Many medals were won and spots secured in SA championships
Brakpan Boxing Club proved its mettle once again last weekend at the Transnet Engineering boxing ring in Koedoespoort, Pretoria.
The occasion was the cadet and junior championship and development tournament, where five of the club's boxers competed in an event that showcased the club's hard work and commitment to developing top-tier athletes.
De-Han Lubbe and Donewin Martens both won their bouts 3-0, while Kosie Roos claimed victory after his opponent withdrew. Andre Mare lost his match by referee stoppage, and Talitha Roos, despite a loss, earned a silver medal.
Beyond the tournament's success, the club is also celebrating national call-ups. Brakpan boxers have been selected to represent Gauteng at the upcoming South African Championships.
Coach Jaco Visagie will serve as the assistant manager for the Gauteng team, and coach Steven Labuschagne has been appointed one of the team coaches.
JP Visagie secured his place with a gold medal in the 56kg division, Talitha Roos qualified with a silver in the 48kg division, and Donewin Martens added to the honours with a gold in the 76kg division.
Donewin and JP also excelled at the recent Novice Championship, where they earned gold and silver respectively. Brakpan Boxing Club will next host its own tournament on August 23 at the club, located at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre.
The action is set to start at 12:00.

Pretoria medical student wins bronze in the shot-put at the World University Games
Colette Uys won a bronze medal in the shot-put at the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr. There was no time for the Tuks medical student to celebrate her second medal in international athletics. The next morning, she was back in the circle. This time, armed with a discus in hand. She qualified the finals with a throw of 56.60 metres. This was the fourth-best distance in the heats. In the shot-put final, she threw 17.34 metres to take the bronze medal. Uys is one of the few female field athletes who competes in three of the four athletic throwing events. Earlier this season, during the South African Championships in Potchefstroom, she achieved what few athletes have ever done. Her performance might even be a first in South African athletics. Uys medalled in three events. She won gold in the shot put and discus events and silver in the hammer throw. At the USSA Championships, she won all three events. Team SA added a bronze medal in shot-put with Colette Uys getting to the podium at the FISU World University Games. 'I know I'm going to have to make a decision. At most, I can compete in two of the three events. I will obviously compete in the hammer throw. Choosing between the other two events is difficult. The distances I throw during training suggest that I could be one of the top three in South Africa, but I prefer the shot put more,' she explained. It is impressive to note the improvement Uys has made from last year to now. Last year, her best performance in the shot put was 16.58 metres; it is now 18.14 metres. In the discus, it was 55.55 metres and now it's 57.94. Last year her best distance in the hammer throw was 64.31 metres. This year she threw 65.84 metres. Marlie Viljoen defends World University Games 400m title with new lease of life

Image: Reg Caldecott Marlie Viljoen felt like her world had come crashing down during a recent injury-enforced spell on the sidelines. As she gears up to defend her 400m title at the FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, on Monday, she realises it may have been a blessing in disguise. In March, the Tuks student was in high spirits after setting a personal best of 51.42 seconds in the 400m. She was convinced she was capable of even faster times. It didn't happen; within days, every step she took on the track was accompanied by pain. It became unbearable after a race in Botswana, so she went to the doctor. A scan revealed she had suffered a stress fracture. For three weeks, she had to get by on crutches. Crippling blow 'It was as if my world had come crashing down. I was in the best shape of my life, but now I couldn't participate in the South African Championships or the national student meet,' the South African one-lap star said. 'The worst thing was that I had to withdraw from the World Relays after being a member of the 4x400m team that had broken the South African record. 'I almost gave in to total self-pity. Sitting in the stands watching the women's 400m finals at the national championships was agonising. I should have been on the track racing. 'Luckily I realised that feeling sorry for myself wouldn't get me anywhere. I began doing my rehabilitation exercises with dedication. I worked out at the gym, using weights, rowing, the treadmill, cycling, and swimming. "The one thing I missed was not being able to run. It made me realise that I was truly an athlete. 'The injury could be a blessing in disguise. If I hadn't been injured, I would not have put so much pressure on myself to defend the world student title and run even faster times. "I am more open-minded now. My only goal is to be the best I can in every race. 'Everyone knows that in the final, anything can happen. Hopefully, I can make South Africans proud again. In the end, all that really matters is knowing that I gave it my all.'
