Poland Keen To Deepen Defence Ties With Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- Citing Malaysia's longstanding use of Polish-made military systems, Polish President Andrzej Duda has expressed strong interest in expanding defence cooperation between the two countries.
He said the Malaysian Armed Forces have for years been operating Polish-made tanks and integrated command and communication systems, particularly those produced by defence firm WB Electronics.
'Poland is continuing to invest in modernising its defence industry,' the visiting president said at a joint press conference with Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on Tuesday, as he highlighted the potential for broader bilateral collaboration in defence.
One of the country's latest products, he said, is the Borsuk infantry fighting vehicle, which he hopes will become a key export product.
Duda urged Malaysia to explore more opportunities in Poland's defence sector and invited its leaders to the International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce, one of Europe's top military trade fairs.
'There, they will be able to see the full scope of Poland's defence offerings. All major arms producers participate, and our portfolio is expanding,' he said.
Duda, who assumed office in August 2015, is making his inaugural three-day visit to Malaysia, which coincides with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship and Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025.
In 2024, Poland was Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.66 billion compared to 2023.
Malaysia's major exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products, and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products, and transport equipment.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragic accident involving Air India, it said in its X platform. "Our hearts are with the passengers, crew and their loved ones during this tragic time. We stand with Air India and all who have been impacted by this tragedy,' it said. Batik Air Malaysia also shared its deepest condolences to the people affected by the crash. "Our deepest condolences and hearts go out to everyone affected by the Air India incident. ‘He applied, I approved': Anwar says of RM486,000 Japan trip bill for Dr Mahathir
MELAKA, June 13 — The government bears almost half a million ringgit in cost for former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's trip to Japan to attend the annual Nikkei conference last month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said the government allocated approximately RM486,000 for the visit after receiving a formal application from Tun Dr Mahathir. 'There are existing provisions for former prime ministers to apply (for government support for official travel)...and if the sitting prime minister approves, the government will bear the cost, including for Tun Mahathir, who recently requested to attend the Nikkei conference in Japan. He applied, and I approved. I believe the delegation was around seven people. 'I have people asking me why pay for him. He is entitled to apply, but the decision rests with the sitting prime I decided to approve that RM486,000 for him to go to Japan. 'I just don't want anyone to misunderstand...I just don't want to take a negative attitude. Despite his daily criticisms of the government, we still approved his (travel) application,' Anwar told reporters here yesterday. On May 30, Tun Dr Mahathir was reported to have attended and delivered a speech at the annual Nikkei Future of Asia conference, a platform he has regularly attended over the years. On separate development, Anwar said he is giving time to two Cabinet ministers who recently submitted resignation letters, encouraging them to reconsider their decisions. The Prime Minister said he received the letters from the two ministers applying for leave and resignation, but he had only approved the leave for now. '...Let them think about it. Personally, I would prefer that they rejoin the Cabinet,' he said.
