$20K offered in Dearborn road rage shooting that killed 19-year-old
Rowan Baseti of Dearborn Heights was fatally struck by gunfire on Feb. 21 when her vehicle was shot at around 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Tireman Avenue and West Morrow Circle on Dearborn's east side.
"To say that my family and I are devastated or heartbroken — it's an understatement. Losing Rowan broke us," said the victim's brother, Hani Baseti, at a Friday news conference, exactly a month after his sister was killed. "She was only 19 years old, loved, full of life and innocence. She had a bright future ahead of her.
"Her smile could light up the whole room."
Joined by the victim's family and Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, Police Chief Issa Shahin announced that a $20,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest and charges in the road rage shooting that killed Rowan.
Rowan was driving a black 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee when a white 2015 Chrysler 200 allegedly cut her off near the intersection of Warren Avenue and the Southfield Freeway Service Drive, according to Dearborn police. The victim then followed the Chrysler to get the license plate number, heading north on the Southfield Service Drive before turning east onto Tireman Avenue.
Police say the victim followed the vehicle for 2 miles.
"As the vehicles reached the intersection of Tireman and West Morrow Circle, the suspect vehicle turned north onto Cheyenne Street and fired several gunshots at the victim's vehicle," according to a Dearborn police release the day after the incident. "One of the bullets entered the victim's vehicle through the windshield, fatally striking the driver."
Rowan had two friends in the car with her when the chase and the shooting took place, according to the release. Police pronounced Rowan dead upon arrival; the two female passengers were not injured.
"Rowan knows not to follow any cars; we've had that talk multiple times — if somebody scratched your car, hit you — if you can't take a picture, don't take a picture. Someone told her to follow that car," the victim's sister, Serin Baseti said through tears at the news conference. "Sadly, one of her friends were the ones who told her to pursue that car. That's what she sadly did. She's never the one to just chase a car or anything like that."
In light of the shooting and as a reminder to the public, Shahin advised not to follow a vehicle during a traffic altercation; instead, separate yourself. If possible, provide any information you have to law enforcement for follow-up.
Rowan is remembered by her family as a beloved daughter, sister, and aunt who had a bright future ahead. A graduate of Dearborn High School, she was continuing her education at Henry Ford College and planned to become a physician's assistant.
"As Muslims, we're taught to believe that if you kill an innocent life, it's as if you killed all of humanity, and that's how we feel today," Hani, said. "My father is standing right behind me today, sadly, because he had to bury his little girl. As a parent, you never seem to think that you'll bury your younger ones."
Rowan's brother urged the public to come forward with any information, no matter how small.
"To the person or people who are responsible. We know that the DPD will bring justice. You stole Rowan's future and stole her from us," he said. "We urge anyone who's seen anything or heard anything to speak up so that my beautiful baby sister can get the rest she deserves. We urge you to come forward, no matter what information you have."
Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to make an anonymous tip at 1-800-SPEAK UP.
The $20,000 reward comes from donations by local businesses and a matching contribution from Crime Stoppers of Michigan.
"What we're asking for is the community's assistance and support to come forward," Hammoud said. "The $20,000 is an opportunity to change your life, but most importantly, it's an opportunity to bring closure to the family that's standing here today."

