More than 5,000 cops to be deployed for Asean meet
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said a detailed security plan has been drawn up with continuous monitoring to ensure that the meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre go smoothly from next Tuesday to Friday.
'Police have taken appropriate measures to ensure full preparedness ahead of this meeting.
'The main focus is the security of VIPs, traffic control and handling emergencies.
'This team will also use sophisticated technology such as facial recognition systems and explosives detection,' he told Bernama yesterday.
Azmi said police will combine forces with various departments and units, including the Federal Reserve Force, Special Operations Unit, 69 Commando and Special Branch.
He said that besides the main meeting location, security controls will also be extended to other important areas, such as the KL International Airport and Subang Airport.
'Security control will also be implemented at the delegates' accommodation locations and certain zones around the delegation arrival area, which will be gazetted as restricted or semi-restricted areas,' he said.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and further investigations are still being carried out. Anyone with related information can contact the (traffic division of) Segamat police headquarters," he said in a statement. Meanwhile, Segamat fire and rescue station operations commander Senior Fire Officer (PBK) Abd Rahim Taufik said after receiving a distress call at 1.46pm, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) with six personnel was dispatched to the scene. "On arrival at the accident scene, the operations team had to extricate the two victims in the car using special equipment. A new course: Civil servants watching the live broadcast of the 13MP presentation by Anwar in Putrajaya. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The recent tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) reflects the government's commitment to charting a sustainable development path while exercising fiscal prudence to help reduce the national deficit, said Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia economic analyst, Associate Professor Dr Mustazar Mansur. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is taking the country's debt situation seriously, with a clear focus on curbing new borrowings and narrowing the fiscal deficit. "When the deficit declines, debt levels also fall. We've heard the Prime Minister previously speak about limiting new borrowings, and he is clearly committed to avoiding excessive debt,' he said. Mustazar was speaking as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme yesterday, in an episode titled '13MP: The People's Socioeconomic Agenda and Hopes'. According to the 13MP blueprint, ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts are expected to narrow the fiscal deficit to below three per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and keep the federal debt level under 60 per cent of GDP. Commenting on the development allocation for Kota MADANI, Mustazar said the initiative reflects a public-private partnership model. "The government will not spend directly but instead grant concessions to qualified private firms. Hence, not everything announced by the government will involve direct fiscal commitments. "The government will leverage private sector expertise-firms that are more experienced, willing to take risks, and capable of assessing the viability of projects,' he added. 13MP, tabled by the Prime Minister in the Dewan Rakyat, outlines the country's development agenda for 2026-2030, with a total allocation of RM611 billion. - Bernama

Foiled in Setia Alam: Snatch thief caught after botched necklace grab
SHAH ALAM, Aug 5 — A man's attempt to snatch a necklace from a local in Setia Alam was thwarted when bystanders caught him yesterday evening. Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident occurred at 7.07pm when the 37-year-old victim was heading to his car. The suspect, riding a motorcycle, tried to pull off the victim's necklace, but the victim fought back quickly. 'The suspect lost control and fell from his motorcycle. He tried to escape but was caught by nearby bystanders. 'Police later confirmed that the suspect, aged 30, owned the motorcycle but had used a fake licence plate. He is now under remand until August 7,' he said in a statement. Mohd Iqbal urged the public to remain alert and avoid being alone in isolated areas to reduce the risk of crime.
