'Emergency' lands in legal trouble: Makers of Kangana Ranaut starrer sued by author for 'historical inaccuracies'
Kangana Ranaut
's much-talked-about film 'Emergency' has once again landed in legal trouble. The historical drama, which stars Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is now caught in a legal mess after senior journalist and author
Coomi Kapoor
filed a lawsuit against the makers.
As reported by PTI, Kapoor has accused Kangana's production house,
Manikarnika Films
Private Limited, and streaming platform Netflix of wrongly using her book and name, and of changing historical facts in the film.
'They breached the contract'
Coomi Kapoor, who wrote 'The Emergency: A Personal History', claims that she had signed a contract with Manikarnika Films and Penguin Random House allowing the adaptation of her book into a feature film. However, she believes that the agreement has been 'blatantly breached.' According to the agreement, the filmmakers had the right to creatively adapt the content. But there were two important conditions added by Kapoor herself, on her daughter's legal advice.
'My daughter is a lawyer, so on her advice, I had included two clauses. While the producers had full artistic freedom to create the film, nothing should be altered that contradicts historical facts that are publicly available,' Kapoor told PTI.
She added, 'The contract also stated that the author's name and book could not be used for promoting or exploiting the film without prior written consent. I was in Goa and had not seen the film at the time, believing that they would honour the contract. But they are still claiming that the film is based on the book.'
Film accused of using her name without permission
The journalist says she was shocked to see that the title of the film – 'Emergency' – was too close to her book's name. She believes this was done on purpose to gain attention. Kapoor said the original plan was for the film to use only one specific chapter from her book focusing on Indira Gandhi. Instead, the film went much further, she claims, and included 'historical inaccuracies'.
'Factually, the Emergency was not removed till after Mrs Indira Gandhi lost the general election in March 1977,' her legal notice stated.
Kapoor also pointed out that the filmmakers did not respond to the legal notices she had sent on 3 April. With no reply from Kangana's team or Netflix, she moved ahead with a formal lawsuit.
Seeking compensation for 'damage'
Kapoor says the film has caused her serious reputational and professional harm. She's now asking for compensation to cover what she calls emotional, financial and legal damage.
As mentioned by PTI, the legal notice read, 'If you fail to comply, our client reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings to seek appropriate remedies for this egregious violation of her rights.'
What is the film 'Emergency' about?
Released in cinemas on 17 January 2025, 'Emergency' is a political drama set during one of the most controversial periods in Indian history, the 21-month Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977. Kangana Ranaut not only stars in the lead role as Indira Gandhi but also directs and co-produces the film under her banner Manikarnika Films. The cast includes some well-known names like Anupam Kher
Shreyas Talpade
,
Milind Soman
,
Mahima Chaudhry
, and others.

Sunita Ahuja Blames Govinda's "Wrong Circle" For Career Downfall
New Delhi: Being a '90s icon is no small deal. But staying one in 2025? That's a different ballgame. And if there is one person who has been saying it like it is – without filters – it is Govinda's wife, Sunita Ahuja. In a candid chat with The Powerful Humans, Sunita did not hold back while addressing why the Hero No.1 star has been MIA from the big screen for so long. And let us just say, the blame did not fall on the star or bad luck. It fell right on the people in his corner. 'Why hasn't Govinda been seen on the big screen for the past 17 years?' she questioned, before answering it herself. 'Because the circle around him is completely wrong. Sab wah-wah karne waale log hain.' According to Sunita Ahuja, these are not the kind of voices that help an artist evolve. In fact, she admitted that these people have even sparked fights between her and Govinda. ' Mera aur Govinda ka jhagda bhi hojaata hai kyunki main naa jhooth nahi bol sakti aur chaplusi nahi kar sakti [Govinda and I also end up having arguments because I just can't lie or flatter anyone]," she said. Sunita painted a pretty clear picture of the people surrounding him – a writer, a secretary and a friend-like lawyer — all of whom she believes are doing more harm than good. ' Wah Chi Chi bhaiya kya kamaal kardia [Wow, Chi Chi Bhaiya, what an amazing job you have done],' she mocked their sycophantic praise. ' Abey tu sach toh bol. Hum sach bolte hain to chidhta hai voh [Oh come on, be honest. When I speak the truth, he gets irritated]," she added. As per Sunita, it is not just Govinda's company that has her worried. It is his mindset. Govinda's wife, who now lives with the actor in the US, also shared that she has been pushing him to evolve with the times. Her advice? 'I told him, the 90s are over. It's 2025 now. Look at what's working today – Netflix and OTT platforms," Sunita revealed. Sunita also addressed a key myth that seems to have built up around Govinda over the years – that solo-hero films are his forte. But she called out this idea too. 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan wasn't a solo-hero film. Aankhen wasn't either. The people around him planted this myth in his head: 'Sir, you're Hero No.1—your film will definitely work!' But where do solo-hero films work today?" she asked. Sunita stated that what Govinda needs now is not more flattery, but solid scripts, a great director and a team that is not afraid to tell him the truth. Govinda and Sunita Ahuja got married in March 1987. The couple are proud parents to a daughter, Tina, and a son, Yashvardhan. Govinda was last seen in Rangeela Raja, a 2019 comedy film. The film had him in a double role and was directed by Sikander Bharti.

'Derogatory' Remarks Against Amaravati: Journalist Who Hosted Show Arrested
Amaravati: Senior Telugu journalist Kommineni Srinivas Rao was arrested in Hyderabad on Monday for hosting a programme on a vernacular channel where a scribe allegedly made derogatory remarks against the greenfield capital city Amaravati, said a police official. Guntur district Superintendent of Police S Satish confirmed that Thullur police from Amaravati have arrested the journalist. "Thullur police have arrested Kommineni Srinivas Rao from Hyderabad over the derogatory remarks against Amaravati," Satish told PTI, adding that the journalist is being brought to Andhra Pradesh from Telangana. VVR Krishna Raju, the journalist, who was also part of the programme, was accused of spewing venom against Amaravati and its women. According to information shared by a source close to the TDP-led NDA government, the duo were booked under BNS Sections 79, 196 (1), 353 (2), 299, 356 (2) and 61 (1) and Section 67 of the IT Act, including Section (1) of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Meanwhile, YSRCP said that an FIR was registered against Rao four days ago in Thullur police station, accusing him of "failing to intervene during the broadcast", which featured those alleged vitriolic remarks. "Immediately after his arrest, Rao was transferred to Vijayawada. Rao, a senior citizen, questioned the legality of the arrest without explanation," said a note from the YSRCP. Condemning the arrest, YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, called it a "political vendetta". "In any discussion, diverse opinions are natural. Punishing an anchor for guests' statements is not only unjust, it's dangerous," Reddy said in a post on 'X'. The former chief minister questioned the rationale behind punishing a moderator for remarks made by panelists during a televised debate, warning such actions endanger democratic discourse and press freedom. He accused the TDP-led NDA government of suppressing dissent, using fear and intimidation tactics to silence intellectuals, journalists, and opposition voices across the southern state. He alleged that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was "weaponising the state apparatus" to divert public attention from failures, corruption, and broken electoral promises. "You (Naidu) were given five years-one has already passed. The day will come when the people will demand answers for your abuses and injustices," Reddy warned.
