Philadelphia's Broad Street Run, Cinco de Mayo, Kendrick Lamar and SZA, other things to do this weekend

CBS News02-05-2025
Whether you're lacing up your sneakers, dusting off your lightsaber or just in it for the tacos, this weekend in Philly is coming in hot. The big-ticket events include the Broad Street Run on Sunday morning and a Monday night set from Kendrick Lamar and SZA in South Philly. Now, add in that Star Wars Day (by the way – May the fourth be with you) is also on Sunday, and Cinco de Mayo falls on Monday, and you've got yourself a weekend for the ages.
We've got you covered on what not to miss. Here's our weekend guide.
Independence Blue Cross Broad Street
According to the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run's website, more than 40,000 runners are expected to flood Broad Street at sunrise on Sunday for the nation's largest 10-mile road race. While it's too late to sign up to run, you can join the fun by cheering for runners as they make their way down Broad Street. Spectators will line sidewalks, porches and overpasses to cheer as runners — elite athletes, first-timers and costumed joggers alike — pass by.
The herculean course begins right outside Central High School and barrels straight through the heart of the city, ending at the Navy Yard. This year, family and friends can track runners' progress in real time.
The USA Track & Field-sanctioned event kicks off at 7 a.m., and city officials warn of major road closures and SEPTA detours starting early that morning.
Kendrick Lamar and SZA's Grand National Tour at the Linc
Coming off of what some would call an incredible run after the Super Bowl halftime show, Kendrick and SZA will be in Philadelphia for the Grand National Tour at Lincoln Financial Field.
The former labelmates are coheadlining the stadium tour at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 5, also known as Cinco de Mayo.
Tickets range from $154 to over $607, the fees aren't included.
Lamar and SZA also have more Grammys under their belts, with Lamar sweeping all five categories, including Record and Song of the Year for "Not Like Us." SZA won her fifth Grammy for Best R&B song with "Saturn."
Lamar also leads the most nominations for the 2025 American Music Awards with 10.
Not able to go to the show? You can still be part of the experience with the SZA's NOT BEAUTY pop-up. The pop-up experience will debut three signature lip glosses and the pop-up is only at the U.S. dates of the Grand National Tour.
Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival 2025
Rittenhouse Square turns into a car-free playground for the annual Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival from noon to 5 p.m. — rain or shine.
Walnut Street, from 15th to 19th streets, and parts of 18th Street will close to traffic, allowing visitors to stroll, shop and sample food from some of the city's top restaurants, including The Dandelion Pub, Butcher and Singer, and a.bar.
Expect live music, sidewalk dining, and a taste of what the organizers call "accessible luxury" in one of Philly's most stylish neighborhoods.
Mt. Airy Day
If you live in the Mt. Airy neighborhood, you already know what's happening this weekend. Mt. Airy Day is set to rock Germantown Avenue this Saturday, with a raindate of Sunday.
The street festival was originally intended to unite East and West Mt. Airy residents on both sides of Germantown Avenue. The historic festival continues to be a beacon of unity and neighborhood celebration for residents and local businesses. This year's entertainment lineup includes DJ Big Cuz, performances by StoneAge, Yoni & Friends, Sons of the 215, Elle Gyandoh & The John Doe Band, JustJonavin and Friends, Expressions of Soul and Alfie Polite Trio. Food vendors and over 100 non-food vendors will be available on-site for guests to peruse.
Mt. Airy Day kicks off on Germantown Avenue from Johnson to Upsal streets at 11 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m.
Darkness Rises, a Star Wars-themed haunted house in Manayunk
A power once thought to be galaxies away just got a whole lot closer. To kick off Star Wars Day on May 4, the Lincoln Mill Haunted House in Manayunk transforms into a haunted galaxy with "Darkness Rises," a Star Wars-themed haunted house.
For one night only, navigate a twisted journey through the Force — but don't expect Jedi heroics to save you here. Doors open at 7 p.m.
General admission tickets are $32, while VIP admission offers skip-the-line access at $47.
The haunted house runs until 9:15 p.m.
Kristin Chenoweth with the Philadelphia Orchestra
Tony and Emmy-award winning singer and actress, Kristin Chenoweth, is bringing her Broadway-level talents to the Kimmel Center this Saturday night. The original Glinda, along with her signature sparkle, will grace the stage with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Marian Anderson Hall on Saturday, starting at 7 p.m.
Secure your tickets to see this theater favorite. Prices start at $69.
String Band Parade down Haddon Ave.
The streets of Haddon Township will look like ones of Philadelphia this Sunday as the third annual String Band Parade marches its way into South Jersey. Fans of the iconic New Year's Day Mummers Parade will be pleased as the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association is set to once again fill the streets with great joy and music. The parade will feature food vendors, games and other fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.
The String Band Parade down Haddon Ave. starts at Crystal Lake Avenue and ends at Haddon Square and will run from 1-3 p.m. Here's a look at last year's celebration!
Made in Philadelphia Marketplace at Dilworth Park
Nothing works up an appetite for shopping like a nice stroll through Center City. The Philadelphia Marketplace kicks off Friday, bringing more than 20 vendors to Dilworth Park every Friday and Saturday through June 28.
This year, shoppers can browse booths selling everything from vintage clothing and accessories to handmade jewelry and collectibles.
The Marketplace will also celebrate the classics and all things retro with the "Vintage Marketplace" weekend takeover from May 30-31 and once again on June 27-28.
Once you've put your wallet away, head over to the Rothman Orthopaedics Roller Rink, which will be open during marketplace hours, Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m.
Cinco de Mayo Block Party at El Chingón
If you're still standing by Sunday afternoon, Cinco de Mayo celebrations are expected to spill into streets, patios and beer gardens across the city, with custom martini options and countless other specials.
In South Philly, El Chingón, a 2024 James Beard Award finalist, throws its third annual block party from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The fiesta promises food, "killer margs," and live entertainment.
BADBADNOTGOOD at Franklin Music Hall
The Canadian jazz ensemble will be bringing all the vibes this weekend in Philadelphia before the Cinco de Mayo festivities take over.
BADBADNOTGOOD will be at the Franklin Music Hall, formerly known as the Electric Factory, for The Mid Spiral Tour.
They are also bringing along soulstress Baby Rose. They share an EP called "Slow Burn" that was released in April 2024.
The doors at the venue on North 7th Street open at 7 p.m., and the show is expected to start at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $35 for general admission, with fees not yet included.

