where institutions are hollowed out in favour of personal charisma and performative leadership.
Musk and Trump are both creatures of the same American pathology: the belief that individual willpower, when fused with wealth or fame, is enough to override complex systems.
But Asean is different. The region's success depends not on dominant personalities but on the patient weaving of trust, rules and interdependence.
Ultimately, Asean must tune out the noise. There are far more pressing issues to confront — from resolving the Myanmar crisis and addressing climate-induced migration, to strengthening regional supply chains and ensuring cybersecurity.
The Musk-Trump bust-up may dominate headlines in Washington, but it is only a sideshow to the real geopolitical currents shaping Asia's future.

EU pushes China to address ‘alarming' rare earth export controls
The EU has urged China to stop restricting the export of rare earth minerals and magnets, with the bloc's trade chief saying its industries are in an 'alarming situation'. The request was made during a meeting between the sides' top commerce officials in Paris on Tuesday. It comes as sectors across Europe raise the alarm about a shortage of rare earths, which are used to manufacture hi-tech goods ranging from electric cars and smartphones to military tanks and aircraft. 'I informed my Chinese counterpart about the alarming situation in the European car industry, but I would say industry as such because clearly rare earths and permanent magnets are absolutely essential for industrial production,' Maros Sefcovic said on Wednesday, briefing reporters a day after his meeting with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. Around 90 per cent of the world's supply of rare earth minerals comes from China, which introduced export controls on their shipments in April in retaliation to US President Donald Trump's 'reciprocal' tariffs. Rare earths consist of 17 elements. On April 4, Beijing added seven of these – dysprosium, gadolinium, lutetium, samarium, scandium, terbium and yttrium – to its export control list, plus several rare earth magnets, two days after Trump announced 'reciprocal tariffs', meaning licenses are now required for their export. While such restrictions were ostensibly intended to punish the US, firms around the world have been caught in the crossfire. Business chambers and industry groups have urged European governments to push for a solution, as mineral stocks run low and some areas of production grind to a halt. European companies have complained that China's commerce ministry seemed incapable of handling the voluminous requests, with licenses being issued slowly and on a piecemeal basis. 'Some applicants are asked for sensitive information that might compromise their intellectual property so they're reluctant to hand that over, but they need to if they want to get approval,' Adam Dunnett, secretary general at the EU Chamber of Commerce in China, said. The chamber has held 'emergency meetings' with Chinese authorities in recent days after an outpouring of anxiety from across European industry. 'I haven't seen anything of this magnitude for a long time,' Dunnett said of the level of concern among EU businesses. Sefcovic said that the two sides had compared figures on the number of applications versus the licenses issued. The figures did not match, Sefcovic said, adding that the EU would supply Beijing with 'all the data and would cover all the companies which are now in an extremely difficult situation'. Sefcovic suggested that Beijing could simplify its system, which now screens all requests for 'dual use' applications, meaning the rare earths could go towards military production. 'Some of the car companies are already announcing that if this issue is not addressed, there might be huge production difficulties in a short period of time,' Sefcovic said. 'His information was a little bit different, and therefore we agreed that he would clarify this as soon as possible, and that we would also address the propositions I made yesterday, and this was that our strong preference here,' he added. The EU's proposals include 'not to cover ... civilian production by this very complex system', Sefcovic said. The bloc would also like to see a 'general application ... to cover it once a year for the whole production', eliminating the need for cumbersome repeat applications. Sefcovic said the EU wanted the changes to avoid 'huge paperwork delays and stress, which this presents for our industry and for our companies. 'We agree that we will come back to this issue relatively soon.' Also on Wednesday, the EU named 13 projects it would initiate beyond its borders to help improve its self-sufficiency in rare earths and critical minerals. 