It's the 2025 Lunar New Year! All About the Year of the Snake and Its Meaning in Chinese Astrology
It's time to celebrate the year of the Wood Snake!
Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year and Spring Festival, marks the end of winter and the arrival of the spring season on the lunisolar calendar. Plus, it signifies the start of the new year.
The Lunar New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice and between the spring equinox during the months of either January or February. It is regarded as the most popular holiday in China and Chinese communities around the world.
Each year is represented by one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, each holding specific personality traits. Last year was the year of the Wood Dragon, while 2025 is the year of the Wood Snake.
"The Wood Snake year is part of a 60-year cycle of the 60 pillars, which is the 60 possible combinations of the five elements and the 12 animal signs," Chinese metaphysics consultant Vicki Iskandar tells PEOPLE exclusively. Wood Snake, in particular, makes this year distinct from the next.
Similar to Western astrology's elements (fire, water, earth, air), Chinese zodiacs pair with one of the five elements in the heavenly frequency (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). "The element and the animal sign differentiate the qualities and characteristics year after year," explains Iskandar.
While the Snake year comes every 12 years, the last time we had the Wood Snake year was in 1965 according to the Chinese calendar. "The Wood Snake will have many of us on the move, while some of us may finally have the chance to take a break after a challenging Dragon year," she predicts.

The Year of the Wood Snake begins at 4:36 a.m. PT on Jan. 29, 2025. It coincides with the new moon in Aquarius, which marks the annual start of Lunar New Year.
Your Chinese zodiac sign is a snake if you were born during the following years: 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025.
"A person's Chinese zodiac sign is determined by his or her date of birth," Iskandar tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Those born in a snake year are said to be intelligent, mysterious, cautious, wise and intuitive. "As one of the more complicated signs in the Chinese zodiac, the Snake has hidden elements that keep us guessing for its next moves," writes Iskandar on Instagram.
Each of the 12 animal zodiac signs corresponds with one of five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — as part of a 60-year cycle of the 60 pillars, making each year different from the next.
There are 60 possible combinations of the five elements and the 12 animal signs, making specific matchups rare from year to year. For example, the last time it was a Wood Snake year was in 1965.
While each animal sign is associated with different traits and characteristics, so is each element. When you combine the two together, the year boasts unique significance depending on the matchup.
Iskandar tells PEOPLE that we can gain "better insights" into what 2025 will bring by looking at the world events and general trends that occurred in 1965 in comparison to the previous Snake year in 2013, which was a Water Snake year.
"Each pairing of the element and the animal sign has its own dynamics influenced by the interaction between the elements in the pillar, as each of the animal signs is also associated with an element," Iskandar says.
For example, the Snake (a Yin Fire sign) "is more at home" in a Wood environment and "in harmony with nature" since Wood produces Fire in the Chinese Five Elements theory. "Whereas Water clashes with Fire in the Water Snake pillar, which could manifest as disharmony," she adds.
In Chinese astrology, there are Yin and Yang years. A Yang year (ending in an even number) will always be followed by a Yin year (ending in an odd number) and visa versa.
The order of the elements follows the cycle of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water in the Chinese Five Elements theory. It will start with Yang Wood, followed by Yin Wood.
"The Wood Snake has Yin Wood in the heavenly frequency and Yin Fire in the Snake," says Iskandar, noting that the Snake is a Fire sign. Simply put, the Wood Snake year contains Yin Wood and Yin Fire — so 2025 as a whole is a Yin year, Iskandar makes clear.
"A Yang year will highlight more masculine, upright, rigid and linear qualities while a Yin year will be more feminine, softer and more relaxed and spontaneous," she explains. "We're more likely to soften our stance and venture outside of our comfort zone in a Yin year rather than sticking to our principles and standing our ground in a Yang year."

Just because 2024's Dragon year was also a Wood year doesn't mean it'll be the same as 2025's Wood Snake year. Yin and Yang years differ depending on the animal they match up with annually.
"2025's Yin Wood is much more flexible, tolerant and peace-oriented compared to 2024's unbending, divisive Yang Wood," Iskandar says. "The Snake is also much more unpredictable and quicker in action compared to the Dragon."
The Dragon as a Yang Earth sign can be compared to a mountain, which she notes "can be imposing and unmovable." The Snake as a Yin Fire sign can be compared to a candle flame, which she says "transforms darkness into light in an instant."Yin Fire is also transformative, like a snake shedding its skin. "It's also unpredictable," Iskandar puts forth. "Ideas and trends can spread quickly... Expect the unexpected!"
Yes! Those who are born in a Snake year (1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013) "will experience the most transformative year with major life changes," Iskandar predicts.
When the year falls on the animal sign associated with your birth year, also known as the Grand Duke year, she says it's typically a "pivotal" one. This happens every 12 years.
"If you've been considering changing your career, job or residence, this is the year to go for it," Iskandar puts forth. "The Grand Duke visiting your sign offers you a chance to reinvent yourself. This can be your most successful year with major milestones achieved."
She adds, "Opportunities may appear in the form of sudden, unexpected endings that turn out to be blessings in disguise. A positive and strategic mindset will make a big difference in shaping your year."

