State leaders: Fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride
KOTA KINABALU: The peace and harmony enjoyed by the people of Sabah need to be treated as the most valuable legacy for future generations, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
In urging all citizens to continue preserving this harmony, he said the unity among the diverse races and religions in the state is key to its strength and prosperity.
'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said at the launch of the state-level National Month 2025 as well as Sabah Day, which also falls on Aug 31.
Hajiji said every individual is responsible in making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms an avenue to strengthen understanding, rather than sow division.
'Today's launch (of the fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign) is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence, which is not just freedom from colonisation, but also from poverty and division,' he said.
The National Day and Sabah Day celebration held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of their forefathers' struggle in defending the dignity of the nation, said Hajiji.
In GEORGE TOWN, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described Penang as a true reflection of the Malaysia Madani spirit, with its rich diversity of cultures, races and religions living harmoniously in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
'Unity is our strength. It is the foundation of Penang's continued progress, in alignment with the aspirations of the Penang2030 Vision.
'The National Month celebration is a manifestation of our love and affection for our beloved country. It is also a tribute to the sacrifices of past generations who gave everything for the freedom we enjoy today,' he said after launching the state-level National Month celebration and the 'Fly the Jalur Gemilang' campaign.
He said Malaysians should reflect on the true significance of the Jalur Gemilang, a symbol of sovereignty, unity and national dignity.
'Raise the Jalur Gemilang with pride and love for the country, for within its colours are enshrined the nation's identity, history of struggle and the undying spirit of independence,' he said.

Belgian princess to resume Harvard studies after Trump move to ban foreign students
FILE PHOTO: Belgium's Crown Princess Elisabeth attends National Day celebrations in Brussels, Belgium July 21, 2025. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Princess Elisabeth, 23-year-old heir to the Belgian throne, will be able to continue her studies at Harvard University, her spokespeople said, after she was caught up in a U.S. government move to bar the entry of foreign students to study there. "I can confirm that, for now, all the conditions seem to be in place for the princess to continue her studies at Harvard," the Belgian Royal Palace's communication director Xavier Baert said on Tuesday, confirming a newspaper report. In May, when U.S. President Donald Trump's administration announced the ban, the Royal Palace voiced concern that Princess Elisabeth, being a Belgian national, might be unable to continue her studies at Harvard. But in June, a federal judge blocked the administration from implementing the proclamation Trump signed that sought to bar foreign nationals from entering the U.S. to study at Harvard. The Trump administration has said it is trying to force change at Harvard and other top-level universities across the U.S., contending they have become bastions of leftist "woke" thought and antisemitism, which they deny. The administration has appealed the judge's ruling, but with the new school year set to begin on Sept 2, the injunction against the foreign student ban remains in effect. The future queen of Belgium is set to begin her second year of a two-year master's program in Public Policy at Harvard, a course designed to broaden students' perspectives and sharpen their skills for "successful careers in public service", according to Harvard's website. Almost 6,800 international students attended the 388-year-old university in its most recent school year, comprising about 27% of its student population. Akmal Salleh to be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code in Penang on Friday
GEORGE TOWN: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has confirmed that he will face court proceedings this Friday. In a post on his Facebook page, Akmal said he had been contacted by police and informed that he would be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code. "However, I am currently performing the umrah in Mecca," he added. "Therefore, I will shorten my umrah and return to face the charge this Friday at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate's court at 8am. "If this is the price I must pay to uphold the sovereignty of the nation, I will not back down even an inch," he said. Section 505(b) of the Penal Code states that anyone who makes, publishes, or circulates any statement, rumour, or report with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public, whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or public tranquillity, shall be punished with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both. Akmal ended his post by requesting prayers and stating: "See you in court this Friday." Last Thursday, Akmal led more than 300 Umno, Bersatu and Pas supporters on a 1.4km march carrying the Jalur Gemilang in a show of respect for the national flag. The gathering followed a recent controversy involving an upside-down Jalur Gemilang displayed at a hardware store in Kepala Batas. Early Saturday morning, Akmal completed giving his statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters over the assembly in Kepala Batas. His lawyer, Aizat Azam, said the Merlimau assemblyman had fully cooperated and answered all of the approximately 80 questions posed by the investigating officer.
