Scientists are developing an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to count barn owl chicks by the sound of their calls to avoid disturbing their nests.
PhD student Kavisha Jayathunge, at Bournemouth University, is leading the project to prevent the young birds from being affected by the installation of video cameras to monitor them.
He is working with biologist-turned-electronics engineer Brian Cresswell to create the computer model which can calculate the number of owls by being able to distinguish their individual calls.

Mr Jayathunge said: 'We're using AI to count baby barn owls by sound instead of disturbing them in their nests with video cameras.

He explained the AI technology would be able to identify distinctions in sounds made by each baby owl which would be indistinguishable to the human ear.
It would pick out the differences in frequency which would indicate the number of birds, as well as each individual bird's identity.
He added: 'Bringing AI and ecology together in such a positive way is a great example of how this technology can be used for good.'
Mr Cresswell, who has helped test the technology on nest boxes in north Dorset, said: 'This basic data is important for monitoring breeding success of barn owls, which can vary greatly between years and breeding sites.
'The AI model is also a great research tool to study the behaviour of young owls and the purpose of their hissing, which is believed to be a means to negotiate who will get fed at the next food delivery by their parents.
'There may also be potential for the hissing analyses to determine how hungry the owlets are, which again is important data for monitoring breeding success.'

Mr Jayathunge said the long-term aim of the project was to develop the technology so volunteers and conservationists would be able to capture the sounds of hissing owlets at their nests.
He explained that barn owl hissing was loud so audio recorders could be placed away from the nests to help abide by strict protocols which protect barn owls and their nests under Schedule One of the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
He added: 'It has great potential for citizen science as it doesn't require expensive and specialist equipment – anyone could gather recordings and send them for analysis.
'By making barn owl nest monitoring more scalable and less invasive, we hope this project can contribute to better long-term outcomes for the species.'

Cave discovery reveals oldest community of animals living in European Arctic

The remains of 46 types of mammals, fish and birds, dating back more than 10,000 years have been found in a cave in northern Norway providing the oldest example of an animal community living in the European Arctic region. The discovery, which includes polar bear, walrus, bowhead whale and Atlantic puffin, provides 'a rare snapshot of a vanished Arctic world', according to scientists. Also found were the remains of collared lemmings which are now extinct in Europe and had not been found in Scandinavia before. The team say the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), will help show how wildlife has responded to dramatic climate shifts in the past as the animal community dates to a warmer period of the ice age. Sam Walker, of Bournemouth University, said: 'These discoveries provide a rare snapshot of a vanished Arctic world. They also underscore how vulnerable cold-adapted species can be under changing climate conditions, which can help us to understand their resilience and extinction risk in the present.' The remains were found in the Arne Qvamgrotta cave which was first discovered in the 1990s when a local mining industry built a tunnel through the nearby mountain. But it was large excavations carried out in 2021 and 2022 which led to the discovery of the animals which also included common eider, rock ptarmigan and Atlantic cod. Picture: Trond Klungseth Lodoen/Bournemouth University/PA Wire Professor Sanne Boessenkool, of the University of Oslo, said: 'We have very little evidence of what Arctic life was like in this period because of the lack of preserved remains over 10,000 years old. 'The cave has now revealed a diverse mix of animals in a coastal ecosystem representing both the marine and the terrestrial environment.' The researchers state that the variety of animals including migratory reindeer suggest the habitat would have been mostly ice-free at the time and the presence of freshwater fish meant there would have been lakes and rivers within tundra. There would also have been sea ice for the bowhead whales and walruses, although this would have been seasonal as the harbour porpoises found are known to avoid ice, the scientists say. The study suggests that although the animals had managed to colonise the region after the glaciers melted, their whole populations had died out as they had been unable to migrate when the ice returned. Dr Walker said: 'This highlights how cold-adapted species struggle to adapt to major climatic events. 'This has a direct link to the challenges they are facing in the Arctic today as the climate warms at a rapid pace. 'The habitats these animals in the region live in today are much more fractured than 75,000 years ago, so it is even harder for animal populations to move and adapt.' Prof Boessenkool added: 'It is also important to note that this was a shift to a colder, not a period of warming that we are facing today. 'And these are cold-adapted species, so if they struggled to cope with colder periods in the past, it will be even harder for these species to adapt to a warming climate.'

One exercise ‘better than physio' for people with common issue

A new study suggests that one type of exercise may offer greater benefits than traditional physiotherapy for individuals with a common condition. According to researchers, weekly group spin classes could also be more cost-effective for the NHS and help alleviate long waits for physiotherapy. Hip osteoarthritis, which affects around 3.2 million people in the UK, occurs when the cartilage in the hip deteriorates, leading to pain and reduced mobility. In the study, experts from Bournemouth University and University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) assessed standard physiotherapy against an eight-week programme called Chain (Cycling Against Hip Pain), which combines exercise and education. The research, published in The Lancet Rheumatology, involved 211 participants split roughly evenly between the two treatment groups. Participants in the Chain programme attended weekly 30-minute educational sessions with a physiotherapist, followed by a 30-minute static cycling session led by a gym instructor. Findings revealed that those who completed the cycling classes experienced a 'statistically significant improvement in patient-reported function after treatment'. According to the researchers, the intervention 'showed superior outcomes compared with usual physiotherapy care, and the feasibility of delivering a low-cost, community-based intervention within the NHS was shown'. They noted, however, that the 'longer-term benefits and broader generalisability warrant further investigation'. Professor Tom Wainwright, an orthopaedics expert at Bournemouth University and physiotherapist at UHD, said: 'For the time it takes to treat one patient using standard physiotherapy, we can treat multiple patients in a group session and provide them with better outcomes. 'This has proved to be more cost-effective than standard treatment and so we hope this will contribute to reducing NHS waiting times for physiotherapy treatment in the future.' (Image: Getty) Professor Rob Middleton, an orthopaedic surgeon at UHD and fellow Bournemouth University academic, added: 'Hip replacements cost the NHS over £6,000 per patient, so avoiding surgery for hip problems reduces the burden on the NHS, saves money, and provides better outcomes for patients. 'Now with this new study we can also see the potential for static cycling to save further money for the NHS by bringing down waiting lists for physiotherapy.' Dr Peter Wilson, chief medical officer at UHD, commented: 'We are an ageing population and increasingly we are seeing more patients with osteoarthritis that need either surgery or physiotherapy. Finding alternative ways to treat these patients could help reduce waiting times and the financial demand on NHS services.' Launched in 2013, the Chain programme currently accepts patients referred to UHD by their GP. To expand accessibility, Bournemouth University has developed a virtual version through its educational app, allowing patients to participate remotely from home or at their local gym.
