Tabung Haji rolls out digital tablets for pilgrim health checks in Makkah under Ziarah Rahmah programme

Malay Mail11-05-2025

MAKKAH, May 11 — The healthcare services for Malaysian pilgrims in the Holy Land saw a significant milestone this Haj season as the Public Health Unit of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) utilised digital tablets in implementing the Ziarah Rahmah (visit to pilgrims) programme at every maktab (residential facility) it operates here.
TH Public Health Unit Operations Coordinator Dr Abdullah Husam A Shukor said the use of this technology, introduced for the first time this Haj season, enables health visits from room to room to be carried out more swiftly, systematically and comprehensively.
'This year, TH has equipped its personnel with digital tablets complete with SIM cards and internet access. Now, when healthcare personnel visit (Malaysian) pilgrims, we can directly access their health information online via the system.
'Through the use of these tablets, healthcare personnel can access the Pre-Haj Health Screening Reports within the Ministry of Health's MyVAS system through the SIHAT system (a health information system developed by TH for medical personnel in the Holy Land),' he said when met by the Malaysian media here.
Dr Abdullah Husam said this new approach marks a significant improvement compared to the previous manual method, which involved recording treatment information in the Pilgrims' Health Record Book during past Haj seasons.
He said the facility allows personnel to review the pilgrims' medical history, including disease status, medications taken, and if there is a need for further treatment more quickly and accurately.
'This digital transformation makes our work more efficient. Personnel can immediately determine the health status of a pilgrim, whether in the green (healthy), yellow (at risk), or red (chronic illness) category, thereby assisting in prioritising visits and early intervention,' he said.
Dr Abdullah Husam said during Ziarah Rahmah, TH healthcare personnel also provide health education, particularly on heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and the risk of respiratory infections.
'Pilgrims are also advised to drink at least two litres of water daily and to avoid exposure to intense heat, especially from noon to Asar. They are also encouraged to wear hats, use umbrellas, and wear face masks in crowded areas, including at the Grand Mosque,' he said.
Apart from general health, Dr Abdullah Husam said Ziarah Rahmah also helps healthcare personnel detect unreported illnesses, including eye conditions and minor wounds.
'Pilgrims will also be assisted in obtaining medication if their supply is insufficient, and if necessary, they will be referred to the nearest TH clinic — for example, pilgrims staying at the Abraj Al Janadriyah Hotel will be referred to the clinic on the third floor,' he said. — Bernama

Melaka killings show need for early mental health intervention in youths, says Nancy Shukri

KUCHING, June 15 — The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) is taking a more aggressive stance in tackling youth mental health issues by rolling out a series of early intervention initiatives, including mobile counselling services and local community support centres. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry is deeply concerned about the rising incidence of mental health struggles among young people and is committed to providing accessible support through programmes that involve collaboration with parents, schools and community organisations. 'One of our key efforts is deploying counselling buses to targeted areas, making it easier for youths to access psychological support. Many are unaware that they are struggling until they are given an outlet, for example, through art therapy like drawing, which can reveal suppressed emotional distress,' she said. Speaking at a press conference after officiating the Kem Kapten Keluarga (Family Captain Camp) in Santubong here today, Nancy stressed that recent tragedies involving adolescents underscore the urgent need for early intervention. She cited a recent case in Melaka where a Form Five student allegedly killed his mother and elder brother. In addition to supporting youth, the ministry is promoting healthier family dynamics through initiatives such as 'second honeymoon' programmes for married couples and parenting awareness sessions for new parents, she said. The family camp, held in conjunction with the National Father's Day celebration, was organised by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) and attended by LPPKN chairperson Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim. Nancy also urged the public to overcome stigma around mental health and to speak up or seek help when in need. 'In Sarawak, for example, there are many forms of support available for students and communities. What matters most is to talk, whether it is with a friend, a relative or someone you trust,' she said. In her speech at the event, Nancy highlighted the growing demands placed on fathers in today's fast-paced society, where emotional, intellectual and social involvement is expected alongside traditional roles. Quoting findings from the 2024 Father's Day Public Opinion Survey, she noted that nine out of ten fathers admitted that parenting today is far more challenging than in previous generations. 'The top concerns among fathers are the high cost of living at 84.4 per cent, and the struggle to maintain work-life balance, 72.9 per cent,' she added. — Bernama

Malaysian Haj pilgrim dies of heart attack in Mecca, bringing total deaths to 15, says Islamic affairs minister

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Another haj pilgrim from Malaysia has died in the holy city of Makkah, bringing the total number of deaths this haj season to 15. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said Nor Azamuddin Ahmad, 56, from group KT073, breathed his last at 5.10pm local time yesterday following a heart attack. He said the pilgrim had been staying at the Marsa Al Jariah Building, Maktab 81 (PJH-Mahabbateen), and was accompanied by his wife, Rozina Saad, while in the holy land. 'Tabung Haji has completed the death verification process and informed the family in Malaysia of his passing. All matters related to the funeral will be handled by haj officials, insya-Allah,' he said in a Facebook post today. He also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed that they be granted strength and patience in facing this test.