New details revealed on Israel's tragic strike on Catholic church in Gaza
Israel's strike on the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza has resurfaced one month after a shell left multiple civilians dead and injured at the church compound. On July 19, a shell fired by the Israel Defense Forces hit the Holy Family Catholic Church, which is the only Catholic church located in Gaza. The strike left 3 people dead and 10 people injured, including the parish priest. At the time, the Israel Defense Forces claimed that the church was 'mistakenly' hit by fragments from a shell that was fired as part of 'operational activity in the area.' According to The Intercept, the deceased victims included Saad Salama, a 60-year-old janitor; Fumya Ayaad, an 84-year-old woman who had been receiving psychosocial aid at the church's compound; and Najwa Abu Dawood, a 71-year-old mother with a hip fracture. The outlet noted that the injured victims included Father Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest, and Najeeb Tarazi, a man with disabilities. The Intercept reported that July's strike by the Israel Defense Forces left the church's compound with significant damage, including heavy damage sustained by the primary church building. READ MORE: Video: 3 killed, 10 injured in Israeli strike on Catholic church in Gaza According to The Intercept, the Catholic church's compound served as a shelter for 500 to 600 Palestinian Christians. The outlet noted that 54 people with disabilities received shelter at the church compound and that many children and elderly individuals were also housed at the Catholic church in Gaza. The Intercept reported that 46-year-old Shadi Abu Dawood's mother, Najwa Dawood, was killed in the Israeli strike, while his son Suhail was critically injured in the attack. Shadi Dawood told The Intercept that the 'massacre' took place at 10 a.m. 'The scene was horrifying — my mother was covered in blood and wounded in the head,' the 46-year-old said. 'I kept calling her: 'Mom, wake up, Mom, wake up.' She's now gone to a place where there is no pain, no sorrow.' Mosa Ayaad, whose aunt, Fumya Ayaad, was killed in the Israeli strike, told The Intercept, 'Seeing the church targeted was a wound to the soul. For us, it is not just a building — it is a house of prayer, a house of gathering, a refuge for the weak.' 'Here, Muslims and Christians share the same fate: the same fear, the same loss, the same siege,' Mosa Ayaad added. 'And under these conditions, our bonds grow even stronger, because we are all fighting to survive and to protect what remains of our lives and dignity.'

3 arrested after shooting, hit-and-run crash in Detroit
Three people are in custody after a shooting and a hit-and-run crash in Detroit on Saturday night, police said. The shooting happened around 7 p.m. on the 19000 block of Rowe Street on the city's east side. Laurie Carter with the Detroit Police Department said shots were fired into a home that had people inside and at a vehicle. No one was injured. Police said the people involved in the shooting then left the area in a black Chrysler. A law enforcement helicopter later found the Chrysler, which officials said was involved in a hit-and-run crash. Police said the Chrysler hit a vehicle and then crashed into a house. A female who was in the vehicle that the Chrysler hit was taken to the hospital. Carter said she "appears to be okay." A 21-year-old man, a 25-year-old man and a third male in the Chrysler were arrested after attempting to leave the crash scene on foot. Police said they recovered two Draco rifles.

Semi attempting U-turn on Florida's Turnpike led to triple-fatal crash, FHP says
ST. LUCIE COUNTY – A semi tractor-trailer attempting a U-turn in an 'official use only' area of Florida's Turnpike led to the fatal crash that killed three South Florida people Aug. 12, state highway officials said. The Florida Highway Patrol released initial findings Aug. 13 of the two-vehicle crash near the turnpike's 171-mile marker just south of the St. Lucie County north border. The deceased people were not identified by name but were listed as a 30-year-old Florida City man, a 37-year-old Pompano Beach woman and a 54-year-old Miami man. All three were occupants of a black 2015 Chrysler Town & Country van, while two California men ages 25 and 28, listed as occupants of a blue 2024 International semi tractor trailer, were said to be uninjured. Describing what happened in the crash, highway officials said just before 3 p.m. Monday the minivan and semi were traveling north on the turnpike. The large truck, which was hauling a box trailer, was in the outside lane and attempted a U-turn into an 'official use only' area along the turnpike, according to FHP. As the semi tractor-trailer crossed 'over all northbound travel lanes' to make the U-turn on the access road, the agency said the minivan, which was in the inside lane, was 'unable to avoid' it and collided with and became wedged under the left side of the trailer. Both passengers in the minivan were pronounced deceased at the site of the crash shortly before 3:15 p.m. The driver was flown to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce where he later died from his injuries just before 5:15 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. As of Wednesday afternoon, highway officials said in the report they had not yet contacted family members of some of those who died in the crash. Corey Arwood is a breaking news reporter for TCPalm.
