Phoenix Suns Have Devin Booker Trade Verdict Amid Kevin Durant Drama

Yahoo23-05-2025

This past season was one that Phoenix Suns fans will never forget, for all of the wrong reasons.
They missed out on even a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament a year after being swept out of the playoffs in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It looked as though the Suns were ready to make one last push toward one of those play-in spots, but an injury to Durant's ankle put any hopes of that to rest.

Around the trade deadline, it was rumored that the Suns were shopping Durant and that a deal was nearly in place that would've sent him to Golden State.
According to NBA Insider Marc Stein, while the Suns will likely continue to shop Durant, they're unlikely to move Devin Booker when he appeared on the PHNX Suns Podcast.
"I think teams still look at Devin Booker not being available,' Stein said. 'I think the Suns and Devin Booker have both made it pretty clear they want to carry on together. So, I think—now, look—will a team or two or three test that resolve? Probably. I mean, teams love to make those calls even after the Suns might say [no]….

The Suns just installed Brian Gregory as the new general manager, with former general manager James Jones moving into a senior advisory position.
Gregory has a close relationship with owner Mat Ishbia. Gregory was an assistant coach at Michigan State during the 2000 National Championship with Ishbia.
Durant would be the best way to recoup assets they sent out to acquire him and Bradley Beal over the past few seasons.

Phoenix Suns aggressively trying to trade Kevin Durant to Houston Rockets

It's no secret that the Phoenix Suns are trying to trade Kevin Durant this offseason. One of the greatest scorers of all time, Durant has enjoyed a very accomplished career that includes an NBA championship, an MVP, 15 All-Star appearances, 11 All-NBA selections, and four scoring titles. Set to turn 37 in September, Durant should still have some strong value via trade. After all, he still averaged 26.6 points per game while shooting 43% from distance. That type of skillset fits any offense, yet the Suns are reportedly trying to negotiate with a specific team. Advertisement According to The Athletic's Kelly Iko, the Suns have been trying to trade Durant to the Houston Rockets in an effort to get their draft picks back. Remember, Houston is in possession of Phoenix's first-round picks in 2025, 2027, and 2029, stemming from the initial Durant trade to the Nets, who then traded those selections to the Rockets later on. 'Phoenix is aggressive in pursuit of a) trading Kevin Durant and b) regaining full control of their draft capital starting with the No. 10 pick in next month's draft, team sources said. Since the conclusion of the season, Houston has fielded several calls from Phoenix, who have since gradually lowered their asking price for Durant, those sources said. There is a price where the Rockets would be interested, but with a fear of breaking up their roster for a 36-year-old coming off injury, doubt remains over a deal materializing.' The Athletic's Kelly Iko on Rockets/Durant trade The fact that Phoenix continues to lower its asking price for Durant is a strong indication that they're desperate to move off from the final year of his contract, where he's set to earn $54.7 million. Durant landing in Houston would at least send him to another contender, but are the Rockets looking to break up their young core for an aging superstar? Yet, it's also possible the Suns are just trying to get the draft picks from Houston, but still send Durant to another city. Either way, it's clear the Suns are looking to deal. Naz Reid Sees Himself As A Starter, Remains Open To Returning To Wolves As Rotation Player

