Diamondbacks plan to be sellers at deadline, but extent is still not known: Sources

New York Times24-07-2025
The Arizona Diamondbacks are telling rival clubs they plan to trade at least some of their veterans. But the extent to which the DBacks will sell is not yet clear, according to sources briefed on their plans.
The number of deals the DBacks complete before next Thursday's trade deadline will hinge on a variety of factors. The level of interest in their players. Whether the proposals they receive for their qualifying-offer candidates exceeds the potential draft-pick compensation. The assessment of club officials about the team's ability to compete for the third wild-card spot.

After getting swept at home by the injury-depleted Houston Astros, the Diamondbacks sit 5 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres, the team currently in the third position. Three clubs – the San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals – are ahead of Arizona. But none is especially imposing, and St. Louis is expected to sell.
The Diamondbacks are reluctant to concede, knowing that in 2023 they secured the sixth and final NL seed with 84 wins, then went on a spectacular run to the World Series. But they already are down three pitchers for the start of next season – right-hander Corbin Burnes and relievers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk. Their potential free agents, some of the most attractive players on the market, possibly could bring the young pitching the DBacks intend to seek.
Third baseman Eugenio Suárez, fourth in the majors with 36 homers and first with 86 RBIs, might be the best hitter available. Right-hander Zac Gallen, despite his 5.58 ERA, will be one of the best pitchers. Righty Merrill Kelly and first baseman Josh Naylor also are on expiring contracts. It is unlikely the DBacks would trade both Gallen and Kelly.
The team's other potential free agents include outfielder Randal Grichuk and reliever Shelby Miller, who currently is on the injured list. Neither of those players would be under consideration for one-year qualifying offers in the $22 million range. But Suárez, Gallen, Naylor and Kelly all would.
To move any of the four, general manager Mike Hazen would need to clear the value of the draft pick, which would be between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A as long as the player signed for at least $50 million in free agency.
Kelly, who turns 37 in October, might be the only one of the DBacks' big four who commands a deal of less than $50 million. The pick for him then would be after Competitive Balance Round B, at or around No. 75. With each extra choice, the Diamondbacks' bonus pool also would increase.

The Diamondbacks, according to a source, are scouting the minor-league systems of at least some of the teams interested in Suárez. Those teams, according to sources and published reports, include the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners.
The demand for Suárez makes him the the most likely of the DBacks players to move, with top prospect Jordan Lawlar ready to step in for him at third base. What the Diamondbacks do beyond Suárez will be determined in the week ahead.

Where Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ranks on the 5 fastest pitches hit for HR

When the San Diego Padres gave up two of their top-3 prospects at the deadline in order to acquire flamethrower Mason Miller from the A's, it was a bold move that was informed by history. Basically, it's super difficult to get an extra-base hit off velocity of 102-plus mph, and Miller consistently gets there with his fastball. But no pitcher is invincible no matter how hard he throws. And Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. proved just that on Tuesday night when he tied the game in the eighth inning by crushing Miller's 103.9 mph fastball for a two-run homer. To put that homer into perspective, no home run had been hit this season on a pitch exceeding 102 mph until Tuesday. Among the 15 fastest pitches thrown this season, 13 of them belonged to Miller. And only one homer on a pitch exceeding 103 mph had been previously hit in the Statcast era. But where did Gurriel's homer rank among the fastest pitches hit for a home run in the Statcast era? Let's take a look. 5. Kurt Suzuki - 102.6 mph off Aroldis Chapman on June 18, 2016 4. Rafael Devers - 102.8 mph off Aroldis Chapman on Aug. 13, 2017 3. Josh Bell - 102.9 mph off Aroldis Chapman on Aug. 2, 2024 2. Ian Happ - 103.2 mph off Mason Miller on Sept. 17, 2024 1. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. - 103.9 mph off Mason Miller on Aug. 5, 2025 That's right: Gurriel's home run from Tuesday was off the fastest pitch hit for a homer in the Statcast era (tracking began in 2008). But given that Miller and Chapman have record-breaking velocity, it's almost certain that Gurriel hit the fastest pitch for a home run in any era. Yankee Legends Floated to Replace Aaron Boone; Here's Who Would Really Get Job

