Close shave for Air India plane during Mumbai touchdown
Visuals showed the nacelle of the right engine -- the housing that surrounds the engine -- damaged, evidently having made contact during what is called a runway excursion. The damage to the nacelle means a part of the engine had an impact with the tarmac or the soft side of the runway. The clump of grass on the rear part of the engine indicates that the impact was deep.
Government sources said the plane, after landing, made a runway excursion to one side of the runway. "Marking of one wheel of aircraft went into the grassy area on the side of the runway," a source said. Three signage boards and four runway edge lights were found broken after the incident.
According to Air India, the aircraft has been grounded for checks, and the inspection is underway. The two pilots have been derostered pending an inquiry into what led to the scare.
This incident comes at a time when the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation is closely looking at safety protocols for passenger flights in the aftermath of the AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad last month that claimed over 250 lives.

Only then will people follow rules,' commented one user. Another wrote, 'They will stand for 10 minutes in the aisle to save 15 seconds, and then wait 30 minutes at the baggage belt.'

Doha-bound Air India Express flight develops technical snag, returns to Calicut airport
An Air India Express flight bound for Doha from Calicut International Airport on Wednesday returned a couple of hours after takeoff due to a technical fault. "There was some technical issue in the aircraft's cabin AC. It was not an emergency landing," the official said. The passengers safely deboarded the plane. According to airport authorities, either the technical issue would be rectified or another aircraft would be arranged for the travellers to resume their journey. An Air India Express spokesperson said that it was a "precautionary landing" due to a technical error, and an alternative flight would be arranged for the passengers by 1:30 p.m. "Till then all arrangements, like food and water, have been made for the passengers at the airport," he said. Air India plane's tail caught fire in Delhi The latest incident involving an Air India flight comes just a day after the tail of the carrier's flight caught fire shortly after landing at Delhi's Indira Gandhi Airport (IGI) from Hong Kong on Tuesday. Though the aircraft sustained some damage, passengers and crew members disembarked safely. The aircraft in question was a two-year-old Airbus aircraft previously operated by Vistara. According to the airline, Hong Kong to Delhi Flight AI 315 suffered an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after landing and parking at the gate on Tuesday, July 22. Air India hit the headlines for two different aircraft incidents on Monday. A Kolkata-bound Air India plane had to abort takeoff due to a technical snag at the Delhi airport. In another incident, Air India flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai, veered off the runway while landing at the Mumbai airport in heavy rain.

The errors came to light after Dr Fiona Wilcox, an inner west London coroner, began verifying the identities of the repatriated British nationals after cross-checking their DNA with samples provided by families. 'I've been sitting down in the homes of these lovely British families over the last month, and the first thing they want is their loved ones back,' said Healy-Pratt, who is responsible for investigating and uncovering the complete circumstances surrounding the tragedy, reported the Daily Mail. Although the remains of nearly all the victims are believed to have been recovered within the three days of the incident, the extreme 1500°C heat during the crash left most bodies severely burnt and unrecognizable. Others were mutilated or fragmented by the violent impact of the crash. This meant that a lot of the families received the remains of their near ones in plastic containers, instead of coffins from the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, reports the Daily Mail. In the most severe cases, matches were made using dental records to aid in the identification process. After the crash, nearly 40 officials from across Gujarat, including teams from the Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), worked to match DNA samples. More than 50 experts from departments including Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Pathology were involved in the testing. At BJ Medical College, rigorous blood sample collection was carried out. Out of the 261 lives lost in Air India Flight 171 that crashed just seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London's Gatwick airport, 52 were British citizens. (With TOI inputs)
