"Was this helicopter even capable of carrying seven people?" Congress' Pramod Tiwari on Uttarakhand chopper crash
He also noted that the rail incidents are 'increasing' and flight accidents are 'deeply hurting' us. The veteran Congress leader asked a few questions, including the carrying capacity of the helicopter at the time of the incident on Sunday morning.
Tiwari told ANI, '... But there are a few questions -- rail accidents are increasing, and flight accidents are deeply hurting us. We are still trying to cope with the Ahmedabad plane crash. Recently, a helicopter had to make an emergency landing, and now this incident has happened. I solely blame privatisation. They focus less on safety and more on how much profit can be made. Was this helicopter even capable of carrying seven people at a time? I don't think the helicopters that operate there can carry that many passengers...'
Earlier this morning, seven people, including the pilot on board a helicopter were killed after the chopper crashed near the forested area of Gaurikund in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said.
The Aryan Aviation Helicopter was flying to Guptkashi from the Kedarnath Dham when it crashed at 5:30 am today.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a virtual high-level meeting with senior officials from the CM residence after the helicopter crash. Following the incident, the Chief Minister informed that the Helicopter services will not run for the next two days.
The deceased have been identified as Captain Rajbir Singh Chauhan (39), resident of Jaipur, Vikram Rawat (47) a Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee representative and resident of Rasi, Vinod Devi (66), resident of Uttar Pradesh, Trishti Singh (19), resident of Uttar Pradesh, Rajkumar Suresh Jaiswal (41), resident of Gujarat, Shraddha Rajkumar Jaiswal and Kashi (2), resident of Maharashtra.
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched under the direction of SDRF Commander Arpan Yadav. The incident spot was located in a very inaccessible and dense forest area, where a fast-paced and coordinated rescue operation was carried out by the joint teams of SDRF, NDRF, and local police.
Rescue teams worked in inclement weather to retrieve the bodies of the deceased. (ANI)

INDIA bloc V-P nominee B. Sudershan Reddy files nomination
INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential nominee and former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy filed his nomination on Thursday (August 21, 2025) in the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. NCP (SCP) chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and several other leaders of the alliance were also present. Earlier, Reddy expressed hope of receiving support across party lines, framing the election as a contest of ideology rather than numbers. 'Numbers matter continues... Of course, I am hopeful. Since I don't belong to any political party, I believe everyone would support me... I made it very clear yesterday. It is the battle of ideology,' Mr. Reddy told reporters before leaving to file his nomination papers. 'The program is simple, I am going to the Returning Officer to submit my nomination paper,' he added. The Election Commission had earlier announced that polling for the Vice Presidential election would take place on September 9, with counting to take place the same day. The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25. The Vice Presidential post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on July 21, citing health reasons. The V-P is elected by an electoral college, which consists of MPs from both houses of Parliament. The elections of the Vice President are governed by the provisions under Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution. The Election Commission notifies the VP polls by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952. As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution of India, the election of the Vice President shall be held by the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote, and the voting at such election shall be by secret ballot. The post of Vice President fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health reasons.

Tharoor differs with Cong on Bill removing PM, CMs
New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday voiced support for laying down rules to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, or ministers of states and union territories from their posts if they are arrested on serious criminal charges. Taking a slightly different stance from his party colleagues on the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, which seeks to lay down said rules, Tharoor mentioned that while he does not know enough about the bills tabled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, 'on the face of it,' it is 'reasonable' that anyone doing wrong things should not be allowed to hold a political office in the country. 'As far as I am concerned, I don't know those Bills well enough to give you a comment. On the face of it, it seems reasonable that anyone who does anything wrong should be liable to punishment and should not be holding a high constitutional office or a political office. I think that makes sense,' Tharoor told ANI at Parliament premises. The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, seeks to remove a Central or State Minister who is facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and has been detained for at least 30 days. The Bill was tabled by Union Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. However, Tharoor's remarks differ from the party's leadership, who has termed the bills as 'unconstitutional' and 'draconian.' Party leader Priyanka Gandhi, taking strong exception to the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill said earlier today that the bill being touted as an anti-corruption measure is just a 'veil over the eyes of people,' claiming that a Chief Minister could be arrested on fabricated charges and be removed from their post after 30 days without a conviction if the bill is passed.

EAM Jaishankar to meet Russian counterpart Lavrov amid US sanctions threat
External affairs minister S Jaishankar is set to meet his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday to review bilateral relations against the backdrop of US threats of sanctions over India-Russia energy trade and to prepare for President Vladimir Putin's planned visit to India for an annual summit. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar meets Russian FM Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit 2025. (ANI photo) Jaishankar travelled to Russia this week to co-chair a meeting of a key bilateral body that oversees trade and economic relations between the two countries amid continuing strains between New Delhi and Washington over trade-related issues and the Trump administration's strident criticism of energy and defence cooperation between India and Russia. On Wednesday, Jaishankar and Russian deputy prime minister Denis Manturov co-chaired a meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, during which the external affairs minister backed a 'more creative and innovative approach' to tackle challenges posed by a complex geopolitical situation – an apparent reference to the churn caused by the trade and tariff policies of the US administration. Lavrov and Jaishankar are expected to focus on current and prospective areas of bilateral cooperation, with the focus on 'promoting transportation, logistics, banking and financial chains independent from countries imposing sanctions', the Russian embassy said in a statement. Also Read: Jaishankar, Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov to meet in Moscow on Aug 21 They are also expected to discuss 'expanding the use of national currencies in mutual [trade] settlements', the statement said. Following Western sanctions on Russia over the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India and Russia have largely switched over to the use of rupee and ruble for trade settlement. Russian officials said on Wednesday that almost 90% of trade settlements are currently done in national currencies. In a reference to Putin's planned visit for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Russian embassy said Jaishankar and Lavrov will also discuss the schedule of upcoming contacts between the two sides. Russian officials confirmed on Wednesday that Putin will travel to India later in the year, though dates for the trip haven't been finalised. 'The foundation of the Russian-Indian special and privileged strategic partnership is mutual trust and respect,' the Russian embassy said. 'Moscow and New Delhi stand for multipolarity as an integral factor in ensuring the balance of the world order that has emerged over the past decades.' Besides reviewing cooperation in transport, energy, agriculture and scientific and technical matters, the two foreign ministers will discuss global issues and collaboration at the UN, Brics, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and G20. They are also expected to exchange views on the situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan, and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Jaishankar and Manturov also participated in the India-Russia Business Forum on Wednesday night to discuss trade cooperation with heads of business organisations of the two countries. Jaishankar said growing business and deepening cooperation between India and Russia are 'no longer simple propositions' because of changes in the two economies and the 'uncertainties created by the global environment'. 'That India and Russia have nurtured one of the steadiest relationships between major nations in current times is now widely recognised. However, that did not automatically translate into significant economic cooperation,' he said. 'Our trade basket remains limited and till recently, so did our trade volume. It may have grown in recent years, but then, so too has the trade deficit.' The diversification and balancing of trade require more strenuous efforts and are essential to reach higher trade targets, he added. India-Russia trade touched a record of $68.7 billion in 2024-25, though India's exports were worth only $4.88 billion. Russian officials have said Moscow is working to address this trade imbalance by removing trade barriers, pushing alternative logistics corridors and developing payments mechanisms.
