Egyptian asylum seeker dies trying to jump onto ship to Canada
The 36-year-old Egyptian national was spotted by members of the crew of the 200-metre MV Tannhauser attempting to board the vehicle-transporter ship which was due to sail to Halifax, Canada. Mr Gomaa was said to be trying to reach the ramp's finger-flaps - articulated extensions at the end of the vessel - as it was being raised ahead of sailing, the Winchester inquest was told.
The operator paused the raising and saw Mr Gomaa walk away, but as they started lifting up the ramp again, the asylum seeker ran and jumped towards the ramp despite a crew member shouting at him to stop. Mr Gomaa then hit his head and fell into the sea at Empress Dock at the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal, where he drowned before a rescue boat could reach him on April 28 this year, the inquest heard.
Coroner Jason Pegg said: 'Mr Gomaa attempted a second time, warnings were shouted to Mr Gomaa but he continued despite the warnings. 'Mr Gomaa jumped off the jetty towards the vessel. On this occasion Mr Gomaa was not able to grab hold of anything and fell towards the water between the jetty and the vessel itself.'
The inquest heard a post-mortem examination found the cause of death was drowning, which resulted from a head injury and a fall into the water. Mr Pegg said a friend contacted police after Mr Gomaa had not been in contact and said Mr Gomaa had told him he planned to travel to Canada. The coroner said that when the friend asked how he was going to get there, Mr Gomaa replied: 'Do not worry about it.'

Chilling moment burglars take £500k of gold jewellery from home in sacks despite owners being inside during brazen raid
THIS is the hair-raising moment burglars steal a £500,000 jewellery hoard while the owners remain unaware inside. The brazen thieves targeted a Bromley home, in London, at around 5.40pm on December 30 last year. 8 8 8 CCTV revealed the trio broke into the property, on Bickley Road, through a bathroom window. Within 45 minutes the thugs had stolen a £500k haul and made off with their bounty in large bags. More footage showed the yobs walking across the roof, carrying the sacks, and throwing them to someone waiting below. The owners, who were inside the property throughout the raid, were unaware they'd been hit by criminals. The Metropolitan Police have released pictures of the stolen items and urged anyone who recognises them to come forward. Detective Constable Jamie White, of the Met's South Area Command Unit, said: 'While the monetary value of this theft is enormous, the sentimental value is priceless – with many of the pieces being passed down through generations of the family. Man, 64, is arrested after 'making sexual comments to children at playpark'
A man has been arrested after making lewd comments to children at a park. He approached several children and made sexual remarks. It was reported he also hugged one of the children, police said. The incident happened at Cedar Lodge Park in Oakley Road in the Regents Park area of Southampton. The 64-year-old was arrested on suspicion of inciting a 13 to 15-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity, and sexual assault. Officers were called shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday. The alleged predator publicly urinated upon arrest as well as in the police car, officers said. He was then further arrested on suspicion of exposure and criminal damage. A man has been arrested after making lewd comments to children at a park. The incident happened at Cedar Lodge Park (pictured) in Oakley Road, Southampton The man is described to be white, mostly bald with a grey beard, about 5ft 7in tall. The elderly man was also riding a red scooter. He has been bailed until November 5 while further investigations continue. Police are appealing for any witnesses who can assist with the investigation.
