The Washington Commanders faced the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Friday in their first preseason game of 2025. To say it didn't go well for the Commanders is an understatement, as they walked away with their tails between their legs after suffering a 48-18 loss. Head coach Dan Quinn addressed the media after the game, and he appeared frustrated. "Alright, well, what I told the team was that there were some hard lessons tonight," Quinn said. "We have really high standards, and I thought, man, we missed them. We missed them tonight by a lot in all three phases. So, what I'm looking for over the next 10 days is really good improvement." The majority of the starters sat out on Friday, and Quinn acknowledged that the team has made strides and there are still evaluations to take place. He made sure to mention three players who did things he liked, though. "There were some things early that I saw that I liked. Saw some from (Josh) Conerly, (Trey) Amos, (Jer'Zhan) Newton for a couple of early that I saw. Then, past that, you know I ate the score, but when we look at the evaluation, there are still things to get from it, and I expect us to improve a good bit." There are fewer than 20 days until roster cuts, so if any of these players want a shot at making the roster, they should do everything in their power to improve as much as they can over the next two weeks. Bueckers was drafted by the Wings with the No. 1 overall pick and has since made an immediate impact, seemingly setting herself up to win the Rookie of the Year award. She's been a star for Dallas, but the Wings stand 12th in the WNBA standings with an 8-22 record. On Thursday, the Wings were at practice, preparing for a matchup against the New York Liberty. Dallas will be playing New York for the second time in four days when they face off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday. Unfortunately for Dallas, it may be playing without Bueckers. According to Joey Mistretta, Bueckers did not practice one day prior to the team's matchup against New York, one of the best teams in the league. Bueckers has been working through back pains. She previously mentioned that she's hoping it will not interfere with her ability to play, and she is considered day-to-day, per Khristina Williams. Bueckers played in the team's most recent game against New York. She finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Throughout her rookie season in the WNBA, Bueckers has posted 18.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game for the Wings. Harris and Waldrep lead Braves past Marlins 7-1 as female umpire makes history
ATLANTA (AP) — Michael Harris II hit a 3-run homer, rookie Hurston Waldrep threw six strong innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-1 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader that featured some Major League Baseball history. Jen Pawol became the first female umpire in a Major League game, working first base. She is scheduled to be at third base in the second game of the doubleheader and behind home plate in the series finale Sunday. Waldrep (2-0), in just his second start this season, allowed four hits, one walk and one run. He struck out six. He has given up two runs in 11 2/3 innings in his two starts. Harris was 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. His three-run home run in the seventh inning was his 11th. Drake Baldwin was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Ozzie Albies and Eli White had RBIs in the second inning that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead. Rookie Ryan Gusto (7-5) gave up three runs in six innings in his Marlins debut. He was acquired from the Astros on July 31. Xavier Edwards knocked in the lone Marlins run with a single in the sixth inning. Key moment Braves left fielder Jurickson Profar robbed Agustín Ramírez of a home run in the fourth inning with a leaping catch, reaching over the wall in front of the Marlins' bullpen. Waldrep put both hands on his head when he realized Profar made the catch. Key stat The Marlins started six rookies in the batting order, plus a rookie starting pitcher in Gusto. Up next For the second game of the split doubleheader, Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (6-10, 6.44) will face Braves newcomer Erick Fedde (3-12, 5.32).
