Grand Strand Uber drivers concerned over lower rates ahead of Myrtle Beach Classic
Myrtle Beach Uber drivers say big events like the Myrtle Beach Classic were events they once banked on making a substantial profit.
But now, those drivers say that since the upfront pricing feature started, their overall profitability has decreased to an alarming rate.
'So many people have done Uber in the past and then they stop doing it, start doing it, then stop,' Pedro Irigoyen said. 'It's because they see that throughout the years, it's always been . . . end up paying you a little bit less, a little bit less, a little bit less.'
Drivers who have Ubered for eight years say the new upfront pricing shows the estimated fare drivers would be making during a given ride — which now shows them shocking amounts less.
'When Uber started in this area, we can make up to $1,000 in a weekend, three or four days,' Irigoyen said. 'But now, to get to those amounts, to get to make $1,000, you got to maximize your hours and drive like seven or eight days straight. It's not stable enough for me because I have a family. I have kids I have to provide for.'
Gordon Mooneyhan, a full-time Uber driver, says the new changes may make him switch to a new rideshare experience completely.
'I've found a new one called WRIDEZ, and it looks to be a lot better because the driver gets 100% of the fare,' he said.
Irigoyen said another problem is not receiving requests for rides in the area he's near, creating potentially unsafe situations for customers and unprofitable situations for drivers.
'You've got somebody who has been drinking. Now you're going to make them wait 20 minutes to get picked up?' he said. 'They're going to be much more tempted to get in their car and drive drunk. Most of the time we either have to decline it and not take that trip because this will put us financially in the negative. It's getting to a point where I might stop.'
Both Irigoyen and Mooneyhan say due to recent changes in upfront pricing, their profit has been cut nearly 40 to 50%, making them unsure if this year's Myrtle Beach Classic will be worth doing Uber for because of the changes.

Atlanta's robotaxi fans spark a quirky Uber trend
Waymo partnered with Uber a couple of months ago to offer robotaxi rides in Atlanta, with the autonomous-car company reportedly deploying dozens of fully driverless vehicles for paying passengers in the city. But while Waymo offers its service in other locations via its Waymo One app, in Atlanta it's currently only offering robotaxi rides via the Uber ride-hailing app. And that's led to a quirky new habit among some riders. Recommended Videos As reported by Business Insider (BI), those keen to hop in a Waymo robotaxi are now in the habit of canceling human drivers on the app until it serves up a robotaxi. One rider said he even spent a whole hour rejecting rides until he was able to secure a Waymo robotaxi, adding that on average he has to reject around 20 human drivers on Uber before he can get a Waymo car to collect him. And that was despite setting an option in the Uber app that lets it know you prefer to ride in an autonomous taxi. 'These driverless vehicles seem to be amassing a contingent of enthusiasts who prefer them over human drivers,' BI said in its report. Another robotaxi fan who's in the habit of canceling Uber drivers until he gets a Waymo pickup said that he's started to notice the kinds of rides that Waymo seems to go for. For example, they'll cost under $12 and won't require heading to a freeway. An Uber spokesperson confirmed this with BI, saying that riders can increase the likelihood of getting a Waymo car by avoiding trips that would ordinarily involve hitting a freeway, riding outside busy times like evenings and weekends, and ensuring the ride is within the 65-square-mile Atlanta service area currently applied to Waymo's autonomous taxi trips. Canceling human drivers in pursuit of Waymo rides appears to indicate a growing interest and enthusiasm for autonomous rides, though for now at least, the vast majority of Uber rides are still taken care of by living, breathing humans … much to their relief, no doubt.

Uber (UBER) and WeRide Broaden Robotaxi Operations in Abu Dhabi Islands
Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:UBER) is one of the top stocks sold by hedge funds. On July 29, WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ:WRD) and Uber announced the strategic expansion of their autonomous taxi service to include Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with the Integrated Transport Centre. The expansion strategically covers nearly half of Abu Dhabi's primary urban zones, including Al Reem, Al Maryah, Yas, and Saadiyat Islands, as well as major highway routes to Zayed International Airport. The companies estimate that this extension will drive a twofold increase in ride volumes, substantially boosting the utilization of their autonomous taxi service. Copyright: adrianhancu / 123RF Stock Photo Since its launch in Abu Dhabi in December 2024, the robotaxi fleet has undergone a threefold expansion. WeRide and Uber intend to further scale their fleet to add hundreds of autonomous vehicles and plan to provide their services to Khalifa City, Masdar City, and additional central urban areas later in 2025. Passengers in the new zones can access WeRide robotaxis via the Uber and TXAI mobile apps. The companies maintain the largest robotaxi service in the Middle East.