Pat McGrath Labs' New Products Are Secretly Tested On Runways And Red Carpets Before They Launch: ‘They Have To Solve An Unmet Need'

The world was none the wiser, but Pat McGrath Labs' latest two products—both out as of August 14—secretly debuted on the runway, in a music video, on a British Vogue cover and at the Super Bowl before the general public even knew they existed. This is a key strategy of legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, she tells me. The products held up 'flawlessly,' she says, at events like the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show, on Addison Rae in Sombr's new '12 to 12' music video, on Bella Hadid's British Vogue cover and on SZA at the Super Bowl, for example. 'I never release anything I haven't tested on real faces in real time—red carpets, runways, flashbulbs, all-night affairs,' McGrath says. 'The spray and powder worked in every condition. Seamless wear, luminous blur, no touchups needed. They proved they belong on every stage and in every kit.' Testing the products on real people before they go mass market is 'the whole reason I started Pat McGrath Labs,' she tells me. 'I wanted to make products that solved challenges I faced as a backstage makeup artist on shows and shoots. You're working in extreme conditions—bright lights, heat, humidity—and you need the products to perform. And fast! They need to be easy and quick to use. So, when I'm exploring a new product, I'm truly testing them in those conditions—and with everyone in my community—because they have to solve an unmet need.' 'Her heart and soul is in every aspect of it' McGrath—one of the most celebrated makeup artists globally and known worldwide for her porcelain glass skin makeup look—founded Pat McGrath Labs 10 years ago in 2015; it quickly grew to a $1 billion valuation. In May, Louis Vuitton announced that its beauty brand La Beauté Louis Vuitton will launch this fall with McGrath at the helm as creative director, further cementing her place in the industry. 'She is such an active force in every component of what she's selling,' designer Marc Jacobs previously told Allure of McGrath and Pat McGrath Labs. 'There are people who have a name on a cosmetic line who probably have never experienced the formulas. They've never sat down and made a red bluer or more yellow and, hey, more power to them. But Pat is a makeup artist and this is her collection and her heart and soul is in every aspect of it.' Of McGrath's now iconic nickname, 'We've all called her Mother for so long, I can't even remember when that started,' Jacobs said. Robin Givhan, senior critic-at-large at The Washington Post, told Allure of McGrath's approach as a makeup artist, 'I always got the impression that she wasn't aiming for quote-unquote 'beautiful.'' 'I felt like she was aiming to elicit a fuller, richer range of emotions than what had been the norm with beauty,' she added. 'Now it's something we can't live without' Pat McGrath Labs' two newest products are its Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Longwear Setting Spray and its Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Blurring Under-Eye Powder in shades peach and amber. The setting spray, the brand tells me, is designed to deliver a 'soft-focus, blurring effect' that 'enhances radiance and keeps your look fresh.' Calling it a 'finishing touch for your makeup,' the $38 product is infused with antioxidants to help preserve color integrity and is formulated to resist heat, humidity and smudging. Though the brand tells me it lasts for over 16 hours, it can also 'be reapplied throughout the day for an instant boost.' 'What makes this product special is the fusion of hydration and performance,' McGrath tells me. 'It blurs and perfects while resisting heat, humidity and life.' 