Yankees hold moment of silence before first pitch against Rays in honor of fallen NYPD officer
"Before tonight's game, we held a moment of silence in memoriam of NYPD Police Officer Didarul Islam, who was tragically killed in the midtown shooting yesterday," the Yankees wrote on X.
An office building was the site of a mass shooting that left five dead, including Didarul, when a gunman unleashed fire inside before taking his own life.
The high-rise office tower is located on 52nd Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan, a borough that neighbors the Bronx, the home of Yankee Stadium.
"The entire Yankees organization sends its condolences to his family as well as to the families of the other victims of this senseless act of violence," the Yankees statement concluded.
The Yankees trailed the Rays 3-0 in the third inning Tuesday night.
Flags at government buildings across the city were placed at half-staff Tuesday in honor of Islam, New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed.
The building where the shooting took place houses the NFL's headquarters.
In a memo obtained by Fox News Digital, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed at least one NFL employee was "seriously injured" but was listed in stable condition.
Goodell also thanked Islam for his sacrifice.
"We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others," the memo said.
The 36-year-old had been on the force four years before he was gunned down Monday evening. He was a married father to two young boys, and his wife is pregnant with their third child, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
Islam was assigned to the NYPD's 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He was one of two uniformed officers in the Park Avenue building when the shooting occurred.
The NYPD said Islam "represented the very best of our department."
"He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today," the NYPD added. "We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dismisses Micah Parsons' trade request as negotiation talk
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not intend to trade Micah Parsons after the star defensive end said he wants to leave the team amid a breakdown in negotiating a contract extension. 'Surely you guys have been around this stuff and know how to recognize negotiation talk, that type of thing. And so that's where I put that,' Jones said after practice Saturday, one day after Parsons posted on social media to request a trade. No stranger to public and prolonged disputes with standout players, Jones insisted the standoff with Parsons is no different than past situations ranging from alternating approaches by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb last year to the 1993 in-season holdout by running back Emmitt Smith. 'Well, it's just that you've seen it so often, and you've seen it with other clubs. You go through the process. It's a highly sensitive time when you're guaranteeing somebody almost $200 million, that's sensitive stuff,' Jones said. Parsons remains at training camp, where he has yet to practice because of a back injury. He did not speak to reporters, leaving the field at the same time as Jones was fielding questions for more than 15 minutes. Parsons is going into the final season of his five-year rookie contract and is seeking a new deal that would almost certainly make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history. He could be franchise tagged in 2026 without a contract extension. A first-round draft pick in 2021, Parsons has at least 12 sacks in each of his four seasons with the Cowboys and 52 1/2 for his career. Cowboys' Jerry Jones has message for fans following Micah Parsons stunning trade request
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke for the first time since superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons requested a trade on Saturday. Jones, 82, had a message for fans in wake of Parsons' trade request. "I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over this," Jones said, via the Star-Telegram. Jones said he thinks the "world of" Parsons and said his trade request is just part of negotiations. Parsons announced his trade request on social media on Friday, and in his post, Parsons said he did everything to show he wanted to stay with the Cowboys. "Yes I wanted to be here. I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboy and wear the star on my helmet. I wanted to play in front of the best fans in sports and make this Americas [sic] team once again. The team my pops and I grew up cheering for way up in Harrisburg, PA. Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here," Parsons wrote in his post. "I no longer want to held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me. I had purposely stayed quiet in hopes of getting something done." Parsons said he wanted to get a contract extension after his third season, when he was first eligible for such a deal, but the team had no interest. Parsons said he's "OK with that" and turned his attention to the 2024 season. However, once again, Parsons said there has been "radio silence" from the Cowboys in regard to any potential contract extension after last season. "Yet still not a call email or text to my agent about starting a negotiation. Up to today, the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about starting a negotiation. Not one demand has been made by my agent about money years or anything else," Parsons wrote. "I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally," Parsons concluded his post. Parsons has been one of the premier pass-rushers since being selected with 12th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Penn State. Parsons has made the Pro Bowl in all four seasons of his career. In 63 career games, Parsons has 52.5 sacks with 172 solo tackles and nine forced fumbles. Last season, Parsons had 12 sacks in 13 games. While Jones might tell fans not to lose sleep over Parsons' trade request, it would be hard to blame them if they did.