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. After a fifth straight Yankees loss on Tuesday, another one in gut-wrenching fashion as closer Devin Williams allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth, if manager Aaron Boone was not on the hot seat before, he is now. At least as far as fans are concerned. Before this season, the Yankees extended Boone's contract through the 2027 season, so he admittedly seems unlikely to be abruptly fired mid-season. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 20: Manager Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees looks on prior to the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on July 20, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 20: Manager Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees looks on prior to the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on July 20, 2025 in Atlanta, the other hand, the team's deep regression after a fast start has not been a one-time occurrence. The same sort of collapse under Boone has happened in each of the previous three seasons as well. As compiled by Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report, here's how the Yankees' recent seasons have gone: 2022: 61-23, then 38-40 2023: 48-38, then 34-42 2024: 49-21, then 45-47 2025: 42-25, now 18-29 In response, Yankee fans have floated the names of two franchise legends to replace Boone, but in all likelihood based on how recent manager firings have gone, neither of their favorites would be in line to get the job. According to an analysis by Pinstripes Nation columnist Esteban Quiñones published Wednesday, one of the two most popular prospective Boone replacements would be former catcher Jorge Posada — the backstop and in many ways, backbone of the Yankees dynasty under manager Joe Torre that won three straight World Series from 1998 to 2000. More MLB: Yankees Could Crash Out of Playoff Race If They Don't Get Act Together: Insider Posada also won a fourth World Series with the Yankees in 2009, when Joe Girardi was managing the iconic club. But the Yankees have not won a World Series since then, and have appeared in only one, last season. However, the 17-year veteran, who spent his whole career in the Bronx, has never managed a big league team. The second hoped-for candidate, according to Quiñones, has 12 years of managing in the majors, five with the Los Angeles Dodgers, followed by seven overseeing the Miami Marlins. In fact, 64-year-old Don Mattingly won National League Manager of the Year with the Marlins, in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Mattingly guided the Dodgers to three straight playoff appearances from 2013 to 2015 after a three-year absence from the postseason. With the Marlins, the only postseason appearance under Mattingly came in the 2020 season. As a player, Mattingly's .830 lifetime OPS with 222 home runs in 14 seasons — all with New York — and .307 career batting average make him certainly the most accomplished Yankee player who spent his whole career in the Bronx but never won a World Series — or even to play in one. More MLB: Aaron Boone 'Losing Grip' as Yankees Melt Down in Toronto; 'Close to Dead Day' Mattingly never even played in the postseason until the final year of his career, 1995, when the Yankees lost the American League Division Series to the Seattle Mariners. He currently serves as bench coach of the Toronto Blue Jays. In reality, in the hypothetical event of Boone's midseason dismissal, neither of those Yankee greats are likely to be hired. Instead, based on multiple precedents, the most likely candidate would be Boone's own bench coach, former Detroit Tiger Brad Ausmus. Bench coaches tend to be the most common replacements for fired managers. Blue Jays manager Jon Schneider was elevated from bench coach in 2022 when Charlie Montoyo got the axe. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson was bench coach when he replaced fired manager Girardi in 2022 as well. This year, when the Pittsburgh Pirates canned manager Derek Shelton, they promoted bench coach Don Kelly to take his seat. And those are just a few examples of the trend. Ausmus had an 18-year playing career with four different teams, winning four Gold Gloves and being named an All-Star in 1999. He also has managerial experience, helming the Detroit Tigers from 2014 to 2017, including a 90-win season and playoff appearance in his rookie year. Ausmus, 56, also managed the Los Angeles Angels in 2019. More MLB: Aaron Boone's 'Laissez-Faire Attitude' Ripped After Yankees' Humiliating Sweep
