SGPC team to meet Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, seminary adamant

Time of India3 days ago

Amritsar: Damdami Taksal, Chowk Mehta, is sticking to its stance of not letting the officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, to deliver a message on the 41st Operation Bluestar anniversary on June 6, despite the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) announcing a meeting with the Sikh seminary's chief, Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, on June 2.
"We welcome the SGPC's delegation to meet and discuss, but we stand by our decision of preventing Giani Gargaj from delivering the message to the quom on Ghallughara Diwas on June 6," Avtar Singh Buttar, a senior sewadar of Damdami Taksal, said on Sunday.
A day after Damdami Taksal asked SGPC to stop Gargaj from delivering the message from the rostrum of Akal Takht, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said he would lead a delegation to meet Baba Harnam Singh on June 2 to prevent any kind of confrontation during the event.
Dhami conceded he was concerned about the situation, but expressed confidence in finding a solution. The taksal's objection centres on the legitimacy of Gargaj's appointment and authority as the officiating jathedar of the Akal Takht.
After taksal's warning and before the SGPC's decision to send a delegation to meet Dhumma, Gargaj, in a release issued from the Akal Takht secretariat, appealed to the Sikh community to commemorate the 'Shaheedi Hafta (martyrdom week)' of June 1984 event with the spirit of "panthic" (Sikh community) unity and pay homage to those killed during Operation Bluestar.
Avtar Singh Buttar said the SGPC could consider asking another Sikh religious leader, such as one of the other high priests, a head granthi, or a widely respected Sikh personality, to deliver the message instead. He said Damdami Taksal remained firm in its decision. If Gargaj delivers the address from the Akal Takht rostrum on June 6, the taksal, along with the entire Sant Samaj, various Sikh sects, Sikh federations, Nihang Singh organisations, and the broader Sikh Panth, will strongly oppose the move, he added.

Security heightened at Golden Temple ahead of Operation Bluestar anniversary

Amritsar: Both the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the police have made adequate security arrangements in and around the Golden Temple to prevent any untoward incidents in view of the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar—an Army operation carried out to flush out militants from the Golden Temple complex. Sources said that as in previous years, intelligence inputs are being gathered to prevent any clandestine activities. A good number of police personnel in plainclothes will be deployed inside the Golden Temple complex. Police officials have also been holding meetings with Sikh groups and organisations that issued statements opposing Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj delivering a message to the community from the platform of Akal Takht during an event marking the anniversary on June 6. Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, manager, Golden Temple, said that all necessary and essential security arrangements have been put in place throughout the complex. He also appealed to the sangat (community) to cooperate with the SGPC in maintaining a peaceful and respectful environment. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said that for the past two days, security and law and order arrangements have been actively enforced. In the meantime, the SGPC began an akhand path (uninterrupted recitation of Guru Granth Sahib) at Akal Takht to mark the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar. The bhog of akhand path will be performed on June 6. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and others were present at the beginning of the akhand path on Wednesday. Dhami said that the brutal actions carried out by the then govt in June 1984 inflicted deep wounds upon the Sikh community — wounds that can never be forgotten. BOX Nihangs to oppose Gargaj address The heads of various Nihang Singh organisations held a meeting and opined that Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj was not acceptable to the Panth, so it will not be appropriate for him to deliver the message to the community on June 6 on "Ghallughara Diwas" (Operation Bulestar anniversary). They said that for the restoration of proper "maryada" (Sikh code of religious conduct), all sects, Damdami Taksal, saintly figures, and Panthic organisations are united on their decision. Jathedar Baba Balbir Singh, chief of Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal, said that Gargaj was not appointed as jathedar according to Panthic maryada, so he has no authority to directly intervene in Panthic matters. Stating that every effort should be made to avoid any confrontation on June 6, Baba Balbir said SGPC should introspect on its decisions and must not repeatedly make decisions that go against Sikh sentiments. Nothing will happen: Gargaj Amritsar: "Nothing will happen." This was how Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, responded when asked about the strong objections raised by Sikh organisations, including Damdami Taksal, to his expected address to the community on June 6. "I am 200% sure that this year's Ghallughara programme will be even more peaceful than previous years," he said, adding, "Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, the chief of Damdami Taksal, Chowk Mehta, and leaders of other Sikh organisations are all Gurubhai (brothers in faith). The Taksal's former head, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, attained martyrdom here. It is unthinkable that they would create any disturbance." He emphasised that while differences may exist, "such divisions disappear when Sikhs come together in the Gurughar (house of the Guru)". MSID:: 121624134 413 |

Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal camps in city for charging up party workers for the Ludhiana West bypoll.

