‘In James Gunn we trust': ‘Superman' behind-the-scenes footage shows off Metamorpho and Hawkgirl
A new behind-the-scenes look at the film (watch above) released on Superman Day on April 18 — the 87th anniversary of the publication of the Man of Steel's debut in Action Comics No. 1 — makes a compelling case for being excited for Superman, which premieres this summer.

In the clip, writer-director Gunn, producer Safran, and cast members including David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern) discuss the making of the film, and what it means for truth, justice, and the American way.
Gunn talks about trying to crack the story for years before finding a way into the character that resonated with him. "This character is noble, and he's beautiful," Gunn says, over footage of a camera on a massive jib swooping down to shoot Corenswet as he lays in the snow at the start of the scene that premiered at CinemaCon, where Krypto the Super Dog rescues Superman and drags him to the Fortress of Solitude.
"We love the opportunity to play with the incredible library of DC characters and stories, and we really want to do justice for them," Safran says, over of the clearest looks at Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) released to date.

There's some very cool footage of Lois Lane and Perry White (Wendell Pierce) walking through the office of the Daily Planet and other action scenes on real locations with real practical effects, not just on an empty soundstage that will be filled in with CGI (though there is some of that, to be sure). There's also a fun moment where Corenswet, in costume as Superman, explains to Lex Luthor portrayer Nicholas Hoult how Superman wears his trunks on the outside of his pants. "It's liberating," he jokes.
Gunn and the actors then talk about how this version of Superman is full of hope and heart and goodness. "He saves people because it's the right thing to do," Brosnahan says. "We could use a little bit more of that."
"This is the beginning of the future," says Edi Gathegi, who plays Mr. Terrific.
"They are launching a new era, right now," adds Fillion.
"In James Gunn we trust, and I think we can do it," Brosnahan says.
Warner Bros. is putting a lot of trust in Gunn, who previously made the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel and is creatively in charge of the whole DC slate. Superman will be followed by a number of other DC movies and shows, with movies Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface and TV series Lanterns in production for 2026 release dates.
If nothing else, the behind the scenes featurette gives a sense of the scale of Superman's production and how confident the filmmakers are in it.
Superman opens in theaters on July 11.

Its guns are still blazing. 'Weapons' remained No. 1 at the box office Friday, its second in theaters, taking in $7.4 million, according to The Numbers. The horror-mystery is slated to enjoy a domestic total of up to $90 million through Sunday, which would make it the 14th-highest-earning North American release of the year, as per Variety. 3 'Weapons' remained No. 1 at the box office on Friday, its second in theaters, taking in $7.4 million. ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection 'Freakier Friday,' the highly-anticipated sequel to 2003's 'Freaky Friday' remained in the second spot, with sales of $4.5 million. Its director, Nisha Ganatra, has already spoken about the possibility of a third film. 'Freakiest Friday… What would it be? I mean, more swaps, right? Probably a six-way swap,' Ganatra told Screen Rant. The action comedy 'Nobody 2' took third, with a $3.86 million take on Friday, its opener. James Gunn Says He's Shooting the ‘Superman' Sequel ‘Much Sooner Rather Than Later': ‘We're Scheduling it Now'
James Gunn is giving an update on his 'Superman' sequel. During a recent interview with Collider, Gunn said he has completed the treatment for his 'Superman' follow-up and that he and his team are currently scheduling production. 'I'm totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They're not regular treatments. They're 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I'm just turning that into a script. We're planning out when we're going to shoot that. It's going to be much sooner rather than later.' Gunn recently revealed across various interviews during his 'Superman' press tour that he is writing a new film featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, although he remained vague whether it was a standalone sequel or an entirely new project. Other upcoming projects on the DC slate include 'Peacemaker' Season 2, 'Supergirl,' the 'Lanterns' TV series, 'Wonder Woman' and 'Clayface.' Gunn said during a recent interview with CBS Mornings that all projects under the DC umbrella will have their own unique tone and style, much like the comics they are based on. ''Clayface' is a totally different thing. Although it's in the same universe, it's a complete horror film, and that's one of the things we want to do,' Gunn explained. 'There's not a company style. It's not like every movie is gonna be like 'Superman.' The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. … We don't want people being bored.' After James Gunn ‘Just' Confirmed A Superman Sequel, Stans Have A Lot Of Thoughts
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The comic book genre continues to be wildly popular, with a number of shared universes competing at the box office. DC co-CEO James Gunn has been crafting the DCU, with the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters. And after the filmmaker seemingly confirmed a sequel to Superman was coming, fans have thoughts. Superman was the first big-screen installment of the DCU (which also has projects streaming with an HBO Max subscription). The blockbuster has performed quite well, leading fans to wonder about upcoming DC movies. Gunn was recently asked on Threads about what he's doing now that the movie is out, and he responded with: Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!! Talk about a thrilling update. While Superman makes money at the box office, it sounds like he's already noodling up ideas for where to continue the story. This should probably not be a huge surprise, given the wild pace of Gunn's work since starting his position at DC. Of course, there is still some confusion about exactly what he's teasing. HBO Max: Plans start from $9.99 a monthHBO Max is the streaming home for all things DC. Pay $9.99 a month for its With Ads plan, with three tiers available for an HBO Max subscription. You can also prepay for a year and save up to 20%.View Deal This Threads post has gotten a ton of engagement online, especially since the filmmaker has a reputation for directly communicating with the fans. When one person asked when he was going to tease the sequel, Gunn responded, "I JUST DID!". While there is no true confirmation, the fact that he's planning on getting into writing mode soon is thrilling. Even if he'll also be busy promoting Peacemaker Season 2. Fans are sounding off about this mini tease online, including a thread on Reddit. Folks are offering their two cents on Gunn's social presence, as well as what they'd like to see in a follow-up to Superman. I love he casually just said announced he's working on a sequel. Very glad to see an actual sequel being made after all the past cancellations from the other Superman's is the funniest exchange I'll see all day. James Gunn is living his best life out there as a CEO. I think it's obvious it was getting a sequel and Superman is almost guaranteed to show up in other DCU movies Crossing my fingers for Brainiac to be the next villain, it's about time a Superman (live action) movie includes other villains besides Lex Luthor and General Zod. Since the DCU is still in its early stages, this level of discourse might be a positive sign regarding how the public is feeling about the burgeoning franchise. The previous DC universe had a number of missteps, with Aquaman 2 being the final installment. But it looks like James Gunn and the Superman cast managed to largely win over the hearts of moviegoers. Of course, the biggest question online is whether or not it'll be a direct sequel to Superman, or another way to expand the universe and use the same characters. Namely because Gunn also shared: Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It's not 'Superman 2.' As such, the online discourse is likely going to continue until we know more about what James Gunn is planning in the wake of Superman. But per this clarification, it seems like we're going to see more of an ensemble film with Superman being part of it. Could the Justice League be coming together? The group was still forming in the last DC flick. There is a ton of world-building being done by DC right now, on both the small and silver screens. Superman featured other heroes as well as characters who will become major presences down the line, such as Maxwell Lord and Supergirl. James Gunn is the architect of this franchise and is also involved as a writer/director. Now the question is: what's going to happen in a Superman sequel? Superman is in theaters now as part of the 2025 movie release list, and the DCU will expand again when Peacemaker Season 2 arrives on HBO Max August 21st.