'The export bans reinforce our will to diversify and perhaps even strengthen the relevance of our focus on reducing dependencies,' Stephane Sejourne, the European Commission's head of industrial strategy, said in announcing the projects in Brussels. Two projects will cover rare earth minerals in Malawi and South Africa, while others focus on various raw materials in Britain, Canada, Greenland, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine, Zambia, Brazil and New Caledonia, a French overseas territory. The rare earth crisis adds another complication to already tense EU-China trade ties. Earlier this week, the bloc's member states voted to exclude Chinese companies from its lucrative medical devices procurement market after Beijing refused to open its tenders to the EU. In a bid to crack down on a deluge of small packages from Chinese e-tailers Temu and Shein, Brussels plans to add a surcharge of €2 (US$2.28) to small parcels imported. The EU also remains frustrated over Beijing's refusal to acknowledge state subsidies that it claims are leading to market-distorting industrial overcapacity. Indonesia's FM calls for stronger Asean mechanisms after Vision 2045 adoption
JAKARTA/MANILA (Bernama): Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for strengthening Asean's institutional mechanisms, including its diplomatic corps and central bodies, to effectively implement the Asean Community Vision 2045 adopted at last month's summit in Kuala Lumpur. At a meeting with the Committee of Permanent Representatives to Asean (CPR) and Timor-Leste's Ambassador to Asean at the Foreign Ministry here, he praised the progress achieved through Asean's cooperation frameworks, especially after the adoption of the Asean Community Vision (ACV) 2045. He said the long-term vision, adopted at the 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur last month, outlines a strategic roadmap for the next two decades, envisaging a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred Asean. "We need to strengthen Asean mechanisms, including the CPR, and bolster the Asean Secretariat and Asean Headquarters in Jakarta to optimise our potential in addressing challenges within the region and globally,' he said. Sugiono also underscored the CPR's role in fostering community building, facilitating cross-pillar coordination, and engaging with Asean's external partners, as it is essential to achieving the goals of ACV. Trump's threat to cancel Musk's contracts exposes risks of US reliance on SpaceX
WASHINGTON, June 7 — SpaceX's rockets ferry US astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Starlink satellite constellation blankets the globe with broadband, and the company is embedded in some of the Pentagon's most sensitive projects, including tracking hypersonic missiles. So when President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to cancel Elon Musk's federal contracts, space watchers snapped to attention. Musk, the world's richest person, shot back that he would mothball Dragon—the capsule Nasa relies on for crew flights—before retracting the threat a few hours later. For now, experts say mutual dependence should keep a full-blown rupture at bay, but the episode exposes just how disruptive any break could be. Founded in 2002, SpaceX leapfrogged legacy contractors to become the world's dominant launch provider. Driven by Musk's ambition to make humanity multiplanetary, it is now Nasa's sole means of sending astronauts to the ISS—a symbol of post-Cold War cooperation and a testbed for deeper space missions. Space monopoly? The company has completed 10 regular crew rotations to the orbiting lab and is contracted for four more, under a deal worth nearly US$5 billion. That's just part of a broader portfolio that includes US$4 billion from Nasa for developing Starship, the next-generation megarocket; nearly US$6 billion from the Space Force for launch services; and a reported US$1.8 billion for Starshield, a classified spy satellite network. Nasa had hoped Boeing's Starliner would provide redundancy, but persistent delays—and a failed crewed test last year—have kept it grounded. Even Northrop Grumman's cargo missions now rely on SpaceX's Falcon 9, the workhorse of its rocket fleet. The situation also casts a shadow over Nasa's Artemis programme. A lunar lander variant of Starship is slated for Artemis III and IV, the next US crewed Moon missions. 'It's such a doomsday scenario for both parties that it's hard to envision how US space efforts would fill the gap,' Clayton Swope, deputy director of the Aerospace Security Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told AFP. 'Both sides have every reason to bridge the disagreement and get back to business.' Signs of a rift emerged last weekend, when the White House abruptly withdrew its nomination of e-payments billionaire Jared Isaacman — a close Musk ally who has twice flown to space with SpaceX — as Nasa administrator. On a recent podcast, Isaacman said he believed he was dropped because 'some people had some axes to grind, and I was a good, visible target.' The broader episode could also reignite debate over Washington's reliance on commercial partners, particularly when one company holds such a dominant position. Swope noted that while the US government has long favored buying services from industry, military leaders tend to prefer owning the systems they depend on. 'This is just another data point that might bolster the case for why it can be risky,' he said.