Ludhiana: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has turned the Ludhiana West assembly byelection into a make-or-break campaign, with party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal leading the charge from the frontlines. In an unprecedented move, Badal has been camping in the city for days and is expected to remain for the entire duration of the campaign — a level of personal involvement that party insiders say they haven't seen in any local bypoll before. Internally, they view this byelection as a precursor to the 2027 Punjab assembly polls, with senior leadership treating it as both a symbolic and strategic battleground. Party sources claim that Badal has been conducting intensive indoor meetings with booth-level workers and senior members, energising the grassroots and sharpening the party's focus ward by ward. Personal Push, Party Strategy The SAD has fielded first-time candidate Parupkar Singh Ghuman, a Sikh face, in a constituency where an estimated 45,000 Sikh voters reside. In contrast, rival parties have chosen Hindu candidates, which SAD believes gives it an opening to consolidate a core vote bank. "We are charging up our cadre booth-wise and aiming to increase vote share in every ward," a senior party leader said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo "This bypoll is not just about a seat — it's about momentum, visibility, and organisational strength going into 2027. " Party workers and bigwigs from outside the constituency have also been drafted into the effort. "I've been assigned two wards and given 10 days to cover those. We've begun a door-to-door campaign," said a member from the north constituency. "Even if leaders are coming out just because of Sukhbir Badal 's presence, it matters — the party is now visible and active on the ground." 'Nothing to Lose, All to Gain' An Akali leader who asked not to be named said Badal's intense involvement was reminiscent of his commitment to his home turf of Bathinda. "We haven't seen him this engaged elsewhere. It's pushing everyone to step up. We may have little to lose in this bypoll, but there's a lot to gain in terms of morale and groundwork for the next big election." The campaign strategy includes booth-level mobilisation and simultaneous outreach by both party leaders and the candidate himself. While senior members lead coordination efforts, Ghuman is covering ground independently to connect with as many voters as possible. Sukhbir: It's About Pb's Future Speaking to TOI, Sukhbir Singh Badal underscored the wider stakes. "This is a very important election — not just for Ludhiana West, but for the entire state," he said. "The voters here will begin the chapter of defeat for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). As party president, it's my duty to support our candidate and energise the cadre. I'm holding meetings daily, and I'm encouraged to see how committed our workers are to securing victory. " With morale rising and the SAD's top brass embedded on the ground, the bypoll has evolved into more than a mid-term test — it has become the launchpad for the party's return bid in Punjab politics. SGPC tries to persuade Damdami Taksal to withdraw opposition to Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, fails

Amritsar : A two-member delegation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) visited Gurdwara Gurdarshan Parkash, the headquarters of Damdami Taksal in Chowk Mehta, to hold a meeting with the Sikh seminary's officials on Wednesday. No breakthrough was achieved during the talks in which SGPC was hoping to persuade the taksal officials to withdraw their opposition to Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj delivering a message from the Akal Takht rostrum to mark 41 years of Operation Bluestar on June 6. "We went to the headquarters of Damdami Taksal, but we could not meet Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa as he was away attending a religious function. Still, we are hopeful and confident of reaching a peaceful resolution by tomorrow," said Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, an SGPC member who was part of the delegation. This visit followed an earlier unsuccessful meeting held on June 2 between a delegation led by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and Baba Dhumma at Damdami Taksal headquarters. Following the meeting, Dhami said a peaceful solution would be reached ahead of June 6. Maintaining that the appointment of Giani Gargaj was made in violation of Sikh maryada (code of religious conduct), Damdami Taksal and Sikh organisations like Sant Samaj, Sikh federations, Nihang Singh groups and others, have asked SGPC to not let Giani Gargaj deliver the message to quom on June 6. The two sons of slain Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the 14th iconic chief of Damdami Taksal who died during Operation Bluestar, have publicly announced they will not receive a siropa (robe of honour) from Giani Gargaj. Sources said Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa remained firm on his stance, while efforts were underway to find a middle ground to prevent any confrontation or untoward incident on June 6.