The year of the Wood Snake is the year to make the most! Therefore, Iskandar says it's "not a year to sit around or stay in one place."
As one of the travel stars in Chinese astrology, she says the Snake "compels us to move" and many will be called to "travel the world" as a result. "We may feel restless from the fast-paced nature of the Snake, so work off the restless energy with physical activities and remember to stay present!"
If you were born during a Snake year, get ready for an "exciting" year ahead!
Be prepared to "life-changing opportunities" that will come your way, notes Iskandar, who says that you "thrive in times of change" as a Snake. "Challenges will also abound, but you have the positive mindset needed to rise above them."
If you maintain a positive mindset, she predicts your Snake return year can be "one of the best years of your life" filled with "major milestones achieved." She adds, "Aim high as you may just reach your dreams, but hold your cards close to the heart until you're ready."
While you "move fast" as a Snake, Iskandar advises practicing "mindfulness" and staying "present" at all times. "As a Yin Fire sign, your energy can be up and down. Slow down and rest when needed to restore the Fire within."
Be sure to practice this in February, May, August and November especially, when she predicts "life will become even more fast-paced."

Kelley Wolf and Scott Wolf are starting new chapters in their life. The 48-year-old 'Real World: New Orleans' alum, who has since become a life coach and podcaster, took to Instagram on June 10 to announce that she and her husband, Scott Wolf, are divorcing. The pair were married for 21 years and share three kids — Jackson, 16, Miller, 12, and Lucy, 11. 'It is with a heavy heart that Scott and I are moving forward with the dissolution of our marriage,' she wrote in the caption alongside an image of three eagles flying over a female lion. 'This has been a long, quiet journey for me—rooted in hope, patience, and care for our children,' she continued, adding that she won't speak publicly about the details. 'I feel peace knowing that I've done everything I can to walk this path with integrity and compassion,' she added. In his own statement shared with People, Scott Wolf said 'After 21 years of marriage, I have made the most difficult decision of my life, and filed for divorce from my wife Kelley. Our children have always been, and continue to be, the loves of our lives and our every priority, so I kindly ask for privacy at this time as we help guide them through this new chapter.' Kelley Wolf met Scott Wolf, best known for his roles in 'Party of Five,' 'The Nine' and 'Nancy Drew,' in 2002 after she was an hour late to their blind date, according to Us Weekly. The couple tied the knot two years later and welcomed their first child, Jackson, in 2009. Miller was born in 2012 and Lucy followed in 2014. In her June 10 caption, Kelley Wolf praised her estranged husband and revealed what's next. He is kind, thoughtful, funny, and beautiful in spirit,' she wrote. 'We both look forward to an extraordinary life centered around the most extraordinary children,' she added. 'My priority has always been their wellbeing—and my own healing. That will never change.' Kelley Wolf's announcement comes five months after Scott Wolf admitted to troubles in their marriage. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, which took place in January, Scott Wolf opened up about how the two have faced a slew of 'challenges' that have 'changed the way I see happiness.' 'My family's been through some stuff over the past few years,' he told Us Weekly at the time. 'This period of time has been weird for a lot of people. And we sort of got blown in the wind a little bit, moved around a bunch, and [I] watched my children deal with all of that,' he added. In her June 10 Instagram post, Kelley Wolf wrote that she was 'stepping into a chapter of peace, freedom, and protection — with grace.' 'May we all remember: healing isn't loud. It's sacred,' she added. As for Scott Wolf, he last posted about his marriage on Feb. 14 in a Valentine's Day tribute to his wife and daughter. 'To my forever Valentines. You have my whole heart and always will. The most beautiful, kind, wise, brave, powerful people in my life. I love you so very much,' he wrote in the caption. He later posted a cryptic video on May 25 about 'when the heart breaks' and the 'meaning of life.'

