Spartans slide outside top 20 in latest Jon Rothstein early preseason rankings
Michigan State basketball has slid outside of the top 20 in the latest early preseason rankings from one notable college basketball analyst.
Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports released an updated batch of preseason rankings for next year on Thursday, which saw the Spartans land just outside the top 20. Rothstein had Michigan State listed at No. 21 in his updated rankings.
Among Big Ten teams, Rothstein had Michigan State come in at No. 5. The Spartans were behind the following Big Ten teams: Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5), UCLA (No. 6) and Oregon (No. 20). Rothstein's rankings -- which goes up to 45 teams -- also included the following teams from the Big Ten behind the Spartans: Illinois (No. 22), Wisconsin (No. 23), Ohio State (No. 26), USC (No. 32), Maryland (No. 34) and Nebraska (No. 40).
Based on Rothstein's rankings, it seems clear he has three teams in the top tier of the Big Ten: Purdue, Michigan and UCLA. After that, though, its a big group of teams that could battle it out to join that top tier, including Michigan State.

They navigated the regular season, going undefeated through their first year in the Big Ten Conference after moving from the Pac-12. Their dominance landed them the No. 1 overall pick in the College Football Playoff. However, the extra time off may have been detrimental, as they went from December 7, until New Year's Day without a game after four months playing essentially every week and fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were coming off a win over Tennessee. Former Oregon QB turning heads in NFL OTAs Dillon Gabriel was the leader of the high-flying Oregon offense and was eventually selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. However, a different former Ducks quarterback has been turning heads in NFL OTAs. Advertisement According to FOX 8 New Orleans' Sean Fazende, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has made an impression. "Shough looks very comfortable with vertical routes & out-breaking patterns," Fazende said on "His best throw may have been an incompletion where he rolled to his left and threw off platform to the sideline. Right now, not quite as comfortable in intermediate middle of field." Shough spent three seasons with the Ducks. In his first two, he was backing up Justin Herbert before being handed the reins. He eventually transferred to Texas Tech and then Louisville before the Saints took him in the second round. Oklahoma beats North Carolina to force winner-take-all game Monday The UNC baseball team faces a must-win game on Monday. The North Carolina Tar Heels' baseball program will be playing for its season on Monday in Chapel Hill. After entering Sunday's regional final with a 2-0 record, fresh off a big win over Oklahoma, the Tar Heels now face a do-or-die deciding game on Monday after falling to the Sooners 9-5 on Sunday night. North Carolina fell behind in the bottom of the third when Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead. They did battle back to tie the game with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Sooners answered back with a run of their own. The Tar Heels then took the lead in the top of the fifth on a Gavin Gallaher two-out double that plated two runs and gave UNC the 3-2 advantage. It was short lived, however. A few walks and then an error allowed Oklahoma to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Sooners didn't look back, grabbing the lead for good. The Sooners got a two-run home run, a double and a single to plate five in that inning, which was the backbreaker for the Tar Heels. Although UNC answered back with two runs in the top of the seventh, the Sooners plated one run in the seventh and eighth innings. They also kept UNC scoreless in the eighth after the Tar Heels loaded the bases with no outs, threatening to tie or take the lead. UNC's pitching struggled, walking nine batters as the Tar Heels used starter Aidan Haugh and five relievers throughout the game. Haugh gave up just the one earned run in 3.2 innings pitched. The Tar Heels' lineup also struggled as the two through six hitters had just four hits with Gallaher having three of those hits. The loss now forces the winner-take-all game on Monday in Chapel Hill with the winner punching their ticket to the super regional. Due to NCAA rules, Oklahoma will be designated as the home team.
