Investigation underway after hit-and-run leaves pedestrian injured in Athens
ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — A pedestrian was injured after being hit by a vehicle on Wednesday in Athens.
The Athens Police Department said that officers responded to the area of US Highway 72 west of I-65 for a hit and run collision around 10:25 p.m.
Officers believe that the pedestrian was walking westbound along US Highway 72 and that the vehicle was driving eastbound.
APD said that the vehicle hit the pedestrian and continued driving eastbound, leaving the scene.
Authorities said that the pedestrian is suffering from life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital.
Athens Police said that they believe the vehicle involved is a dark gray 2020-2024 Kia Telluride.

19-year-old charged with reckless murder in Binford Drive shooting, HPD confirms
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Court documents show that a 19-year-old has been charged in a shooting on Binford Drive in May. The Huntsville Police Department confirmed that Jamyah Pitts was arrested for reckless murder for her connection to the Binford Drive Shooting that occurred on May 30. 'The case is still under active investigation, and more charges could be forthcoming,' HPD said. Court records show that she was arrested on June 6. Huntsville Police responded to a report of a shooting in progress in the 200 block of Binford Drive around 4:30 a.m. The shooting left one person dead and another person injured. According to HPD, the second person received non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Tyrek Keshun Norris. During HPD's investigation, officers gathered evidence identifying Pitts in connection to the shooting. They also found that Pitts was still inside an apartment in the 200 block of Binford Drive, police told News 19. Austin Police provides new details into anti-ICE protest
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department held a press conference at noon Tuesday to discuss Monday night's protest and its response. APD Police Chief Lisa Davis discussed 'results from the large gatherings' at the department's headquarters. David said APD worked collaboratively with the Texas Department of Public Safety to facilitate the peaceful protest. Previous: Anti-ICE march held in solidarity with LA protests; Arrests made, DPS uses tear gas The protest began around 7 p.m. Monday at the Texas Capitol. Anti-capitalist group Party for Socialism and Liberation organized the initial march and shared its route with APD ahead of time. APD said the protest moved through the downtown Austin area, where it escalated quickly. Around 8 p.m. Monday, the marchers returned to the Capitol. They broke off into smaller groups over the next hour. David said in the press conference that, through the use of drones, APD and DPS discovered individuals graffitiing the federal building. Two individuals were arrested for spray painting the building's windows, according to Davis. Davis said tensions climbed when large rocks began being thrown towards officers. 3 officers were injured from the rocks, and another suffered a shoulder injury and was spat on in the eye by a protester, according to Davis. The Texas Department of Public Safety was also involved in the law enforcement response to the protest. APD confirmed that it deployed pepper balls toward the ground, and DPS used tear gas to disperse the crowd. City policy implemented after protests in 2020 prohibits APD officers from using tear gas. DPS released the following statement on Tuesday in response. 'The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has a duty to protect the people and property of Texas. On Monday evening, DPS personnel responded to a planned and publicized protest at the Texas State Capitol Complex. While we do not discuss operational specifics, DPS collaborates with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of our citizens and state property, as well as to protect individuals exercising their constitutional rights to assembly and free speech. As with any incident response, the department adjusts its operations, including personnel and resources, as needed to address potential and emerging threats. During Monday evening's response, DPS personnel deployed tear gas and pepper ball projectiles to ensure officer safety and maintain order. DPS personnel arrested four individuals on various charges, including felony criminal mischief and resisting arrest. Texas is a law-and-order state. DPS will continue monitoring future events and their impact on public safety across the state, and we stand ready to protect the people and property of the great state of Texas,' DPS said. According to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, 'more than a dozen' protesters were arrested Monday night. APD said it plans to have 100% staffing ready this weekend in anticipation of any protests. HPD's ‘Summer Slowdown' encourages drivers to hit the brakes, not exceed the limit
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — As summer gets underway, the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is urging all drivers to be more aware and slow down – especially on city streets and in neighborhoods around the city. The Summer Slowdown campaign, which is running from June 9- August 12, is aimed at curbing dangerous driving habits and reducing crashes through a combination of education and enforcement efforts. HPD added that the campaign is also about protecting our youth in the city whether its kids playing outside, or teens getting behind the wheel for the first time. 'This isn't just about traffic enforcement – it's about protecting lives,' Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles said. 'Summer Slowdown is our effort to reduce dangerous driving, increase awareness and keep our community safe every time someone gets behind the wheel.' To combat these trends, HPD will increase patrols and enforcement in high-risk areas and residentials neighborhoods where speeding complaints are common. The department will also share ongoing education and safety reminders through social media and community events to encourage responsible driving habits. 'Enforcement alone won't solve the problem,' Huntsville Police Chief Giles said. 'We must engage with our community to educate drivers on the real risks of speeding – from deadly crashes to the financial and legal consequences they will face.' So far in 2025, Huntsville has seen 12 fatal crashes, with speed playing a primary or contributing role.
