Sane farewell: Five Bayern years but no magic Robben moment

Leroy Sané bids farewell to Bayern Munich after five years in which he inherited the number 10 shirt from Arjen Robben but never managed to be as decisive and ultimately adored as the Dutchman.
Former Schalke player Sané arrived in 2020 for ?50 million from Manchester City where the winger played together with now Bayern coach Vincent Kompany under Pep Guardiola.
Kompany revealed that that Sané 'sat on the pitch for a very long time' after his final Bayern training session on Saturday before becoming a Galatasaray player in Istanbul from Tuesday onwards.
Whether Sané will play one last time for Bayern later Sunday in the Club World Cup last 16 match against Brazil's Flamengo remains to be seen.
There were some raised eyebrows that Sané was taken along to the tournament in the United States at all, and the critics seemed to be proven right when he wasted several top chances in his only notable appearance there, the 1-0 group defeat against Benfica.
The gifted Sané has often been considered unfulfilled and never reached the status of Robben, who after some struggles became a fan favourite together with Franck Ribery, and scored Bayern's winner in the 2013 Champions League final.
But Sané was a popular figure in the dressing room, and Kompany stressed that he never had the feeling that Sané didn't fully commit to Bayern in the US despite having already signed for Galatasaray.
'I always likes to play with Leroy a lot,' captain Manuel Neuer said.
Newly signed defender Jonathan Tah said: 'I am very sad that I can't play here together with him any longer, but only this tournament.
That's football, that's the way the business is.'

‘Elite remain in Europe': Bayern set up Club World Cup quarters with PSG

Bayern Munich have overcome a determined resistance from Flamengo to book their place in the Club World Cup quarterfinals with an entertaining 4-2 victory in their round of 16 clash. Harry Kane scored twice as the German giants became the latest European team to knock out their South American counterparts from the global cup competition on Sunday, prompting Flamengo coach Filipe Luis to say the football elite 'remain in Europe'. Vincent Kompany's side will now play European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta on Saturday for a place in the last four. Flamengo, backed by a huge and passionate following at Hard Rock Stadium, bowed out of the tournament despite a performance of real determination from Luis's team. Joshua Kimmich opened the scoring for Bayern in the sixth minute, and the score was doubled four minutes later as Kane bagged his first. Bayern looked like they were going to run away with the game but the three-time Copa Libertadores champions were able to find a foothold. Flamengo were rewarded for their efforts in the 33rd minute when after the dangerous Luiz Araujo played the ball in from the left, the ball fell to Gerson who unleashed a thunderbolt which rocketed past Neuer to bring the bulk of the 60,914 crowd to their feet. But all that good work from the Rio team was undone four minutes before the break when Araujo's poor clearance landed straight at the feet of Leon Goretzka who had the time and space to settle himself before, from more than 20 yards out, placing his shot into the corner to make it 3-1. Flamengo came out determined to respond once again and they reduced the deficit again in the 55th minute when Michael Olise handled a cross from Giorgian de Arrascaeta at close range and Jorginho took advantage of the opportunity with an ice-cool conversion. The contest was finally settled in the 73rd minute when Konrad Laimer won the ball in midfield and fed Kimmich who, in turn, slipped the ball through to Kane, who confidently beat Agustin Rossi with one of his trademark precision and power drives. 'European teams have the best Brazilian players' Later, Luis said the football elite remained in Europe as he doffed his cap to Bayern's killer touch. 'It's up to us to simply recognise the superiority of our opponent. They are very good, we knew that. At this level, any mistake is fatal. Those who deserved to go through got through,' he said. 'Our plan did work and we were able to apply pressure and create goal-scoring opportunities, but they were better than us; we're playing against the football elite. If Vinicius Jr had not left for Real Madrid, we would have the best player in the world. 'They [South American players] want to be in the elite and that's what they are, had we won today and the tournament, it would not change the reality – they're high-quality teams. We have many Brazilian players in our teams, but they [the European teams] have the best ones. They have better players – that's a fact.' European teams were expected to dominate the expanded Club World Cup but sometimes struggled in the group phase while all Brazilian teams advanced and made an impression. Bayern, however, restored a measure of what the European football establishment would call 'order' ahead of Inter Milan's clash with Brazil's Fluminense, also in the last 16. Palmeiras progressed by beating fellow Brazilian side Botafogo on Saturday.

Gittens set for Chelsea move after Moukoko also leaves Dortmund

dpa Fort Lauderdale, Florida Winger Jamie Gittens is set to join Chelsea after an agreement in principle has been reached with his current club Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga side confirmed the news on Saturday at their Club World Cup camp in Florida. Gittens, 23, was already on his way to tournament quarters of Chelsea, who were playing a last 16 match against Benfica later in the day in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chelsea had initially aimed to sign Gittens before the start of the Club World Cup but reportedly did not meet Dortmund's demand of an estimated ?65 million ($76 million). The fee the clubs have now agreed upon was not given by Dortmund. Gittens, who did not feature for Dortmund in the US due to illness, is reportedly to receive a contract until 2032 at the Blues. Dortmund had earlier Saturday announced the sale of forward Youssoufa Moukoko to Copenhagen for a reported ?5 million. 'It's not easy to say goodbye to a club like Dortmund, because this club, my team-mates, coaches and the great fans will always mean a lot to me,' Moukoko said. Moukoko joined Dortmund's academy at age 11. In 2020, at the age of 16, he became the youngest player to play a Bundesliga game and score a league goal. Last season, he played at Nice on loan. 'Unfortunately, his development has recently stalled. I'm sure everyone involved would have liked it to be different,' sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.

Qatar interested in hosting ‘carbon-neutral' 2029 Club World Cup: Report

DPA Berlin Qatar is reportedly the latest country interested in hosting the next Club World Cup in 2029, which may then be a tournament in the European winter just like the 2022 World Cup. British paper The Guardian said on Saturday that Qatari officials 'have held talks with FIFA officials at the highest level' during the current edition in the United States and have 'indicated a desire to stage the next edition in four years' time.' The report said that Qatar pledges a carbon-neutral event because of short distances between venues which are to be the same ones used for the World Cup three years ago. The tournament in the US is under criticism over long distances between venues, the heat and storms which have led to several matches stopped, and also pitch conditions. Qatar's summer heat is even more intense which, if chosen, would mean that a Club World Cup there would be played in winter, possibly in December. The World Cup there took place mid-November to mid-December. European clubs may not be happy about another disruption of their season in such a scenario, but the US tournament comes at the end of their season amid player welfare concerns. A winter tournament would also either be just six months ahead of the 2030 World Cup, or if played in December 2028, half a year after Euro 2028 and the Copa America. Qatar are yet to make their interest official, while Spain and Morocco, two of the countries to host the 2030 World Cup, have each declared interest along with Brazil.
