Shoplifting hits record high in England and Wales
The figures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales for the year up to March 2025 showed shoplifting offences were at the highest level since current police recording practices began in the year to March 2003."The ONS figures prove what retailers have long been telling us – that retail theft is spiralling out of control," said British Retailers Association director Tom Ironside.He said such theft was "not a victimless crime", adding that it triggered violence and abuse towards staff and cost retailers and customers £2.2bn a year."The rise in organised crime is a significant concern, with gangs hitting store after store, even within a single day," he said.
Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) chief executive James Lowman said the official statistics were only part of the story. Separate figures from the ACS crime report found convenience stores recorded more than 6.2 million incidents of shoplifting in the past year, he said."Retailers tell us that they won't report crime if they have no faith in it being investigated," he said.Mr Lowman said the figures showed that retail crime needs to be taken seriously "throughout the justice system"."Only then will we be able to start bringing the numbers down and stop widespread reoffending by criminals that are acting with confidence that they will not be apprehended," he said.Earlier this year the government unveiled the Crime and Policing Bill which the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said would address an "epidemic of street theft", including shoplifting.Under the bill the current £200 threshold for shoplifting, which means thefts under that value are treated as summary-only offences and not prioritised by police.Mr Ironside said removing that threshold would "send a clear signal that all shoplifting is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."Responding to the new ONS figures, Ms Cooper said the government was working to rebuild local policing.She said more than 500 town centres would be getting extra patrols and there would be 3,000 more neighbourhood officers and police community support officers by next spring.

Mother accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter
A mother has been charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter. Pippa McGrath, 47, appeared at Leeds Crown Court by video link on Tuesday, when she spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth. She is charged with the murder of Hope McGrath, whose body was found at a bungalow in Austhorpe Court in the Colton area of Leeds last Wednesday. West Yorkshire Police had visited the property after concerns were raised about the safety of a child. Neighbours suggested Hope had suffered with a disability and needed a wheelchair, The Sun reported. The court heard a toxicology report was likely to be relevant to the case. Judge Guy Kearl KC, the Recorder of Leeds, said a post-mortem examination on Hope was due to take place on Wednesday and that 'at least one of the issues will be the toxicology report'. The court heard psychiatric reports would be prepared to establish McGrath's fitness to plead. A date of Feb 24 was set for the trial, which is expected to take up to two weeks. McGrath was remanded in custody until her next appearance at the same court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Sep 3. The force released a photograph of Hope on Tuesday Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of the force's homicide and major inquiry team, said: 'We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hope's death. 'A photograph of the three-year-old has been released by her family. I would ask that people respect their privacy at this extremely difficult time.'

Egyptian asylum seeker dies trying to jump onto ship to Canada
A failed asylum seeker from Egypt drowned after he attempted to jump onto the ramp of a ship at Southampton docks in a bid to travel to Canada, an inquest has heard. Walid Gomaa, who was denied asylum status when he arrived in the UK in 2021, had told a friend he intended to travel across the Atlantic after living illegally in the UK for four years. The 36-year-old Egyptian national was spotted by members of the crew of the 200-metre MV Tannhauser attempting to board the vehicle-transporter ship which was due to sail to Halifax, Canada. Mr Gomaa was said to be trying to reach the ramp's finger-flaps - articulated extensions at the end of the vessel - as it was being raised ahead of sailing, the Winchester inquest was told. The operator paused the raising and saw Mr Gomaa walk away, but as they started lifting up the ramp again, the asylum seeker ran and jumped towards the ramp despite a crew member shouting at him to stop. Mr Gomaa then hit his head and fell into the sea at Empress Dock at the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal, where he drowned before a rescue boat could reach him on April 28 this year, the inquest heard. Coroner Jason Pegg said: 'Mr Gomaa attempted a second time, warnings were shouted to Mr Gomaa but he continued despite the warnings. 'Mr Gomaa jumped off the jetty towards the vessel. On this occasion Mr Gomaa was not able to grab hold of anything and fell towards the water between the jetty and the vessel itself.' The inquest heard a post-mortem examination found the cause of death was drowning, which resulted from a head injury and a fall into the water. Mr Pegg said a friend contacted police after Mr Gomaa had not been in contact and said Mr Gomaa had told him he planned to travel to Canada. The coroner said that when the friend asked how he was going to get there, Mr Gomaa replied: 'Do not worry about it.'