Naz Reid Sees Himself As A Starter, Remains Open To Returning To Wolves As Rotation Player originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Naz Reid has been one of the most widely discussed players heading into the offseason. Owing to his pending decision to test free agency, Reid shared his thoughts on his role going forward while speaking with the media. Advertisement When asked whether he would consider embracing a bench role with the Minnesota Timberwolves next season and whether it was right for him, he said: "It could be. I'm not completely ruling it out. There will be a lot to think about." This question was followed up by another regarding whether the forward viewed himself as a starter. Reid responded by saying, "Yes, 100 percent. 100 percent. But sometimes, if you want to be in a winning position, sometimes you might have to sacrifice. I definitely view myself as a starter. But things happen, things change. You never know what's ahead of you till you talk about it or go through with it." Reid's answer could be considered ambiguous to some extent. However, after another disappointing loss in the Western Conference Finals, the forward will have a lot to think about heading into the offseason. Advertisement The Wolves looked completely outmatched in the WCF against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Although they managed to record a dominant performance to secure a win at home in Game 3, Minnesota looked completely washed out after a 94-124 loss in Game 5 sent them home. The Wolves forward was one of the primary culprits in the loss in Game 5. Reid has established himself as one of the best bench players coming into the postseason. After a dominant series of outings against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round, the 25-year-old should have been the key element in dismantling the Thunder in this matchup. Unfortunately, Reid struggled to get going, notching only 11 points and five rebounds in Game 5. This, when paired with other poor performances in the starting unit, exacerbated the Wolves' elimination from the playoffs. Reid saw a drastic dropoff in output in the playoffs. While averaging a solid 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in the regular season, the forward saw his numbers decline to 10.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Advertisement This will be a cause for concern as the 25-year-old seeks a new contract in free agency. Reid has garnered the attention of several teams in free agency, the Pistons and the Lakers being among them. However, this decline in performance may raise some questions regarding his ability to perform in the playoffs. In addition to this, a recent scandal involving Reid, wherein leaked chats revealed the forward using slurs to insult a fan and revealing sensitive contract information, may cause more problems to his image. With the situation slipping away from control, the forward would be best advised to mend things before making any moves in free agency. Chris Finch Hints Anthony Edwards Needs To Learn From Shai Gilgeous-Alexander How To Draw More Fouls

Chris Finch Hints Anthony Edwards Needs To Learn From Shai Gilgeous-Alexander How To Draw More Fouls originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Oklahoma City Thunder dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 by 30 points (124-94) as they proceeded to the NBA Finals after beating them 4-1 in the series. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while averaging 10.2 free throw attempts per game in this series, won the Magic Johnson Western Conference Finals MVP Award. Advertisement His free-throw shooting has come under scrutiny after the NBA world was baffled by his ability to draw fouls and get to the free-throw line. Following the Timberwolves' embarrassing exit from the Playoffs, their head coach, Chris Finch, spoke to the media about Anthony Edwards' developmental arc and the lessons he needs to learn from this experience in the Playoffs. 'I think for areas of improvement for him is just going to be along I think the game route, really. I think he's got to also kind of figure out a bit of a closing package, and we have to help him there. You know what shots and places on the floor can he repeatedly get to." He also spoke about how Edwards needs to learn how to draw more fouls, seemingly as a subtle shot at the reigning MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander. 'Foul drawing. I think you see right now in the league, like you know, you see what gets rewarded, and you know you need to kind of lean into that a little bit. Even though it's not necessarily how he likes to play but it seems to be effective, so I think it's a little bit more about a kind of grey matter than it is any kind of you know, of course, adding some skill is always important.' Advertisement In comparison, Edwards averaged 6.3 free-throw attempts per game in the regular season, as opposed to Gilgeous-Alexander's 8.8 attempts. They approximately maintained similar averages in the postseason. Two years ago, in 2022-23, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 10.9 free-throw attempts per game, nearly twice of Edwards' attempts per game. Once Gilgeous-Alexander took this leap from averaging seven free throws a game to over nine, his scoring jumped from mid-20s to consistently 30 points per game. If Edwards figures out how to draw fouls like Gilgeous-Alexander, his offensive skill set will become several times more lethal, and the Timberwolves could break their Western Conference Finals curse (losing two years in a row) next season to become genuine title contenders. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Ends Anthony Edwards' Dream Playoff Run Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves to one of their strongest Playoff starts in recent history. They ended both their Playoff series in five games while beating teams with the likes of LeBron James (Lakers) and Stephen Curry (Warriors), players whom Edwards grew up watching. Advertisement Therefore, the Timberwolves were widely the favorites to win this series, seeing Edwards and Randle's momentum. They also made it to the Western Conference Finals last season but fell short to the Mavericks. So, experts and legends like Magic Johnson favored them to win due to their experience at this stage. However, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder had other plans. Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 5.2 rebounds in this five-game series to end the Timberwolves' championship ambitions.
