KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Xinhua) -- From her studio tucked away in a quiet corner of Kuala Lumpur, Alice Chang, a Malaysian artist, carefully blends her color palette using various shades of white and blue, which she meticulously uses to form intricate paintings of various objects and animals.
At first glance, one might think these pieces are very similar to traditional Chinese porcelain, and it would be right. Chang, inspired by those artisans of centuries past, specifically the blue-and-white porcelain wares from Jingdezhen -- China's famed porcelain capital during the Ming Dynasty -- created her fifth solo exhibition, "Me, Then Blue," reinterpreting the same style for a modern audience.
"Remember that many of these painters had no formal training, being employed to hand-paint porcelain. Thus, they were not clouded by the thoughts of others and expressed themselves in the purest possible sense. They painted what they felt, what they saw in their everyday lives, each of them in their own unique way," she told Xinhua in a recent exclusive interview.
Ranging from the conventional to impressionist pieces, Chang who sculpts as well as paints, demonstrates through her work the versatility of the style and the colors most often associated with it -- minimalist paintings as well as complex works cover the walls of her studio, which also doubles as an art gallery.
The discovery of the "Wanli Shipwreck" off Malaysia's east coast, with valuable artifacts being found and salvaged alongside large amounts of broken porcelain pieces regarded as having little value, despite the story they told of the region's maritime history, had struck a chord with Chang.
"What truly moved me were the broken porcelain pieces; they shared the same historic value as those that ended up in prestigious auction houses. I wanted to give them a new lease of life, to transform what was once considered worthless into something meaningful and beautiful," she explained.
"Even as fragments, they shared the same history and told the same story as part of the region's maritime history from the Portuguese sailors who were transporting them, the people and traders of pre-independence Malaysia, and the Chinese artisans who created them," she said.
In addition to the paintings, Chang also incorporated porcelain fragments into sculptures that she has created as part of her collection. "There's quiet poetry in working with what's broken. Through art, I hope to honor not just the objects, but the resilience and forgotten stories they represent," she said.
The exhibition features 20 paintings and 11 sculptures, each a meditation on memory and transformation, bridging art, archaeology, and a chapter of Malaysian history long overlooked.
Chang also spoke of the value of art as a bridge between people of different countries and groups, having met and collaborated with people from all over the world as part of her 15-year journey as an artist.
"We have an affinity for one another. There are no boundaries in our shared passion for art, not just in admiring it, but also in creating it. When I travel to Indonesia, I can stay in a fellow artist's home. It's the same anywhere I go. Art really brings people together," she said.

For millions of Chinese teens like Zhao, the end of the gaokao signals more than just academic relief. It ushers in a unique consumer trend known as the 'post-gaokao economy' as students and their families celebrate hard-earned freedom with a surge in spending on travel, electronics, lifestyle upgrades, and self-discovery experiences. This week, gaokao results have begun to roll out across the country, giving graduates even more reason to unwind and enjoy the summer break. Emotional spending spike Across China, industries ranging from tourism and consumer electronics to personal training and medical services have reported a spike in activity in the weeks following the gaokao, which is held in early June every year. According to data from Ctrip, bookings for travel packages departing between June 9 and June 11 rose by 88 per cent compared to the previous week, as many high school graduates chose to begin their trips immediately after the exam. Destinations such as Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Xi'an are attracting large numbers of student travelers, with many scenic spots offering discounted or free admission for this year's high school graduates. Retailers are also experiencing growth, with electronics ranking among the top purchases. Sun Jian, store manager of JD MALL in Chongqing, said that alongside popular items like smartphones, laptops and tablets, sales of learning devices, digital notebooks and wearable gadgets have risen by 40 to 50 per cent compared with the pre-gaokao period. Given the immense importance of the gaokao in Chinese society, both students and parents often turn to travel, shopping, or celebration as a way to find emotional release after years of academic pressure. 