Principal, wardens of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha reassigned to Sabah Education Dept amid probe into Zara Qairina's death
The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the decision following the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) statement that the Bukit Aman Special Task Force has taken over the probe into the case.
'MOE will fully cooperate with the authorities to ensure the investigation is conducted thoroughly, carefully and comprehensively,' the ministry said in a statement today.
MOE also emphasised that the case is now a top priority for the ministry.
'We hope that a transparent and complete investigation can be carried out to deliver justice for the family and all parties involved,' the statement added. — Bernama

It is the cry of every victim whose dignity has been trampled, whose confidence has been destroyed, and whose smile has been erased by the hands of bullies. Today, we speak out because staying silent means we are complicit." On X, many people stressed the need for answers and action against bullying. Meanwhile, @atiqroslee1 posted: "May little sister Zara Qairina receive true justice. My condolences to the family of the late Zara. Al-Fatihah for her. Stop bullying now!" Last weekend, the movement took to the streets, with thousands of people gathering in Sandakan and Tawau in Sabah as well as the Federal Territory of Labuan. Another rally was also held outside the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur. On Aug 13, the Attorney General's Chambers announced that an inquest will be held to look into her death.

MACC widens probe into online media company after two journalists with military background arrested in smuggling ring
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will investigate an online media company following the arrest of two of its staff members during Op Sohor, who are believed to be involved in a smuggling syndicate. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the owner of the company would be summoned soon to provide a statement. 'We have reason to believe the media company is being used as a front to enable and facilitate money laundering activities,' he told Bernama today. Azam added that investigations are ongoing to determine the company's involvement in the smuggling operation. He also revealed that the two journalists arrested, along with eight other individuals—including senior military officers, are believed to have previously served in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). 'They are former MAF personnel, and initial investigations suggest they may have provided information to the smugglers,' Azam said. On Wednesday (Aug 13), the media reported that MACC had remanded 10 individuals, including five senior MAF officers and two journalists from a news portal, suspected of involvement in a smuggling syndicate in the southern part of the country. Also remanded were a company manager, an administrative assistant from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), and a foreign woman. The suspects, aged between 30 and 55, were arrested in the Klang Valley during Op Sohor, conducted by MACC's Intelligence Division in collaboration with the police (PDRM). — Bernama

High Court upholds conviction of Kuching teacher for sexually assaulting six students, orders jail time to run concurrently
KUCHING, Aug 15 — The High Court here yesterday dismissed the appeal of a boarding school counselling teacher convicted of sexually assaulting six male students, but ordered his prison terms to run concurrently for a total of 15 years. Judicial Commissioner Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah made the decision after dismissing the appeal of the 35-year-old appellant to set aside the sentence and conviction handed down by the Sessions Court on Oct 21, 2022. The original consecutive sentence against the 35-year-old appellant totalled 90 years, with each charge carrying 15 years' imprisonment. However, the court upheld the 24 strokes of the cane imposed by the lower court. All the six charges were framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which is punishable under Section 14 of the same Act and read together with Section 16 of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and possible caning upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, between 11.30pm and 4am in March, April, and May 2018, the teacher sexually assaulted the students, aged between 14 and 16, at separate times and dates in the school compound. He touched the victims' private parts and thighs, as well as hugged one of them. Police reports were lodged by all the victims and investigations revealed that several of them had been assaulted on multiple occasions. Deputy public prosecutor Nor Azhari Yusof appeared for the prosecution. — The Borneo Post