Mom Thought Her Toddler Was Just Playing. Then Something Caught Her Eye (Exclusive)
One evening, Alex Moore was playing with her 23-month-old daughter, Addy They were being silly and listening to nursery rhymes when all of a sudden, Addy started dancing Alex watched as her daughter slid off the bed and began doing little high-kick stompsAlex Moore and her husband, Christian, both work full-time. So after wrapping up their workdays and picking up their daughter from daycare, the North Carolina-based couple likes to wind down by laying in bed to decompress. One evening, Christian went to make dinner while Alex stayed back to play with their 23-month-old daughter, Addy. They were being silly and listening to nursery rhymes when all of a sudden, Addy started dancing. Alex watched as her daughter slid off the bed and began doing little high-kick stomps. "I had no idea what she was doing until she said 'cha cha??' " Alex, 31, tells PEOPLE exclusively. Alex goes on to explain that her daughter learned the "Cha-Cha Slide" by DJ Casper at daycare. She says her teacher, Ms. Mikaila, plays the song often and has been teaching the kids the steps. Although Ms. Mikaila had previously sent Alex videos of Addy dancing along to the "Cha-Cha Slide" at daycare, this was the first time she had seen her daughter perform some of the correct steps in person — especially the stomping and the 'hands on your knees' move. "She was walking around stomping her feet with almost a high-kick fashion, and I kept giggling because I'd never seen her stomp like that before," Alex, a aesthetics technician, says. In the moment, Alex pulled out her phone and recorded the sweet scene. Later, she decided to post it to TikTok, thinking, 'This is too good to not share with more people.' But then, the video quickly went viral, amassing more than 7.4 million views and 13,000 comments. "I knew she was demanding the cha cha slide at daycare' is in incredible statement in itself 😭," one user wrote. "and it is already knows her left and right ✅️❤️," someone else replied. Another person commented, "That's actually so impressive that she knows the cha cha slide at her age .. what an icon." Reading through the comments, Alex says she couldn't help but smile. "The kind of responses I've received from the video are the exact ones I was hoping," she says. " 'This made my day, thank you so much.' It was an added bonus to hear that my daughter could excel in a dance class, because what parent doesn't want to hear that their child has a knack for something?" "My daughter brings me so much joy every day, so I really loved that I could do that for other people," the mom adds. "Also hearing from other daycare employees that they'll start implementing the song into their classrooms for teaching directions, and dance teachers that she has amazing skills for her age — that feedback really stood out to me the most." Since her daughter is so young, Alex knows won't remember much from this time, but in teaching her about it in a few years, she hopes her daughter realizes that she made a lot of people smile when they felt like they couldn't. "Addy has taught me that children truly are like flowers: when they're given a loving environment, taught things with patience and in a fun way, they can blossom into the best versions of themselves," she says. "Along with truly being able to dance your little heart out when you feel it!" Read the original article on People

Lucille Ball Found Out She Was Pregnant When Her Medical Records Were Leaked During Radio Broadcast
Lucille Ball once learned she was pregnant while listening to a radio broadcast In his new book Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television, biographer Todd S. Purdum writes that Ball was on tour with her husband Desi Arnaz in June 1950 when she was listening to the radio in between shows The broadcaster then announced her pregnancy, after being tipped off by a medical lab stafferLucille Ball once found out she was pregnant not from her doctor — but from a radio broadcaster who had been tipped off by a medical lab staffer. In his new book Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television, biographer Todd S. Purdum writes that Ball was on tour with her husband Desi Arnaz in June 1950 when she learned about her pregnancy in between shows. At the time, Ball and Arnaz were starring in a vaudeville act that required an "exhausting schedule" and "vigorous physical stunts" from Ball. Off stage, they were trying for a baby. Writes Purdum: "In June 1950, during the New York run of their vaudeville show, Lucy was relaxing in her dressing room between shows listening to Walter Winchell's radio broadcast when she heard him announce she was 'infanticipating,' the columnist's lingo for 'pregnant.' He'd been tipped off by a medical lab informant before the Arnazes themselves had learned the news." The author writes that the couple, upon learning the news, then "trimmed the planned length of the tour," though it was in vain — just weeks later, Ball, suffered a miscarriage. Purdum writes in his book that Ball had more than one miscarriage during her marriage to Arnaz, with physicians ultimately discovering they had inadvertently closed a fallopian tube while treating her for one of the miscarriages. After reversing that procedure, Ball ultimately became pregnant again in 1950, at age 39. On July 17, 1951, Ball gave birth via caesarean section, to a baby girl: Lucie. Ball would later give birth a second time, in January 1953, to what was then arguably the most famous baby in America: Desi Jr. Desi Jr.'s birth came as the couple was starring in the now-iconic sitcom I Love Lucy, which premiered in 1951 and even incorporated their second child's birth. In interviews with the author, the now-adult children explained how different their parents were. Lucie recalled how her mother "took it personally" when one of the children would disappoint her. Desi, by contrast, "was not like that," she described. "He would get really angry and blow his stack, and be loud, but then he'd be done and it would be like it never happened," Lucie said, adding that Ball, by contrast, "would get personally offended by childhood behavior or what you said, because you should have known not to say that somehow, even though no one's taught you what to say." "And she would emotionally separate from you for however long she wanted to. And it would be sometimes days, sometimes weeks," she added. While audiences were delighted by his parents' relationship, Desi Jr. told Purdum that behind the scenes, Lucy and Desi were incredibly argumentative 'It wasn't good for anyone,' Desi Jr. told the author in the book. 'And we'll always remember when they sat us down and said, 'Look, you know, things aren't working.' I mean, I remember word for word.'
