Burgess hopes to earn a spot at Saints crowded safety position
We are down to a 24 day wait until the New Orleans Saints begin their 2025 regular season. Their opponent will be the Arizona Cardinals, who they'll host in the Superdome. Veteran safety Terrell Burgess wears No. 24 with the Saints at the moment. If that plays out, he'd become the 26th player to wear that number in the regular season for the team. Burgess is also our Saints Player of the Day. Here's a closer look at his career.
From San Marcos High School in California, Burgess committed to the University of Utah. He'd spend his first three seasons as a little-used reserve. As a senior in 2019, Burgess finally earned a starting role. He responded by finishing third on the Utes with 81 tackles, including 8 for loss and a half sack. Burgess also had 1 interception, broke up 5 passes, and had 2 fumble recoveries. He'd shown enough for the Los Angeles Rams and defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to select him at the end of the third round in the 2020 NFL draft.
Burgess appeared in seven games as a reserve safety and special teamer during his rookie year before a broken ankle ended his season. The following year, Burgess played in 16 games with two starts as a member of a Rams defense that helped the team to a Super Bowl LVI title. Los Angeles released Burgess eight games into the 2022 season, where he'd be picked up by the New York Giants but make just one game appearance. Burgess was signed by Washington during the 2023 offseason in free agency. He'd be with Washington only one year, recording a career-best 25 tackles over 12 contests. In 2024, Burgess signed a free-agent deal with the Buffalo Bills, but was released at the end of training camp.
Now reunited with Brandon Staley, his first defensive coordinator with the Rams, Burgess is trying to earn a spot in the New Orleans safety rotation. He's also reunited with Julian Blackmon, a teammate at Utah. Burgess is very good on special teams, which could turn the heads of coaches. He'll also have to show something defensively in the preseason, where he'll be competing with Jordan Howden, rookie Jonas Sanker, Ugo Amadi, J.T. Gray, and Elliott Davison for just a few available spots behind expected starters Blackmon and Justin Reid.

Former Seahawks QB delivers surprising take on Kenneth Walker III

Former Seahawks QB delivers surprising take on Kenneth Walker III originally appeared on The Sporting News Kenneth Walker III could face a challenging situation with the Seattle Seahawks for his starting job. One former player states the 24-year-old should start as a backup when Week 1 kicks off for Seattle. Walker struggled with injuries late last season, while Zach Charbonnet showed promise stepping in as Seattle's No. 1 running back. As a result, former Seahawks quarterback Brock Huard believes Charbonnet should be the starter in Week 1 over Walker. 'Zach Charbonnet is gonna start versus the 49ers Week 1 at home,' Huard said (h/t Seattle Sports). 'And that's not an inside source. … That's just taking in all of this information and it's doing the Mike Macdonald thing: you pay off the guys that earn it. Zach Charbonnet has earned this.' Last season, Walker missed six games due to oblique, calf, and ankle injuries, adding up to 10 missed games over the past three seasons. In his absence, Charbonnet recorded 909 scrimmage yards and nine total touchdowns in 17 games for Seattle as he filled in for the games in which Walker was out. MORE: Seahawks trade idea sends two major pieces to Dolphins for Tyreek Hill Charbonnet's strong performance on the field will earn him playing time, but now it appears he has a chance to be a starter. Moreover, Huard believes that the third-year running back is doing everything that's asked of him by the coaching staff. 'When you're talking about asserting yourself as a leader, that's what Mike Macdonald wants in every one of his position groups,' Huard added. 'And a guy that's available, a guy that posts. … I think you've gotta give the guy what he's earned. Zach Charbonnet will be the starter Week 1 versus San Francisco.' Seattle has a new quarterback in Sam Darnold, who will likely lean on the running game early as he adjusts to the offense and his teammates. Whether it's Walker or Charbonnet, Darnold should have dependable support on the ground to help open up the passing game.

Schwarber, Harper help snap Phillies' three game skid in 6-2 win over Nationals. Duran injured in 9th.

Kyle Schwarber hit his 43rd homer, a tiebreaking, three-run shot in the seventh inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Friday night to snap a three-game skid. Bryce Harper followed Schwarber with a drive over the center-field fence, the sixth time this season the Phillies have homered back-to-back. Both ex-Nats were cheered by a pro-Philly crowd of 35,143, and Schwarber got "M-V-P!" chants when he batted in the ninth. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran, pitching in a non-save situation in the ninth, took a sharp grounder off his right foot from Paul DeJong and came up limping. After a lengthy visit by trainers, he rode off the field in the Nationals' bullpen cart. After a solid start by Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore, the National League East-leading Phillies feasted on last-place Washington's inexperienced bullpen. Clayton Beeter (0-2) walked two batters in the seventh and gave way to Konnor Pilkington, who hung a 1-0 slider that Schwarber sent 456 feet into the right-field stands. Phillies ace Zack Wheeler was limited to five innings for the second consecutive start. He allowed two runs on four hits, including the third career homer by Nationals rookie Daylen Lile. Tanner Banks (4-2) pitched a scoreless sixth. Gore settled down after a rocky first inning that included an RBI double by Harper. He pumped his fist and yelled after he fanned Harrison Bader to end the sixth with the game tied at 2-all. Riley Adams led off the Nationals' fifth with a walk and the 263-pound catcher caught Wheeler by surprise by stealing his first base of the season. But Wheeler retired the next three batters to keep it tied. After pitching to a 13.12 ERA in four starts following his first All-Star appearance, Gore has a 1.50 ERA in his two most recent outings. Veteran Phillies RHP Taijuan Walker (4-5, 3.39 ERA) opposes the Nationals' Cade Cavalli (0-0, 3.86), who will make his third start of the season, on Saturday.
