Ceres grad remains hospitalized after paralyzing fall at UC Berkeley
A Central Valley High School graduate and current UC Berkeley student remains hospitalized and paralyzed after a 'tragic and devastating fall,' according to a family member's GoFundMe post.
On April 19 during Cal Day — an open house event held to welcome newly admitted students — Bandna Bhatti fell from the external stairway at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house and struck her head, a family member told KTVU.
KTVU also reported that Bhatti was found at the narrow passageway outside the fraternity house 15 minutes later and taken to her apartment. No one called 911 until around seven hours later.
Bhatti suffered several injuries, including a brain hematoma, a tearing of the dura with spinal fluid leakage, a scapular and spinal fracture, the GoFundMe page says. She is currently paralyzed from the waist down.
The fall occurred just days before Bhatti was set to graduate with a degree in data science.
'These injuries are not only life-altering but will require extensive and ongoing medical care, including physical therapy, rehabilitation, and specialized support to help her navigate this new chapter,' the GoFundMe page states. 'The journey ahead is extensive and demanding, but with your assistance, we hope to provide the vital resources she requires, specialized care, adaptive equipment and essential home modifications to help Bandna regain as much independence as possible.'
The GoFundMe page, which is focused on helping Bhatti receive specialized care and handle medical expenses, has raised over $106,000 as of Tuesday morning.
Baljinder Bhatti, Bandna's father, told The Bee on Monday that his daughter has no feeling and movement in her lower body.
Matt Arnold, the chief executive officer for the National Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, said in a statement that the fraternity is cooperating with university officials and local authorities in the investigation of the incident
'We are deeply concerned by recent reports of an incident involving a young student who was reportedly injured near the Phi Kappa Tau chapter house at the University of California, Berkeley,' the statement read. 'We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are fully cooperating with the university officials and local authorities in their investigation.'
Adam Ratliff, campus spokesperson, stated in an email to The Bee that the Berkeley Police Department also is investigating the incident.
'UC Berkeley is aware of an ongoing police investigation regarding reports of a student being injured off-campus near or at a fraternity. Our thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time. We are following our protocols to offer support to the student and their family,' Ratliff wrote.

Man who allegedly struck woman at Riverside ‘No Kings' protest is arrested
Police on Monday arrested a man accused of driving an SUV that struck a 21-year-old woman marching at a 'No Kings' protest in Riverside. She remains hospitalized in critical condition. Russell Prentice, 58, of Riverside was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run causing injury, the Riverside Police Department said Tuesday. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Candase Wenzel was also arrested. The 39-year-old Riverside woman is accused of having a role in taking the SUV more than 30 miles away to the remote unincorporated area of Phelan in the Mojave Desert, 'intentionally destroying and concealing evidence,' the Police Department said. Prentice allegedly fled after driving a black SUV toward a crowd of protesters marching along University Avenue, between Orange and Main streets, and striking the woman at around 9:10 p.m. Saturday. Police haven't identified the victim, but a woman who called herself a friend and created a GoFundMe page identified her as Alexa Carrasco. 'She was rushed to the hospital' and was in intensive care with 'life-threatening injuries,' wrote the friend, Leslie Hernandez. Hernandez told The Times on Monday that Carrasco was in critical condition in the intensive care unit but was stable. Carrasco's friends told KCAL-TV that she suffered severe skull injuries as well as a cracked rib, punctured lung and broken leg. After police issued a plea to the community for tips to identify and locate the suspect, officers were able to find the SUV's license plate number. Detectives were then able to identify the suspect, police said, and made an arrest in Riverside. Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez expressed his thanks for the tips that people sent to police.'We're grateful for the information they provided,' the chief said in a statement. Anyone else who has information on the hit-and-run is asked to contact Riverside Police Det. Mike Smith at MikeSmith@ or (951) 353-7103, or Det. Nic Cantino at NCantino@ or (951) 353-7104. Times staff writer Ruben Vives contributed to this report.

Man Dies After Jumping Into Georgia's Lake Lanier
A 27-year-old man has died after jumping into a lake that has claimed hundreds of lives over the last three decades. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources learned that someone had drowned on Saturday in a residential cove on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County. The individual was identified as Ramon Diaz-Soria. Witnesses say Diaz-Soria jumped into the lake, but the life jacket he wore was not properly secured. 'Once in the water, he went under and did not resurface, leaving his life jacket floating on the surface," the DNR reported. Game wardens began searching for Diaz-Soria on Saturday afternoon and suspended their search after dark, only to resume it the following day. On Sunday, his body was found in 60 feet of water. A drowning and water death report noted that Diaz-Soria was unable to swim, according to People. The victim was on a boat to celebrate a friend's birthday. His sister told Fox affiliate WAGA that his friends "couldn't find him" when he went into the water. She noted that they acted quickly when they realized he was missing, but they were unable to see and couldn't get to him in time. 'Ramon was everything to me,' she said in a statement posted to a GoFundMe account established to support the family. "He wasn't just my brother—he was my best friend, my protector, and my biggest supporter. Anyone who knew him would tell you how kind, generous, funny, and full of light he was. He was always looking out for others, always ready to lend a helping hand. Helping people wasn't just something he did—it's who he was.' The family has raised over $16,000 after Diaz-Soria's tragic passing, and they are more than halfway to their goal of $30,000 to assist with funeral costs. Over 200 people have died at Lake Lanier since 1984, according to the Georgia DNR and USA TODAY. Most of those deaths have been caused by drowning, with boating accidents also accounting for fatalities. Rest in peace to Ramon Diaz-Soria, and we send condolences to his friends, family and loved ones during this difficult time. Hiker with plans to explore CO peak vanishes, deputies say. Now, a body is found
A body matching the description of a missing New Hampshire man was found by a hiker near the summit of a Colorado mountain, sheriff's deputies said. The body is believed to belong to Russell Hardy, 55, who was reported missing June 13 after coming to Colorado Springs 'with plans to hike and explore Pikes Peak,' the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said in a June 17 post on Facebook. Identificationof the body will be confirmed by the county coroner's office, deputies said. The coroner's office also will determine a cause of death, according to deputies, who said foul play isn't suspected and instead 'this appears to be a tragic outcome of a man confronting the challenges of nature.' Hardy got to Colorado Springs on June 10 and was supposed to be back home within a couple of days, deputies said. A post made to social media put him by Crags Trailhead on June 11, according to deputies, who said his rental car was found at a trailhead. Rescuers searched for him, including using K9s and drones, deputies said. The hiker found his likely remains about noon June 16 near the Pikes Peak summit, according to deputies. On a GoFundMe page, Hardy's family said climbing the mountain 'was one of his lifelong dreams.' He reached the top and died after a fall heading down amid bad weather, his family said on the page, noting that they're taking some comfort knowing he achieved his goal 'and passed doing something he truly loved.' Pikes Peak, which stands at more than 14,000 feet tall, is west of Colorado Springs.
