‘Fansi ghar' row: Panel to summon Kejriwal, Sisodia, former speaker
New Delhi: Stressing there was no 'fansi ghar' (gallows chamber) on Delhi assembly premises, speaker Vijender Gupta Thursday said the matter will be referred to the privileges committee for inquiry. "The committee will summon former CM Arvind Kejriwal , his deputy Manish Sisodia, the then assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel and former deputy speaker Rakhi Birla," he said. Gupta had earlier told the House the structure, which was renovated and inaugurated in 2022 by then CM Kejriwal as a 'fansi ghar', was actually a 'tiffin ghar' as per records. On Wednesday, displaying a 1912 map of the assembly complex, he said there was no documentation or evidence indicating the space was used for executions. The speaker said he gave AAP time to present "concrete facts and documents" in support of their claims of the existence of the execution room, but they failed to do so. "The plaque bearing the names of Kejriwal and Sisodia outside fansi ghar will be removed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo The 1912 map depicting it as a tiffin room will also be displayed," he told the House. Gupta said when the previous Kejriwal govt announced there was an execution room, they revered it as a site of martyrdom. "After three days of discussion, and in the absence of any concrete evidence, documents provided by the National Archives, Indian Council of Historical Research, and IGNCA confirmed that no fansi ghar was ever constructed at the site," he said. "When we were in the opposition, we were led to believe there was an execution room here. We were also emotionally connected to the site," Gupta said. However, after becoming the speaker, he conducted thorough research and discovered that the structure in question was actually a tiffin ghar, which was "deeply upsetting", he added. "History was distorted and they (AAP) played with the feelings of people. This is all deceit. People won't forgive them for this," he said. Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said it was "highly condemnable" that a place where people would have consumed non-vegetarian food was called 'fansi ghar', where freedom fighters attained martyrdom. AAP had earlier accused BJP of trying to shield the British by saying that there was no execution room. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Agriculture key to UP's $1 trn economic vision
Lucknow: Maintaining that farmers remained its top priority, govt said on Thursday that agriculture is playing a pivotal role in transforming UP into a $1 trillion economy. "The state govt is working towards the farmers' uplift. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Govt has undertaken historic initiatives over the eight years under guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," a state govt spokesperson said. UP holds 11% of the country's cultivable land and contributes over 20% to India's total foodgrain production. Govt said that maize was being procured at MSP during rabi season — an unprecedented move that not only benefited farmers but also ended exploitation faced under previous govts. "Today, farmers are earning lakhs through maize cultivation, thanks to fair prices and govt support," he claimed. He said that agricultural scientists moved beyond laboratories to engage with farmers in the field. UP farmers are the biggest beneficiaries of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, one of the world's largest DBT schemes. "So far, 20 instalments totalling over Rs 90,000 crore have been transferred to the accounts of around 2.5 crore farmers in the state. In PM's parliamentary constituency of Varanasi, farmers received approximately Rs 900 crore under this scheme. " he said. Before 2017, the farmers' plight in UP was dire—many were driven to suicide and sugarcane farmers were struggling to receive dues. "Procurement centres for maize, oilseeds, pulses, potatoes, millets, sorghum, paddy and wheat lacked proper management," the spokesperson said. One of the Yogi govt's first major decisions in 2017 was to waive Rs 36,000 crore in farm loans, benefitting 86 lakh farmers. To strengthen irrigation infrastructure, govt leveraged the PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana, through which an additional 23 lakh hectares has been brought under irrigation. Besides, 15 lakh private tubewells were provided free electricity, with the govt allocating Rs 2,700 crore annually to the power department to ensure uninterrupted supply to farmers.
