Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro joins Broad Street Run spectators to cheer on first lady, daughter

About 40,000 runners from across the region, including members of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's family, participated in the 46th annual Broad Street Run Sunday morning. The 10-mile race began near Jefferson Einstein Medical Center in North Philadelphia and ended at the Navy Yard, near the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Shapiro and his two sons hung out at the finish line to cheer on first lady Lori Shapiro and their daughter, Sophia Shapiro. "After we got elected governor, Lori said, 'Man, I want to do something different. I want to try something new,' and she got into running!" Shapiro recalled. "A few months later, she said, 'I want to do Broad Street.' I'm like, 'You go! That's awesome!'" Lori and Sophia Shapiro said stopping at every fluid station along the course helped get them to the finish line. "We're feeling great!" Lori Shapiro said. "It was fun! Really fun!" Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro greeted First Lady Lori Shapiro and their daughter Sophia after they ran the 10-mile Broad Street Run. Today @CBSPhiladelphia at 6 pm, we'll tell you some of the reasons that motivated runners to wake up early to run 10 miles! — Brandon Goldner (@GoldnerTV) May 4, 2025 Mark Manila, a Norristown resident, ran down Broad Street to raise money for the American Cancer Society after his mother died five years ago from pancreatic cancer. "This race, really out of all the ones that I've ran, is probably the most special because I really did this one with purpose for her," Manila said. "Five years ago, you know, you didn't think that same way. It's when you lose somebody that, you know, things really change, so I'm just really proud to be running for her and with a purpose, and it's kind of taken on a whole new meaning." This year's race was different because organizers moved the start time up by a half-hour to 7 a.m., but Commissioner Susan Slawson, who runs Philadelphia's Parks and Recreation Department, said the earlier start time didn't stop runners from signing up. "It's one of those races that everyone loves," Slawson said. "We love the fact that people come here to celebrate not just the running, but also Philadelphia."

Anticipation builds for 2025 Broad Street Run as runners picked up their bibs in Philadelphia

Barricades, bleachers and Broad Street Run signage could be seen in South Philadelphia as the anticipation builds for Sunday's big race. While crews made their final preparations, so were the runners who spent part of their day picking up their bibs at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. "Got my number. I'm ready for tomorrow," said John Germer. Janet and Caitlyn Serafin are also ready to go. "I'm so excited," Caitlyn said. The mother and daughter duo will be running in the race for the first time together. And they said it's a moment they will cherish. "And it's something special I get to do with my mom. Not every person I know my age has a mother that can run 10 miles. This is crazy. I love it. I love that I push her and she's able to be pushed," Caitlyn said. Janet added, "Anything I can do, to do, to support her. I am so incredibly proud." Sunday will also mark John Germer's eighth Broad Street Run. "This is probably my favorite race to do," he said. At 56 years old, Germer is proving that age is nothing but a number. "I can still do it. I'll be hurting a couple of days, but I can still do it and it's great to still be able to do it," Germer said. It's a race these runners look forward to every year. And for them, Sunday can't come soon enough.

Pennsylvania teacher grateful to be participating in Broad Street Run 6 months after medical ordeal

For this Glenside teacher, the road to the Broad Street Run was filled with obstacles For this Glenside teacher, the road to the Broad Street Run was filled with obstacles For this Glenside teacher, the road to the Broad Street Run was filled with obstacles A teacher from Glenside, Pennsylvania, is thankful to be back running and preparing for the Broad Street Run, just six months after a scary medical ordeal. "For me, it's definitely a stress reliever," said Brynn Peterson. "Taking in the nature and the beauty of it all." The 24-year-old teacher is training for the Broad Street Run in Wissahickon Park. "A lot of doctors told me it was going to be years until I could run again," she said. In October, she was training for the Philadelphia Marathon, running 60 miles a week, when she started having chest pain and was suddenly exhausted. "Everyone tells you that you're tired during marathon training, that your body hurts, so I just thought my body is tired," Peterson said. She finally got herself to Temple University Hospital, where doctors discovered dozens of blood clots in her lungs. "I was about a week away from a heart attack, they said if I hadn't come into the hospital," Peterson said. CBS Philadelphia She found out she has a genetic predisposition and was effectively treated with blood thinners. "Blood clot – we call it a silent killer, because it's way more prevalent than we think," said Dr. Parth Rali, who works at Temple University Hospital. "Every five minutes, there is one person in the United States who dies of a blood clot." Dr. Rali, a pulmonologist, said blood clots can be caused by a number of different things, including being dehydrated – something that can happen to runners if they're not careful. "If you're not keeping up with hydration, what happens is that your blood becomes thick and that puts you at the risk of forming the blood clots," he said. Now that she's cleared to run again, Peterson said she learned the importance of seeing a doctor when something doesn't feel right, and she's excited for Broad Street. "I'll just be happy to finish it with a smile on my face, but the athlete in me does want to go under 66 minutes," Peterson said. No matter your pace, CBS News Philadelphia is wishing everyone good luck!
