Melaka couple claims trial to neglecting baby boy
ALOR GAJAH: A married couple has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of neglecting their two-month-old son, causing him to be injured.
The accused, both 22, entered the plea after the charges were read out before judge Aiza Khairuddin on Tuesday (May 13).
The housewife and factory operator, as the legal guardians of the child, are accused of exposing him to risk in a manner likely to cause him injuries.

The offence was alleged to have taken place at a house in Taman Seri Pelangi near here between May 2 and 5.
The charge was framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
DPP Muhamad Ali Hussain did not offer bail, citing the seriousness of the offence committed against the child.
He said this was in line with Parliament's intention when it amended Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 in 2016 with increased penalties to reflect the severity of such offences.
Lawyer Mohammed Hissham Ramdzan appealed for low bail for both accused, stating that the mother had just completed her postnatal confinement period, while her husband is a factory operator earning a monthly salary of RM1,800.

The court granted each accused bail of RM10,000 with one surety each and set additional conditions, including reporting monthly to the nearest police station.
Next mention was fixed for June 12.
The alleged child neglect came to light when the mother brought the unconscious infant to Hospital Alor Gajah on the night of May 5, claiming he had suffered a seizure.
The baby was later referred to Hospital Melaka, where a CT scan revealed bruises, cuts on the body and neck, with both old and new instances of internal bleeding in the baby's head.
A police report was subsequently lodged by a specialist doctor from Hospital Melaka.

Nine students remanded over alleged assault case in Chukai
CHUKAI: Nine students from a secondary school here, believed to be involved in an assault case against a male student last month, have been remanded for three days, beginning today. Kemaman District Police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the remand order was issued by Judge Wan Suhaila Mohd to allow investigations under Section 147 of the Penal Code to be conducted. He said that the students, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested at about 1.30 pm yesterday after police received a report from the 14-year-old victim. 'The incident reportedly occurred because one of the suspects was unhappy that the victim was still keeping photos of his ex-girlfriend, who is also the suspect's current girlfriend. 'The victim claimed he was assaulted by several students on May 27 and 28, causing him to suffer injuries to his head and back,' he said when contacted.

Lorry owner fined RM100,000 for possessing unlicensed diesel
IPOH: A local man was fined RM100,000 by the Kuala Kangsar Sessions Court today for possession of unlicensed controlled goods (diesel) under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. The Perak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), in a statement, said that Ong Seow Hooi, 49, owner of a tanker lorry, was accused of committing the offence at Jalan Puncak Bougainvillea, Kuala Kangsar, at 2.45 am on Jan 6, 2024. 'The accused was arrested along with a modified lorry containing 4,432 litres of diesel stored in an intermediate bulk container, which raised reasonable suspicion that he was trading scheduled goods, in this case, diesel, through wholesale or retail transactions without a valid licence. 'The accused pleaded guilty after the charge was read before Judge Rohaida Ishak,' read the statement. Prosecuting officer Mohamed Nizam Mohamed Yunan led the prosecution. Ong, who paid the fine in full, would have faced up to 12 months in prison if he had failed to pay the fine.
