Mammootty's illustrious five-decade-long career now part of BA History syllabus at the Kochi college he studied in
According to the report, students of BA History at Maharaja's College will study Mammotty's life, career, and influence on cinema. The chapter Sensing Celluloid: History of Malayalam Cinema explores his life and career in detail. Interestingly, Mammootty is also an alumnus of the college. Mohanlal, Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Madhu, Jayan, Sheela, Sharadha, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Padmarajan are also part of the chapter. The curriculum reportedly also honours regional icons who contributed to Kerala's cultural and social landscape. The syllabus will be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year. Recent work
This year, Mammootty starred in Gautham Vasudev Menon's Malayalam debut, Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, and debut director Deeno Dennis' action film Bazooka. He will soon play Cyanide Mohan in a film he's producing titled Kalamkaval, directed by Jithin K Jose. He also stars in a Mahesh Narayanan-directorial, which also stars Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara. He has yet to announce any other upcoming projects amid a health scare.
Mohanlal prayed for Mammootty's well-being at Sabarimala in March this year, drawing the ire of some Muslim leaders. Mammootty's friend and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas spoke to Reporter TV in June and said, 'Mammootty is suffering from a minor health complication and is currently receiving treatment. He is okay, and I just had a phone conversation with him. Even though we have been friends for quite a long time, we were never the kind of people who talked much about our personal lives. However, in recent days, we have been sharing such details as well.'

Nothing enlivens courtroom dramas than fiery arguments, which open new pathways into our understanding of a case. In Janaki V Vs State of Kerala, celebrated advocate David Abel Donovan (Suresh Gopi)'s arguments are full of fire. Still, a significant portion of them are so irrelevant that they would fit more in a loud television debate than in a courtroom. He is the kind of person who would talk about cheese when he is supposed to argue about chalk. So, it is no wonder that he would go on a long diatribe against the State's developmental projects when he is arguing in court in a case related to sexual assault, or that he would ask a rape victim whether she watches porn and how often. The opening credit sequences of the film hint at this behaviour with news clippings of his various press statements on a host of issues, all of which reveal a lawyer who is more active outside the court than inside. Janaki V Vs State of Kerala, which arrives in theatres with an extra 'V' thanks to the diktats of the censors, is caught between the need to tell a sensitive story and projecting the superhero aura of the actor playing the advocate. Debutant director Praveen Narayanan, who has also written the film, struggles on both counts. One of these ideas, which forms the core of the film, regarding the paternity of a child born out of rape, is probably one of the most outlandish ideas heard in cinema in recent years. It, in a way, trivialises a serious issue, by turning it into an outright political weapon. For a courtroom drama, there is hardly any scene that makes an impact. As if to excite the audience lulled by the sluggish drama, there is an unnecessary jump scare sequence, which seems inspired from a B-grade horror movie. Songs further drag down the narrative. With its insensitive take on an important issue, Janaki V Vs State of Kerala becomes a film as pointless as the letter 'V', which was added to Janaki's name to satisfy the whims of the censors. Starring Malayalam actor and Member of Parliament Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran, the film ran into trouble due to legal issues over its title and censorship controversy The movie finally released in theatres on July 17 after a minor change in its Suresh Gopi-starrer attempts to hold a mirror to the 'system' in Kerala, but presumably resonates with the conditions faced by several citizens across the country. Let's find out!The story revolves around Janaki V (Anupama Parameshwaran), an IT employee working in Bengaluru who gets sexually abused while visiting her hometown for a festival. What is the Indian judicial system standing on? What happened to Janaki? Along with a 'whodunnit' screenplay, the answers to these questions and more form the plot of the film. Director Pravin Narayanan has penned an interesting story, revolving around issues that women still face across the country. From cybercrime, stalking, eve-teasing, to physical assault and abuse, social stigma, and the conversations surrounding abortion – the filmmaker has included all these elements in his story, and on paper has crafted a smartly written legal drama. However, when it comes to screenplay and execution, the director seems to have gotten confused about the kind of film he wanted to make. The film chooses several sub-plots to use as misdirections but ends up developing them to an extent where the sub-plot seems more intriguing, only for them to be dropped abruptly. The inconsistent integration of mass elements, seemingly just to tap into Suresh Gopi's star appeal, feels more like a distraction than an elevation.'Janaki V vs State of Kerala' paves the way for conversations that are important in today's society. But the in-your-face social message, which only receives prominence at the very end of the film without proper setups throughout its runtime, seems forced and ends up being barely effective. Considering all the elements at the director's disposal - the story, theme and Suresh Gopi - an obvious struggle in managing and utilising available resources is Gopi returns to the big screen after a significant gap and brings the same dramatic charm and energy he always has. However, his performance – particularly the dialogue delivery – is on a completely different acting wavelength from the rest of the cast. Carrying a more theatrical approach, the character of Advocate David Abel Donovan often feels out of place and distracting from the film's core Parameshwaran delivers an impressive performance as Janaki V. Effectively communicating her grief, pain, trauma, circumstances, and strength all at once, Anupama becomes the emotional bridge between the audience and the story. The 'Premam' actor carries this weight well. The rest of the cast also deliver strong film, edited by Samjith Mohammed, could have benefited from a crisper cut. Several shots lingered for far too long, affecting the overall pace. While some sequences showcased a creative attempt to convey emotions, none stood out as particularly innovative. Both the cinematography and music followed a traditional approach, with nothing that left a lasting conclusion, 'Janaki V vs State of Kerala' is a film that sets out with noble intentions and a socially relevant premise but falters in execution. While the story is rooted in pressing real-world issues, the film struggles to find a consistent voice.