'I can't say enough good things about this product,' she continues, adding that it 'is MAJOR [signature emphasis hers] and now it's something we can't live without.' The setting spray, McGrath explains, was the final step to ensure that the blurred, soft-focused skin that McGrath as a makeup artist has become known for 'lasts from prep to finish and beyond,' she says. 'What was missing was a skin-loving way to lock it all in,' she adds. 'Every new launch has to honor the legacy of what came before' The Blurring Under-Eye Powder comes in seven shades, with two new shades, peach and amber, made to smooth texture, blur fine lines and pores and illuminate medium to deep complexions. The brand tells me that peach works best with Pat McGrath Labs' concealer shades 20 to 29, and amber works best with concealer shades 29 to 36. The Blurring Under Eye-Powder, which retails for $35, is a hero product, McGrath says, calling it 'an icon that inspired the whole ritual.' 'It's been No. 1 for a reason,' she says, adding that 'it always delivers. I like to call it my bite-sized blur—you can take it on the go.' Peach, McGrath tells me, is perfect for neutralizing blue or purple tones and serves as an instant brightener; amber 'melts beautifully' into deeper skin tones, she continues. 'These shades make the ritual more personalized, more precise and even more inclusive,' McGrath says. Of the two new products, both available now on McGrath says, 'Every new launch has to honor the legacy of what came before, and this one does with brilliance.'

Kendrick Lamar's Streaming Smashes Return — But Which One Is More Impressive?

Kendrick Lamar is one of the top-performing rap artists in America when it comes to sales, as his fans seem much more willing to purchase his music than many other stars in the field. While sales of both his albums and singles play a large role in his continued success, streaming activity may be even more responsible for his presence on the Billboard charts. Several of Lamar's recent smashes return to streaming-only rankings in the United States, and he climbs on multiple tallies dedicated to the consumption metric. '30 for 30" with SZA is Back Two Lamar tracks find their way back to streaming-only tallies this frame. Technically, the higher-rising of the two is '30 for 30.' His tour partner SZA recruited him for the track, which reappears at No. 25 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs tally. 30 weeks into its life on the most competitive of all the streaming rankings that focus on R&B, hip-hop and rap, the cut barely makes it back as it lands in last place. 'Not Like Us' Returns to the Main Streaming Chart 'Not Like Us,' which may go down as Lamar's most famous and celebrated tune, is back on the Streaming Songs chart this week. In its sixty-first frame, the Drake diss tune reappears in last place at No. 50. While that is a much lower position than '30 for 30' manages on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs roster, it may be more impressive that 'Not Like Us' can be found on the Streaming Songs tally. The chart isn't focused on just one or several styles, which makes it that much more competitive. Also, 'Not Like Us' is much older than '30 for 30,' so the fact that it once again ranks as one of the 50-most-played tunes of any style or language throughout the United States is quite the feat. Kendrick Lamar Owns 20% of the Streaming List 'Not Like Us' is one of two tracks by Lamar that appear on the general Streaming Songs roster, as 'Luther,' another duet with SZA, rises two spaces to No. 31. When it comes to the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs tally, however, Lamar is far more successful this time around. He fills five spaces, occupying 20% of the list. His roundup includes 'Luther' with SZA, 'Not Like Us,' 'TV Off' with Lefty Gunplay, 'All the Stars,' yet another smash with SZA, and finally '30 for 30.' Those tracks appear at Nos. 3, 10, 17, 21 and 25, respectively.
