At its General Council meeting in Madurai, DMK attacks Centre for denying TN
During the meeting, which was held on a sprawling 90-acre site in Uthangudi, 27 important resolutions were passed. DMK functionaries read out the resolutions one by one. Among them was a resolution condemning the Union Government for denying Tamil Nadu its rightful financial allocations.
The gathering saw the participation of over 10,000 party leaders, including Chief Minister MK Stalin and ministers, MPs, MLAs, and senior functionaries.
The meeting holds political significance as it is the first time in 47 years that event was held in Madurai, solidifying the party's influence in the southern region.
The key resolutions include ensuring the victory of the party in the 2026 Assembly elections and electing MK Stalin as Chief Minister, declaring June 3rd, the birth anniversary of Karunanidhi, as 'Classical Tamil Day,' and expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister for being a pioneer in improving the lives of women in the State. Another resolution emphasised the need to publicise the DMK government's achievements among the people.
Earlier, the DMK had 23 internal wings, and two new wings have now been added, bringing the total to 25. The newly formed wings are the Differently Abled Wing and the Academics Wing.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, in another political development in the state, AIADMK announced that IS Inbadurai and M Dhanapal will be its candidates for the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 19 this year.
'With the approval of AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami, we are announcing candidates for Rajya Sabha. IS Inbadurai, M Dhanapal will contest on behalf of AIADMK,' AIADMK Deputy General Secretary KP Munusamy told reporters.
Munusamy also said that AIADMK will allocate one Rajya Sabha seat to its alliance partner DMDK in 2026 when the vacancy arises.
Earlier this week, the DMK announced its candidates for the election and allocated one seat to Kamal Haasan, the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiyam.
According to a DMK release, Salma, Advocate P Wilson, and SR Sivalingam are its candidates.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, each candidate requires a minimum of 34 votes to clinch a Rajya Sabha seat. The DMK-led INDIA bloc, with 158 MLAs (DMK: 133, Congress:17, VCK: 4, CPI: 2, CPM: 2), is poised to win four seats comfortably. (ANI)

"There Are Political Solutions": Centre Jabs States On Presidential Reference
New Delhi: Not every problem needs to be solved by the Supreme Court, the government said Thursday afternoon, the third day of the presidential reference hearing. Some issues, the government said, should, be worked out between a Chief Minister and the Prime Minister or President. Appearing for the centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that if some governors were, in fact, sitting on bills, then a political solution should be prioritised over a judicial answer. Mr Mehta's response followed a question by the court - 'what options do state governments have if a governor sits on a bill for an extended period?' The Solicitor General said, "Suppose a particular governor is sitting on bills... there are political solutions. And such solutions are taking place, but it is not everywhere. It is not everywhere the state government rushes to the Supreme Court. The Chief Minister goes and requests the Prime Minister... meets the President." "There are delegations that go and say, 'these bills are pending, please talk to the Governor and let him take a decision, one way or the other'. The issue can be sorted out on the telephone." "This does not confer (the courts) jurisdiction to lay down a timeline... In the absence of a timeline in the Constitution, can it be laid down by the court even if there is justification?" The remarks were made as the court advises President Droupadi Murmu over its April verdict, which set the President and Governors a deadline to clear bills passed by state legislatures. In the past non-BJP ruled states - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Punjab - have accused their respective governors, who are appointed by the federal government, of deliberately withholding consent to bills passed by the state legislature or delaying assent by passing it to the President. In April, in a potentially landmark ruling in the context of Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and the state's ruling DMK, the Supreme Court ruled the former's actions "arbitrary" and "illegal". The court said bills returned to and passed by the state legislature for a second time had to be cleared, either by the Governor or the President, within 30 days. That verdict has been challenged by the President under Article 143 of the Constitution, which empowers her to seek the court's opinion on any question of law of public importance. On Tuesday the court emphasised its advisory role. The Chief Justice said the court would not sit in appeal over the Tamil Nadu case and would not overturn, at this time, the April judgement.