'My son enjoys gaming, so we promised him that if he focused on preparing for the exam, he could fully relax and have fun afterward,' said a customer surnamed Zhuang, who was shopping for a laptop at a store in Fujian's Quanzhou City. Zhuang added that he was willing to buy the best he could afford for his son, as it would also be useful for college. Style makeovers soar Beyond just spending, the post-gaokao period provides a glimpse into how today's youth are starting to explore their identities and passions. From solo trips and comic con visits to photography workshops and fitness classes, students are using the time to pursue their personal interests. A community gym in Beijing's Xicheng District has seen a surge in visitors this June. 'We receive numerous inquiry calls daily, and many new members are recent high school graduates,' a gym staff member said. 'They hope to use the summer for structured training to enter university better prepared both physically and mentally.' Zhang Qingxi, a high school graduate from Huangping County in the southwestern province of Guizhou, began driving lessons just days after the gaokao. 'I hope to get my license this summer,' she said. 'Once I have it, I plan to travel with friends and see the places I've only read about in books.' According to Zhang, nearly 100 students who recently took the gaokao attend driving lessons at her training center daily. Many students are also taking greater interest in their appearance and personal style. Wang, a hairdresser from Xi'an, said the number of students coming in for hair dyeing has surged since the gaokao, and to keep up with the demand, the salon has even extended its hours. 'Graduates often choose trendy and unique hairstyles, and some even bring in anime-style designs from comics for inspiration,' said another hair salon employee. According to data from Meituan, orders for vision correction surgery rose by 108 per cent in the first week after the gaokao, while orders for orthodontics and teeth whitening each saw a nearly 30 per cent increase week-on-week. From test takers to decision makers Like most post-gaokao travelers, Zhao planned his trip and handled all the bookings – from train tickets to hotel reservations – largely on his own. 'We don't know much about his plan. He's an adult and it's all up to him now,' said Zhao's father. ''Post-gaokao consumption' is not only a wave of youthful spending, but also an important window into the consumption trends among younger generations,' said Long Shaobo, professor from the School of Public Policy and Administration, Chongqing University. According to Xia Ri, assistant researcher at Anbound, an independent think tank in China, high school graduates often seek novelty, quality and variety in their spending, which are traits typical of young people. Louis Vuitton has unveiled The Louis, a life-size cruise ship-inspired concept store in the heart of Shanghai. Located at the front plaza of HKRI Taikoo Hui on Nanjing West Road, this 30-metre-tall structure spans three levels and 1,600 square metres, blending retail, exhibition, and hospitality spaces under one roof. Paying tribute to the brand's 19th-century legacy of crafting hard-sided travel trunks, The Louis reimagines the spirit of exploration and luxury through architecture. The vessel-like structure not only nods to Shanghai's maritime past but also symbolises Louis Vuitton's evolution from a luggage maker to a cultural institution. 'This ship-shaped decoration echoes Shanghai's urban spirit of 'embracing all rivers and seas',' said Wu Yue, president of LVMH Greater China. Inside, visitors enter through a visually immersive archway called the Trunkscape, featuring monogram canvas trunks set against ever-changing LED nature scenes. The main exhibition, 'Louis Vuitton Extraordinary Journey,' spans two floors and ten thematic rooms that explore the maison's deep connection to maritime culture and its history. Highlights include the Origins room—filled with archival material about the brand's founders—and the Voyage room, which presents whimsical bag designs and customised travel pieces once owned by legendary globetrotters. The exhibition continues with rooms dedicated to Louis Vuitton's perfume and fashion histories, alongside the Books room, which features rare writings and sketches by Gaston-Louis Vuitton. Meanwhile, the Sports room displays purpose-built trophy trunks for events such as Formula 1, FIFA and the Olympics. The journey culminates in the Workshop and Testing areas, where visitors can watch artisans at work, offering a rare look at the craftsmanship behind the brand. The concept was designed in collaboration with architectural firm OMA, led by Shohei Shigematsu, who emphasised the trunk as the core identity of Louis Vuitton and used it as a structural and thematic element throughout the exhibition. The installation reflects Shanghai's maritime spirit as the 'Gateway to the East,' linking the city's port culture with Louis Vuitton's legacy of travel and innovation. On the top floor, Le Café Louis Vuitton offers a curated menu that fuses local Shanghai flavours with Western culinary influences. Led by executive chef Leonardo Zambrino, the bistro-style café features dishes such as monogram-shaped Chinese dumplings, a yuja-dressed Caesar salad, and signature desserts like Peach Charlotte with Jasmine Tea. Louis Vuitton's president of LVMH Greater China, Wu Yue, described The Louis as a celebration of Shanghai's cosmopolitan and innovative spirit. Meanwhile, CEO Pietro Beccari called it a new chapter in the brand's cultural evolution, embodying the 'spirit of travelling' through ideas, emotions, and inspiration in a joyful way.
