The Minnesota Vikings and quarterback J.J. McCarthy are heading into the 2025 NFL season facing major questions.
After a 2024 season that saw the Vikings finish the year with a 14-3 record and be one of the best teams in the NFL, there are a lot of expectations. McCarthy, who will be heading into his first year as the starting quarterback, will have big shoes to fill.
Last season, Sam Darnold was the starting quarterback in Minnesota. He threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while completing 66.2 percent of his pass attempts.

Despite that fact, the Vikings are full of confidence when it comes to McCarthy.
Minnesota had an opportunity to pursue a one-year deal with Aaron Rodgers. It passed on that chance to stay loyal to McCarthy.
What kind of player should the Vikings expect McCarthy to be? One of his teammates spoke out with a clear message about the second-year signal caller.
During an interview on CBS, running back Aaron Jones opened up about McCarthy.
"He has a strong arm, he's mobile, athletic... he's super athletic," Jones said.
His last meaningful time on the field was with the Michigan Wolverines in college. McCarthy led that team to a national championship win under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh. He's hoping to bring those winnings ways with him to Minnesota.
There is never an easy way to predict what a young quarterback will become in the NFL. McCarthy is a major question mark.

On one hand, he could be the driving force that takes the Vikings to the Super Bowl. Perhaps he can put together a similar or even better season to the one that Darnold had last year. Or, he could end up struggling and Minnesota might take a big step in the wrong direction.
Clearly, the Vikings are all-in on him. They believe in his ability and will get their first look at him when the 2025 NFL season kicks off.
Hopefully, he'll be able to rise to the occasion and put to rest all of the questions that have been surrounding him.

Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. suffers achilles injury in training camp

The Cleveland Browns have suffered a significant blow to their defense, potentially losing starting cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. for the season. The former third round pick and standout over the first two seasons of his career suffered an achilles injury in Tuesday's practice and had to be carted off the practice field. It was described as a non-contact injury as the Browns were not in pads for Tuesday's practice. Without speculating too much until results come in from testing, but these are rarely easy injuries to bounce back from quickly. Emerson is coming off a down 2024 season, looking for a bounce-back year in the Cleveland secondary. To make matters worse, Emerson is in a contract year too, looking to earn his worth with the Browns long-term. Now he will have to enter free agency on the heels of a likely significant injury. The Browns will now likely have to ask Greg Newsome II, who plays outside cornerback on base downs before kicking inside to the slot in nickel looks, to play outside full-time. Newsome II is also in a contract year with the Browns and has the opportunity to return to the type of player we saw from him early in his career. And if he does, he will be in line for a good payday. This means Cameron Mitchell or 2024 seventh round pick Myles Harden will be allowed to slide into the nickel cornerback position this season. The Browns also signed former Miami Dolphins' nickel Nik Needham this offseason, and he'll likely get looks inside as well throughout training camp. Regardless, this is a huge loss for the Browns if Emerson is sidelined for the entirety of the 2025 season. Browns QB Shedeur Sanders continues to quietly impress in training camp

Seven days of Cleveland Browns training camp are officially in the books. The headlines have centered around Martin Emerson's injury, Myles Garrett's dominance, and the four-man quarterback competition. Unsurprisingly, Shedeur Sanders has been the talk of the town, making a strong early impression. Throughout his first week of NFL training camp, Sanders has completed 70% of his passes in team drills, with five touchdowns and no interceptions, according to BetMGM. These stats should be taken with a grain of salt, as he is currently facing the second and third-team defenses. Still, having zero turnovers in his initial opportunities has made a positive impact on his reputation in Berea. Shedeur Sanders has consistently made the most of every opportunity to reinforce his image as a hard-working, dedicated athlete. He's been seen on social media putting in extra reps after practice and arriving early—often before his teammates. Off the field, Sanders has built strong connections with both the community and his teammates by participating in charity events and taking time to engage with fans in Berea after practices. The 'Sanders Circus' that many fans thought would enter Cleveland has been anything but that. The Browns will continue to challenge Sanders as the regular season approaches. He took his first reps against the Browns' first-team defense on Wednesday and is expected to earn more opportunities if he continues to progress. The real test for Sanders is likely to come during the Browns' joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Friday, August 8th, where he will have his first taste of opposing NFL competition. Browns QB Shedeur Sanders gets zero first-team reps due to arm soreness

Even with quarterback Kenny Pickett sidelined with a hamstring injury, the Cleveland Browns did not give Shedeur Sanders a single first-team rep in Saturday's practice. It turns out that was for good reason, however. Sanders did not throw a football outside of warmups in Saturday's training camp session as the team held him out with general arm soreness. This means that Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel were the only two quarterbacks taking reps in the team's scrimmage portions of practice, while Sanders did participate in the run game drills and other non-throwing activities. The rep count and camp stats have been a popular thing to do in training camp, although context is lacking with those. In this regard, there is no playing favorites or withholding of reps from Sanders. In fact, head coach Kevin Stefanski has been high on what Sanders has done in practice to continue to win over the coaching staff. Sanders will have his first real opportunity to do that this coming week as he is likely to get all of the second half snaps against the Carolina Panthers in Cleveland's first preseason game. If Sanders wants to prove to the staff that he deserves first-team reps, doing it live against second and third teamers needs to be automatic. There are still three weeks of training camp left for the Browns to sort through their quarterback situation. Can Sanders prove he deserves more work with the first-team unit?
