TN to install 360-degree cameras, driver monitoring systems in govt buses
The project is being executed through the Institute of Road Transport (IRT).
The move follows an announcement made by Transport and Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar during the debate on the Transport Department's demand for grants in the Assembly.
According to tender notifications issued by the IRT, the government plans to equip 4,000 buses with 360-degree surveillance camera systems at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore. In addition, a pilot project worth Rs 2 crore will introduce Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) in 500 buses.
Each bus under the camera project will be fitted with four high-definition wide-angle cameras, providing a full panoramic view that helps eliminate blind spots.
Priced at Rs 37,500 per unit, these cameras will come with features such as wide dynamic range (WDR), auto white balance, digital noise reduction, and infrared capability for low-light conditions. The systems will also support encrypted data transmission and comply with established data protection norms.
Minister Sivasankar had earlier informed the Assembly that the 360-degree surveillance systems will aid in detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles that are often missed by conventional mirrors, especially in congested urban areas.
The real-time footage will also serve as valuable legal evidence in the event of road accidents.
The Driver Monitoring System (DMS) units, each costing Rs 40,000, will employ artificial intelligence and infrared sensors to monitor drivers for signs of fatigue, distraction, or drowsiness. These systems will track eye movements, head position, and posture, and provide real-time alerts to allow for immediate corrective action.
Additionally, each DMS unit will record behavioural data to support post-trip analysis and help plan training interventions for drivers.
The current rollout on 500 buses is a pilot phase, with the potential for a wider implementation depending on its effectiveness and feedback from transport authorities. This initiative marks a significant technological upgrade for Tamil Nadu's public transport system and is expected to improve both passenger safety and driver accountability across the fleet.

GIC, TPG-backed AHH targets 20 AINU hospitals by FY30, eyes GI entry
Asian Healthcare Holdings (AHH), backed by Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC and private equity firm TPG, plans to expand to about 20 nephrology and urology facilities under its Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) brand by the end of FY30. AINU currently operates over 500 beds in seven hospitals across Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Siliguri, and Chennai. It inaugurated a 200-bed flagship hospital in Hyderabad on Monday. 'Between FY26 and FY27, there will be another three to four hospitals, which will take our tally to 12-13 facilities,' Vishal Bali, executive chairman of AHH, told Business Standard. With this expansion, AINU's bed capacity will reach about 850. He added that the next phase of growth will focus on tier-II cities such as Bhubaneswar, Patna, Coimbatore, and Pune. Sandeep Guduru, chief executive officer of AINU, said Rs 150 crore in capital expenditure has been earmarked to open three to four new urology and nephrology facilities in the next 12 months. 'We are also expanding our robotic surgery capabilities in a couple of our other cities,' he added. Bali said that between FY27 and FY30, AINU could add another seven to eight hospitals, taking the total to around 20. AHH, which owns Motherhood Hospitals (maternity care), AINU, and Nova IVF (IVF), is a healthcare platform specialising in single-specialty hospitals. The network now plans to enter one or two additional specialties. 'Gastroenterology (GI) is one such specialty that we would be keen to explore,' Bali said. He explained that GI offers a strong outpatient department with endoscopy, as well as inpatient procedures largely driven by minimal access surgery. On the possibility of an initial public offering, Bali declined to share a timeline, saying it was a matter of when the investors deemed it appropriate. 'However, with the Ebitda that we have on the platform today, the company could potentially go to an IPO even in the next 16 or 18 months,' he said.

Existence of urban naxals cannot be denied, says Mumbai Police officer
Mumbai, Aug 11 (PTI) The existence of urban Naxals cannot be denied, a senior Mumbai Police officer said on Monday, adding that they are being monitored. Police teams maintain a strict vigil and take appropriate action. Police are alert and monitoring movements of urban naxals, the officer said, adding that he cannot divulge details of action. The state legislature passed the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024, in the monsoon session. The bill seeks to prevent unlawful activities of Left Wing Extremist organisations with a focus on urban Naxalism and 'passive militancy". The stringent provisions of the legislation, including hefty fines and a jail term up to seven years, have sparked criticism from civil society groups and opposition parties, who view it as a tool to suppress dissent under the pretext of national security. During an informal interaction with journalists, the police officer said terrorism is the biggest challenge being tackled by the Mumbai Police on priority, followed by the safety of women and children, narcotics and cybercrime. When asked if urban Naxals are in Mumbai, the officer said that the word 'urban" is self-explanatory. 'Police monitor them and take appropriate action. We are alert and keeping vigil on their every movement," he added. Addressing cybercrime and explaining measures to tackle the growing menace, the officer said Mumbai Police's cyber helpline number 1930 receives over 2000 calls every day about online cheating. 'After registering complaints, police daily freeze over Rs 60 lakh lost by victims within 15 to 20 minutes of the incident," he said. Emphasising the importance of a short window in reporting online frauds, he appealed to citizens to immediately dial the helpline number so that police can block the transfer of hard-earned money from falling into hands of fraudsters. 'If victims fail to inform police immediately, fraudsters withdraw money by transferring it to various accounts," he said. Addressing the issue of illegal immigrants settling in Mumbai, the officer stated that action has been taken against more than 1,000 illegal Bangladeshi nationals, and they have been deported. He said the Ganesh festival and Eid-e-Milad Un Nabi will pass off peacefully with the coordination between police and citizens. Citing orders of the court, he cautioned Ganesh mandals against using high-decibel music systems during the upcoming Ganesh festival. He said police booked a person for feeding pigeons in Girgaon, south Mumbai.
