Ghana Coach Anticipates Tough WAFCON Semi-Final Against Morocco

Morocco World21-07-2025
Rabat – Ghana head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren is expecting a tough semi-final WAFCON match against Morocco.
Morocco secured a win in the semifinals last Friday after a 3-1 win against Mali, while Ghana defeated Algeria on penalties on Saturday to clinch a ticket for the semi-finals.
He said the players 'need physical and mental recovery,' noting that his play has only a few days for recovery before the game against Morocco.
'I wish we had one or two more days, but this is football. We need mental recovery, and as for the players, they may need even more physical recovery,' he said.
This indicator could be an opportunity for the Atlas Lionesses, who finished their game on Friday and enjoyed a couple of days of rest and training after their win against Mali.
Morocco will play its match against Ghana at Rabat's Olympic Stadium on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Moroccan time.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) described the game between Ghana and Morocco as a high-stakes semifinal.
'Three years ago, Morocco reached the final on home soil, reigniting national pride in women's football,' CAF said.
The confederation emphasized that now, in 2026, the Atlas Lionesses have matured and are stronger and more composed.
'With a packed Olympic Stadium behind them, Jorge Vilda's side has shown newfound maturity,' CAF wrote. Tags: Algeria WAFCONmorocco wafcon

Lawyer Says ‘Strong Evidence' Clears Hakimi as Mbappé Stands by Him in Rape Case

Rabat – Achraf Hakimi's lawyer, Fanny Colin, says there is 'strong evidence' that clears the Moroccan football star of any wrongdoing, as French prosecutors officially requested a rape trial against him. 'We will fight until the end to make sure the truth comes out and that it is clearly said and understood that Achraf Hakimi did not do or say anything wrong,' Colin told RMC Sport. She added that the accusations are based on a version of events that she considers 'incoherent' and lacking any signs of trauma usually seen in similar cases. The case dates back to February 2023, when a 24-year-old woman accused Hakimi of forcing her into a non-consensual sexual act at his home near Paris. The public prosecutor's office in Nanterre asked on Friday for the 26-year-old to be tried by a criminal court. Hakimi has firmly denied the allegations since the beginning of the investigation. Now, the decision lies with the investigating judge, who will determine whether the case will go to trial. If convicted, Hakimi could face up to 15 years in prison. His lawyer also questioned the woman's story, calling it inconsistent. 'In 99.9% of sexual assault cases, there is at least some sign of trauma, whether it's nightmares, weight changes, or anything else. Here, there is nothing,' she argued. Colin added that she remains calm even if a trial happens, saying the truth will come out. 'Never seen him behave inappropriately' The alleged incident happened on February 25, 2023, one day before a big PSG match that Hakimi missed. The woman says she met the footballer through Instagram and was driven to his house in a car ordered by him. She claims he kissed her and touched her without consent, even after she told him no. She says she managed to push him away and called a friend to pick her up. French football star Kylian Mbappé, who was a close teammate of Hakimi at Paris Saint-Germain, also gave a statement to the police. He defended his friend, saying, 'Achraf Hakimi is respectful toward women. Even when drinking, I've never seen him behave inappropriately.' He added that he had never heard of any women saying Hakimi had crossed the line. Mbappé also talked about the night Hakimi found out about the investigation, saying he cried and was emotionally shaken. Mbappé supported the idea that the case might be a setup, pointing to messages from the woman that suggest a plan to get money from Hakimi. In one text, the woman reportedly wrote, 'We're going to rob him!' although she later said it was just a joke to relieve stress. The case has resurfaced at a sensitive time for Hakimi, who is said to be gaining international support for his performance on the field and is reportedly being considered in the race for the Ballon d'Or. Some fans and commentators now question whether the renewed focus on the case is part of a campaign against him just as he is reaching new career heights. Tags: Achraf Hakimirapetrial

CHAN 2024: Tanzania vs Burkina Faso – Match Preview & Predicted Score

Tanzania will open the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a Group B fixture against Burkina Faso today. Kick-off is at 06:00 pm Moroccan time (GMT+1) at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, and fans can catch the action live on beIN Sports and SuperSport. This year marks the first time Tanzania is hosting CHAN, co-organising the tournament with Kenya and Uganda. The competition, featuring national teams made up of domestic-based players, runs until 30 August. Neither side has won the title since the competition began in 2009. Tanzania hold the upper hand in past encounters, having beaten Burkina Faso in all three previous meetings. The Taifa Stars will look to capitalise on home advantage and a strong support base. Head coach Hemed Suleiman has put his squad through an intensive training programme ahead of the opening match. Preparations in Dar es Salaam are complete, with stadium upgrades and public viewing zones set up across major cities. Supporters from the country's two biggest clubs – Simba and Young Africans – have taken the lead in rallying behind the national team. Organisers have also launched a tourism campaign, 'Tinga CHAN, Tinga Tanzania', aiming to use the tournament to promote the country's major attractions, including Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and the Serengeti. Prediction: With the crowd behind them and a superior head-to-head record, Tanzania are slight favourites. A narrow 2-1 win for the hosts looks likely. Tags: Burkina FasoCHANTanzania

Achraf Hakimi could face trial in France over rape allegation

The public prosecutor in Nanterre, France, has requested that Moroccan international and Paris Saint-Germain player Achraf Hakimi be referred to the criminal court in the Hauts-de-Seine department to stand trial on charges of rape, allegations the player has vehemently denied since the beginning of the investigation. The final decision now lies with the investigating judge, who will determine whether to uphold the indictment issued on August 1. If Hakimi is sent to trial and found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in prison, according to Le Parisien. The case stems from events on the night of February 25, 2023, when a 24-year-old woman reported having met Hakimi through private Instagram messages. After over a month of exchanging messages, she accepted his invitation to visit his home in Boulogne-Billancourt, arriving via an Uber he had arranged. According to her account, Hakimi kissed her and touched her over her clothing despite her explicit refusals, and then continued until he allegedly forced her into «a sexual act against her will». She said she eventually managed to push him away with her foot and left the house, later texting a friend for help. That friend confirmed to police that the young woman appeared to be in shock and that her story seemed consistent. Although she went to a police station in Paris that same day, she did not file a formal complaint at the time. During the preliminary investigation later opened by the Nanterre prosecutor's office, she submitted messages sent to friends that reportedly reflected her psychological distress following the incident. On March 3, 2023, Hakimi was charged with rape by the investigating judge. He was placed under judicial supervision as a formal investigation was launched but was not held in custody. Throughout all proceedings, the Moroccan footballer has denied committing any forced or non-consensual sexual act. A direct confrontation between Hakimi and the complainant took place before the investigating judge on December 8, 2023. The woman maintained her accusations, while Hakimi reiterated his firm denial. Paris Saint-Germain chose to support their player, citing confidence in the judicial process and stating that his absence from training at the time was due to personal reasons. During the investigation, Hakimi claimed that the complainant had orchestrated a «premeditated setup» in an attempt to extort money from him, a claim she categorically denied. Hakimi repeated this allegation in an interview in January 2025, according to the same source.
