US, UK upgrade Egypt travel advisories in recognition of stability - Tourism

Al-Ahram Weekly5 days ago
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf welcomed on Friday the recent decisions by the United States and the United Kingdom to upgrade their travel advisories for Egypt to Level Two.
In a statement, Khallaf noted that Egypt has been placed under the US State Department's Level Two: Exercise Increased Caution category, alongside countries such as France and Germany, describing the move as a "notable positive step."
He also highlighted the updated UK travel advisory, which emphasized that nearly one million British citizens visit Egypt annually—a reflection, he said, of the country's stable and secure environment.
Khallaf stressed that these updates are the result of extensive diplomatic efforts by Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its embassies abroad to improve Egypt's international standing.
Before the change, the US travel advisory had placed Egypt at Level Three: Reconsider Travel, urging Americans to avoid visiting due to safety concerns. The UK also maintained more restrictive guidance for certain areas, especially outside of major tourist zones.
The revised travel guidance is expected to boost tourism flows and support Egypt's economy, strengthening its position as a leading global destination for historical and cultural tourism.
Tourism remains a key source of foreign currency for Egypt. The government has launched a national strategy to develop the sector and attract 30 million visitors by 2028.
In 2024, Egypt welcomed 15.7 million tourists, generating $14.1 billion in revenue, surpassing the previous record of 14.9 million tourists in 2023.

US Approves $322 Mln Arms Sale to Ukraine

Israa Farhan The United States has approved a major $322 million arms deal with Ukraine aimed at strengthening the country's air defense systems and armored vehicle fleet, amid ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, following a temporary pause in weapons deliveries to Kyiv earlier in July. The move signals renewed American commitment to Ukraine's military support as the war with Russia intensifies. The two-part package includes $172 million worth of equipment and maintenance for the HAWK air defense systems, as well as a $150 million deal for Bradley armored fighting vehicles and their maintenance. According to the agency, the HAWK-related deal will enhance Ukraine's capacity to defend against both current and future aerial threats by boosting its self-defense and regional security capabilities through stronger air defenses. In addition, the Bradley vehicle deal will address Ukraine's urgent need to maintain high operational readiness of US-supplied combat vehicles and weapon systems. It also aims to improve local maintenance capabilities to ensure consistent battlefield performance. The US State Department has formally approved the deal, and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency has submitted the required documentation to Congress for final authorization. This latest military package follows a similar agreement in early May worth approximately $311 million, which focused on providing training and spare parts for Ukraine's fleet of F-16 fighter jets. The Biden administration continues to balance domestic and international pressures while navigating legislative hurdles to maintain a steady flow of military aid to Ukraine. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Liverpool sign Ekitiké from Frankfurt and take offseason spending to $342 million - World

Liverpool signed France forward Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday to continue the Premier League champion's offseason spending spree. Ekitiké is Liverpool's latest big-money signing after Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez — taking its outlay to around $342 million. The 23-year-old Ekitiké has joined for a fee of 69 million pounds ($93.5 million) and signed a six-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because details have not been made public, said the fee could rise by a further 10 million pounds ($13.5 million). We have reached an agreement for the transfer of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, subject to international clearance 😎 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 23, 2025 Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been busy strengthening a team that won its record-equaling 20th English league title last season — in particular in attack. Wirtz, signed from Bayer Leverkusen last month for a fee that could rise to a British record 116 million pounds ($156 million), is considered one of the brightest talents in Europe. And Etikité is another player who has shone in Germany after leaving Paris Saint-Germain last year. He scored 22 in 48 appearances in his one full season with Frankfurt, which has made a big profit on him after buying him for a reported $19 million last year. Ekitiké's move comes weeks after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain. There is uncertainty about the future of other Liverpool forwards Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, who have both been targeted by teams in Europe during the offseason. The Merseyside club has not retained a league title since winning three in a row between 1982 and '84, which was before the inception of the Premier League. It is likely to face challenges from Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, who have all been active in the transfer market since the end of the season. Ekitiké is the latest big-money departure from Frankfurt after forward Omar Marmoush joined Man City for a reported $73 million in January. Marmoush was the team's top-scorer at the time, but Ekitiké responded with his best performances in a Frankfurt shirt to help the team finish third in the Bundesliga for Champions League qualification.
