Woman fined for sexual misconduct in South Korea after pulling down colleague's trousers
On Saturday, the Chuncheon District Court ordered the woman to pay a fine of 2.8 million won (US$2,000) and undergo eight hours of sexual violence prevention education, according to The Korea Herald newspaper.
The woman had claimed she had intended to play a practical joke – commonly known as 'pantsing' – on a male colleague in his twenties when she pulled down his trousers, and his underwear by accident, at a restaurant kitchen in a Wonju, Gangwon province, on October 3 last year.
However, prosecutors found that she had sexually humiliated the man and charged her with an indecent act by compulsion.
The judge later dismissed her claim that she meant it as a joke. In sentencing, however, the court took into account the fact that the woman had no criminal record and was remorseful. She had knelt down and apologised to both the victim and his parents.
In Confucian South Korean society, men are expected to stay strong and silent, so male victims tend to choose not to come forward.
However, a government survey released on Monday showed that men do face sexual harassment at work too, Yonhap news agency reported.

Jailing of South Korea's Kim Keon-hee reveals fresh bribery claims over US$40,000 watch
Advertisement After meeting her for more than two hours on Wednesday, one of her lawyers said Kim had 'not eaten a single meal' since being detained the previous afternoon, adding 'her health condition is currently poor'. Despite this, detention centre officials said she would appear before prosecutors on Thursday for her first interrogation since being jailed. Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki's team has opened a formal investigation into claims that in September 2022, just four months after Yoon took office, a businessman surnamed Seo bought a Vacheron Constantin 'Historiques American 1921' luxury watch on behalf of Kim. Kim Keon-hee's arrest: how a lie about a diamond pendant put her behind bars
A diamond pendant worth tens of thousands of dollars, once worn by former South Korean first lady Kim Keon-hee on an official trip, has become the unlikely catalyst for her fall from grace. The luxury item, and its meticulously crafted fake, are now at the centre of a criminal case that saw Kim detained late on Tuesday pending trial, accused of deception, obstruction and a decade-long pattern of alleged wrongdoing. Investigators say Kim lied about the pendant's origin, staged a cover-up and stonewalled during questioning, triggering the court's decision to have her thrown in jail. For Kim, who faces prison life and a storm of criminal charges, that diamond pendant has become a symbol of her transformation from high society to low life. Immediately after the Seoul Central District Court approved prosecutors' request to remand her, the 52-year-old was taken to the Seoul Nambu Detention Centre.
