Amritpal's fresh detention under NSA begins in Dibrugarh jail

Time of India23-04-2025

Dibrugarh:
Waris Punjab De
chief
Amritpal Singh
began a fresh term of detention at the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail on Wednesday under the
National Security Act
(NSA), after his previous two-year detention expired on April 22.
A Punjab Police team arrived at the jail to formally execute the renewed
detention order
issued by Amritsar district magistrate Sakshi Sawhney. Officials confirmed that Singh was handed a pen drive containing the grounds for his detention and related documents in the presence of
Dibrugarh Jail
superintendent. A laptop was temporarily provided to him to review the contents.
The new NSA detention order was first served to Singh on April 18 by Punjab Police DSP Guruvinder Singh of Ajnala (Amritsar rural district). The order was read out in Punjabi and English to ensure his complete understanding of the charges and legal provisions being invoked.
The Amritsar district magistrate's order cited 'grave and imminent danger' that Singh, upon release, would engage in activities 'prejudicial to the security of the State and public order'. The decision followed a proposal from Amritsar rural senior superintendent of police (SSP) Maninder Singh, who cited ongoing security concerns as justification for the extension, backed by documents, audio clips and other evidence.
"There is a grave and imminent danger that you, on your release from detention, would indulge in activities prejudicial to the security of the State and prejudicial to the maintenance of Public Order. Therefore, it is necessary to detain you afresh from April 23, 2025, to prevent such actions," the order stated.
According to the order, Singh has the right to appeal within three weeks before the Punjab govt, the NSA Advisory Board, and the central govt. His legal team is expected to challenge the extension.
While Singh's detention was extended, nine of his associates — detained alongside him in Dibrugarh — were recently transferred to Punjab after their two-year NSA terms lapsed.

Amit Shah launches language hub to 'decolonise' admin

NEW DELHI: Continuing with his govt's 'decolonisation' project, Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday launched an Indian languages section within the department of official language as a step towards dispensing with the role of English in official communication. "It would prove to be a milestone in the path to freeing administration from the influence of foreign languages," Shah said as he announced the formation of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag. So far, English had been relied upon for easy and faster official communication and filework between the Centre and non-Hindi speaking states and also among the latter. "We will definitely win the battle against imposition of English upon us," Shah, who over his six-year tenure in MHA has ensured that all filework and official communication in MHA is carried out in Hindi, declared at the launch of the Indian languages section on Friday. Elaborating on the purpose of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag at a press conference last year, secretary in department of official language Anshuli Arya had stated: "Just like Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches in (non-Hindi speaking) states get instantly translated and can be heard by the public in their respective regional language, the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag, in collaboration with Centre for Deployment of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), will put in place a universal translation system for official communication. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like At Last, An ED Pill for 87¢ That Actually Works Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo " "For instance, if the chief minister of Tamil Nadu writes a letter to the Centre in Tamil, the Union minister here can read it in his language and have the reply sent in Tamil. This will help bring the regional languages on to the centre-stage," Arya said. In his address on Friday, Shah said the Indian languages section had made the department of official language "complete" by providing a strong and organised platform to all languages, incorporating the linguistic diversity of India. Shah underlined that the Indian people's potential can be fully exploited only when their process of thinking, analysis and decision-making are in their mother-tongue. "Every language of ours is completely connected with other languages and development of all languages is not possible without each assimilate like rivers into the Ganga of Indian culture," the Union home minister stated.

"Terrorism not going to pay you any dividends": Former Deputy NSA slams Pakistan

Berlin [Germany], June 6 (ANI): Former Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) Pankaj Saran slammed Pakistan and called on the country to take action against the terror groups operating from its soil. He also hailed the visit to Germany and appreciated the strong support India received from the country in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking to ANI, Former Deputy NSA said, 'If I have to name any country in Europe with whom our relationship is really on an ascendant, it is Germany. The Germans understand it, we understand it, and there have been a series of interactions at the government level after 22nd public statements were quick and positive, so the German relationship is emerging as one of the critical relationships for India.' Speaking on discussions with Germany about how to tackle the terrorism problem emanating from Pakistan, Saran said, 'We (Indian delegation) suggested to them that one of the ways to do it is to look at the financing of terror--to look at diplomatic steps, the role of the IMF, World Bank, the FATF, the GSP plus in Europe. In all of these, Germany has a key role to play.' Elaborating German position, Saran said, 'I think the Germans got the message that what we want from them is a very unequivocal and very clear cut message to Pakistan, particularly the army establishment, which is the ruling establishment, that you know terrorism is not going to pay you any dividends, so you need to stop and you need to come back to the international mainstream.' He added, 'Words are not enough. Deeds are important. The days of giving false promises are over. What you need to see from Pakistan is actual action against terror groups.' On India-Germany ties, Saran said, 'There is a new convergence emerging between India and Germany, especially under the present government of Chancellor Merz, which was not there in the past because of the coalition in Germany, which is very positive to India.' 'So whether you talk about the condemnation of the incident, or India's right to self-defence or the right to seek justice or in general the scourge of terrorism on all of these- the Germans were with us, so I must say that the standalone position as Germany is very positive, forward in many ways, probably more forward looking than the European Union', Saran told ANI. He also briefly touched upon the various avenues of collaboration between India and Germany. Saran said, 'This is a new area, and I see that there is huge complementarity between the two economies. I think there is a new energy in the India-Germany economic relationship, technology, economy, science, defence, and manpower. So it is actually going to emerge as one of the most critical relationships which India will have with any European country.' Today, the all-party delegation also called upon the Federal Foreign Minister of Germany, Johann Wadephul. The Indian Embassy in Germany shared the details. The delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes BJP MPs Daggubati Purandeswari, MJ Akbar, Gulam Ali Khatana, and Samik Bhattacharya; Congress MP Amar Singh, Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena (UBT), AIADMK MP M Thambidurai and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. The delegation arrived in Germany after concluding their visit to Belgium. Earlier, Ravi Shankar Prasad said they raised strong concerns about terrorism during their visit to Brussels and generals of Pakistan 'run that country with the help of a military terrorist coalition', which is a 'threat' to democracy and humanity. This diplomatic effort forms part of India's global outreach following Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored militants that claimed 26 lives and injured several others. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
